I grew up in Haddonfield and return twice a year for the past 16 years and never visited the Indian King Tavern Museum. Finally that changed a couple weeks ago and I discovered the building and the tour guide offer a plethora of interesting facts and stories about the town and the tavern's history.
For example, we all know Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, but did you know that it was Timothy Matlack, a man from Haddonfield, who was chosen to inscribe the historic document that now rests on display in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.? It was also at this location in which New Jersey officially became a state in all written documents (as opposed to it being referred to as a colony) and the Great Seal of the State of New Jersey was adopted.
Take the tour by the host and you will learn many other fascinating facts about Haddonfield, New Jersey, and America during the time of the Revolution and beyond. read more
