View of downtown Anchorage from the west end of the Park Strip

I came down here today to have lunch and enjoy the sunny weather outside. The Delaney Park Strip is a long expanse of grass, trees, playgrounds, an ice rink during winter, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Before Merrill Field was constructed, this was the original landing strip for seaplanes flying in from other areas or towns in the state decades ago. The park borders the entire southern edge of downtown and this is one of my favorite places to go to in the summer time for lunch or lying down in the shade of a tree reading a book or enjoying the sunshine . The surrounding residential areas on the west end provide a quiet retreat away from the noise of the central downtown area and I enjoy studying here on this side of the park strip when it's too nice outside to sit in a coffee shop for the afternoon. There are picnic tables and benches laid out and provide a fantastic panoramic view of downtown Anchorage. For anyone visiting Anchorage, this is a great spot to catch the annual events that are held here during the summer months. The 4th of July celebration has a parade, live music, food booths, arts and crafts, and games as well as a great view of the fireworks display at night. The Taste is another event here where numerous locally-owned restaurants come together and set up tents and booths for sampling all sorts of food along with a beer garden and live music. Other events of note here are weekly obedience training for dogs on the west end, a massive gathering of people doing yoga or fitness exercises twice a week off of 9th and I St., an annual celebration of the history of Anchorage's formation as a town similar to the Taste event, and various cultural events with stage performances, games for the family, and regional cuisine. This is the ideal place for family picnics or BBQs with the wide open space the park provides especially for frisbee, kite-flying, walking the dogs or playing softball. This is also a good location for a UYE with the amount of local festivals and activities constantly being held here and a great way to meet some of the reviewers in person. If Andrew needs ideas for a UYE, this is definitely one of them.

If you like quirky parks with loud jets flying over, this is the perfect place! I stumbled upon it…read morewhile exploring around Anchorage, and it was such a fun spot to spend some time on a beautiful sunny day. There's a large parking lot, complete with a couple of outhouses and (at least on the day I visited) a hot dog vendor, too. The parking lot sits well above the beach area, where I walked around and did plenty of people-watching before heading out to the point and the very colorfully painted structure that (maybe?) I think has something to do either with airplane or sea navigation. Surrounding the point were zillions of painted rocks. It was local art gone wild and I loved it! At regular intervals, giant jets flew over upon takeoff from the airport (which is mere yards away). If you don't like loud jets, I would not recommend this beach. But if you do, well, you've come to the right place!

A dead moose carcass…read more Graffiti, mostly colorful. Didn't close enough to see if it was also tasteful. Slippery clay and mud - lots of moments where I thought I might slip and fall to the ground. Definitely something to watch for. Small granulated particles sliding down the sandy hill. Crazy to see erosion in action. Just a few of the many exciting things along this walking area. Beautiful breeze off the inlet. Lots of great views of downtown Anchorage. Lots of parking available and a wonderful place to get to see a brilliant sunset. Bring a chair and a cooler!
