And I definitely prefer St. Anthony's. 1. There are nightly concerts of classic and Italian music in the church. This year the Fralinger String Band played just outside the Antonion on the first Sunday. They were pretty fantastic as well. 2. Come early in the evening (I'm talking 5:30 when they open!) for the people watching-- you get little old couples dancing and listening to the music, versus 9:30 when you have tattoos and wifebeaters making drunk passes at hooker heels and push up bras. 3. It's a carnival-- of course they have the requisite funnel cake and hot dogs. Stay away from the stretch across from the midway if you want authentic. The Antonian has my personal favorite food (must get a porkette sandwich!), but go to the cage (The Piazza) as a second choice, and Nona Strada as a last resort (everyone seems to line up for the pizza there). I think the nice thing about the Italian fest is there's something for everyone. At Greek fest, food is only done by church volunteers, and the lines stretch on FOREVER, but at St. Anthony's you have restaurants vending as well. Some people are happy with their "baked ziti" and panzarotti. 4. Charging to enter was one of the greatest decisions they made. It keeps the riff raff out. At least there are multiple entrances, so lines never get too backed up. If you truly want the authentic St. Anthony's experience, go on the final Sunday. Take part in the 12:00 mass (remember, this is a CHURCH), watch the procession and give dollars to the saints to get bread, or prayer cards, or flowers, and then head into the festival for some food, music, and lemon ice with vodka.

The Brandywine Festival of the Arts is a must for art lovers of all kinds. All over the park…read morevendors are stretched out in tented rows offering jewelry, paintings, carvings, you name it. All of the vendors I've encountered we're welcoming and eager to discuss their craft. One vendor I really enjoyed talking with was David Souza. His wood turnings, a medium I passionately adore, were utterly beautiful. There are some bowls there that I would love to have. For now I scooped up the cutest spinning top that was among an array displayed in all sorts of colors and patterns. The $5.00 admission is good for both days and entry to the zoo. So if you go home and decide you simply can't live without that exquisite hand turned wood bowl with lid well you can go back and get it (note to self). There is a food court were all the food trucks are set up and a large tented seating area or you could sit down by the creek and enjoy the view. The festival also has live music and a kids activity corner. The festival is dog friendly and vendors set out bowls of water in case Fido gets thirsty. Also noteworthy is the fact that they have shuttle buses. I just found this out after coming here three years. As a matter of fact people were boarding one as I was leaving. I don't know why I didn't inquire because there is quite a steep and long hill you MUST travel down to get to the grounds. By the time I scaled the hill back to my car I was a hot, exhausted, sweaty mess but overall an excellent experience.

Saengerbund Oktoberfest is an annual festival that celebrates German-American heritage with food,…read moremusic, beer, amusements and shopping. It occurs the third weekend of September normally. Although it is nothing like Oktoberfests in Germany, it is about as close as you'll get without boarding a plane and using your passport. We went and had a great time last Fall. It was an easy trip from the Philadelphia area and offered much more than the weak Octoberfests that seem to pop up and disappear forever in the Philly area. The highlights were the food and music under the big tent! The beer was good, but the offerings were a tad disappointing. None of the beers that make German beers the envy of others. Like at any festival, the prices are on the high side. Everything is paid for using tickets that can be purchased at booths throughout the venue. The plum cake is awesome! Sweet yet a bit sour-not overly sugary or heavy. The other desserts are also very good. I was excited about the roast pork-but found it a bit bland and greasy. The sausages and sides were all a little disappointing-they could and should be improved. In general, buffet-quality food, at festival prices. The music was good, and as would be expected, hyper-traditional German "muzik." The dancers clearly do what they do out of pride and love-definitely a mom and dad dance club vibe to their performances. But that makes it even more charming and far better than an Epcot Center-Disney-Gone-Wild über-version of traditional german dances. Saengerbund Oktoberfest also has a carnival-like midway with rides (included in the price of admission). Certainly a plus for the kids-should you bring any. Also there is a good selection of "German" souvenir kitsch at über-prices so you can take home a reminder of the day or as a shout-out to your german heritage. One big downside (at least for me) is the "let's go drink beer until we puke" element that seems to become more prevalent as the day turns into night. Another downside is the porta-potty situation. Too few pottys, too many people waiting in long lines, and too many drunken 20-somethings "sneaking" into the bushes to release über-amounts of kidney-processed beer.

My friends happen to live just around the corner, and it was lovely for us to pop by, shop, grab some appetizers and salads, listen to some music, and then walk back to their house and enjoy the goods in the peace and quiet of their backyard. Some of the stuff for sale as crafts weren't exactly Greek (when was the last time a herd of elephants and camels hung out in Athens?) but they were fun ethnic souvenirs. Opa!

Winner of the eating contest won a $300 prize, bragging rights and a trophy. Parking in peripheral lots was more affordable than in-town parking ($5 as opposed to $20). If you like shopping for stuff and home improvement booths, go and enjoy!

Flimsy cardboard "cans" were too few, too far apart and did not work in the rain, leading to fair goers piling their leftover soup, drinks, etc on top of the traditional cans. Within an hour there were towers of garbage falling onto the street, vendor's displays, and ended up being tracked into stores. Not a good look for Kennett Square! Here's hoping the planners learn from their experience.

The St. Charles carnival returns for one week, usually around the middle of June, each year. With…read morehourly 50/50s, one last mega 50/50, and plenty of games, there are a lot of ways to win and have fun while supporting your local church. The beer garden, which cards at the entrance, also has cold beer for $4 or $5 including Miller Lite, Yuengling, and an IPA. The rides are always fun, with large and small Ferris wheels, the Pharoh's fury (swinging ship), the Gravitron, swings, a giant slide, the Merry-Go-Round, etc. In recent years, they've replaced all of the upside down rides that used to be there, such as the Zipper and Spin Out (much to my disappointment). Lines are much better on weekdays, and tickets are half price if you buy them during the pre-sale. There's plenty of food to eat, such as panzarottis (giant pizza rolls), burgers, dogs, fries, pizza, etc. There's an Italian night and a Polish night too, where foods from these countries are featured. There's so much to do, and if nothing else, it's always fun to people watch here too!
