It's always a good day with Victor's on your plate!…read more I stopped by recently with a lifelong friend and his wife while they were in town. His wife is not from Bakersfield, and seeks out Victor's every time they visit. She asked me how I don't eat at Victor's for every meal. With food this delicoius and this reasonably priced, it's truly a valid question. I tend to get the shrimp burrito, but I recommend anything on their menu. Victor's has earned their right as a local household name and favorite over the years. The folks behind the counter are always friendly and helpful. The restaurant is always clean and well taken care of.

I've given Victor's Mexican Grill multiple chances, but my recent experience was enough to make me…read morestop coming back. The biggest issue is the constant upcharges. It seems like everything costs extra--shrimp, queso, onions, and more. Normally I wouldn't mind paying extra if the portions matched the price, but they don't. I paid for onions and was given a tiny portion. When I politely asked for a little more, I was told I would have to pay again. That felt ridiculous. She actually said "Welcome to the real world nothing is free" after giving me the smaller onion when they had plenty of extra. On top of that, the customer service was disappointing. Instead of feeling appreciated as a paying customer, I felt like I was being treated as an inconvenience. The attitude from staff came across as rude and dismissive, which made the situation even more frustrating. My friend payed for his food with Apple Cash and the system took the money then the employee told me it hadn't gone through. When the money on my friend's end was gone. This being the systems fault we were told they couldn't do anything about it leading to us paying once again for the over priced meal. Prices continue to go up, portions seem to get smaller, and customer service has gone downhill. I don't mind paying for quality food, but I do expect fair portions and respectful treatment. Unfortunately, that's not what I experienced here.

We were craving something that felt a bit healthier but still flavorful and filling. We both ordered bowls. Mine had rice, double chicken, nopales, grilled onions, and pico de gallo. It was so fresh and satisfying with the perfect amount of flavor. My friend built a bowl with Mexican rice, steak, black beans, lettuce, grilled onions, avocado, and sour cream and I have to admit, I tried a bite and it was just as tasty! Another thing I loved was how fast everything the service was. Even during the lunch rush, the staff was super efficient. The ambience was casual and fast paced, so it makes it the perfect stop for a quick, delicious, and satisfying lunch.

It started to seem like it was "hit and miss" and by that I mean that it all depends on whom you are TRYING to interact and COMMUNICATE with behind the glass...the line crew. Most of them, NOT ALL, seem to have a gigantic CHIP on their shoulder about the size of the Grand Canyon, if not bigger. Or wait, is it because listening has become a lost art? That's a pretty loud statement, but honestly, when you ask for "veggies" and you get whatever they give you, that signals volumes that they (the line crew) do not want to listen. If so, why is that...when it is the customer that is paying their salaries so they can have a job? Does that really make any sense at all? These 20ish or so individuals also seem to not want to work by not acknowledging their customers...Hey, maybe they should find another job or just not work at all and submerse themselves in their cell phones that don't require human interaction whatsoever? Maybe that's it! Has this newer 'generation' even had to deal with the realities of life or acknowledge another human being that has white or gray hair that is not chemically treated? Guess they think they'll never get old. My dear departed mother always used to say "If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing it right!" And, of course, Momma is ALWAYS right. So, in summary, SADLY, the Mt. Vernon location has been "hit and miss" recently. Go there if you don't mind getting what they want to give you. It should not be difficult to get what you ask for - but it seems to be - because of their "NON-VERBAL" messages. Quite hypocritical, wouldn't you say??? Dang it! Used to LOVE this place!

Arriving around 4:30 PM was the perfect move, the restaurant wasn't crowded at all, and we were seated right away. Our server was incredibly nice and attentive, and in a cool twist, my boyfriend realized it was the exact same server he remembered from his high school days coming here after soccer practice. The Warm-Up: We kicked things off with some classic chips and salsa. The chips were serving perfection, soooo warm and seasoned with just the right amount of salt to keep you reaching for more. The Main Event: For my entree, I ordered the shrimp enchiladas, which came paired with traditional rice and beans. My boyfriend stuck to his classic and ordered the chicken burrito he has been getting for years. The Flavor Profile: My enchiladas were incredible; the green sauce was creamy, heavenly, and tied the whole plate together. The meal definitely hit the spot. As for the boyfriend's burrito? He confirmed it was exactly how he remembered it. Needless to say, we absolutely smashed the food. The Verdict: This place completely lived up to the years of hype. Between the fast service, the nostalgic hospitality, and the excellent food, it's the ultimate spot for a comforting meal.

It is like a bit of old Mexico and we love it. Parking is super easy and the prices are very fair. Now, it can get crowded and I think they take reservations, but call them to make sure. Everyone is so nice and they are fast. You will get help with the menu if you need it. We love all their food. Their rice and beans are exceptional. And they have a Happy Hour shrimp with fries that is great. I am not sure of the times. We have not done that in a while. Try their pork belly tacos. You can't get those everywhere and they are just amazing.

I love hot dogs but I was a little disappointed with the sausage. I guess my expectations were too high. The Chipotle Chimis were okay, not as crispy as you'd expect, more like soggy. I just tasted the beans, no chorizo. The Buffalo Fries were too salty for me. On the other hand, the bar drinks were actually good! The staff is very nice. I have formed a bond with Maria who gives me a radiant smile when she sees me. I always order three vegetables tacos to go and two California burritos (also known as San Diego-style burritos) for my spouse and teen. The food is fresh and delicious. The staff does not skimp on the portion sizes. There are sufficient tables and chairs and everything looks tidy. The location is easy to bypass (in or behind a gas station and car wash) and very unassuming. But to me, a foodie who digs dives and hole-in-the-walls for the authentic connection, this place is oro.

I couldn't really taste the difference between the Paloma and the margarita ‍. The place is decorated really nice but what they should've focused on was making agood food. Shrimp skewers I was told was okay but even that had more veggies than actual shrimps. The rice wasn't cooked all the way. The presentation on nachos was excellent but the nachos were gross. No flavor in guacamole. Beans were plain beans bland af. The chicken wasn't seasoned and had an awful charbroiled taste, just awful! The salsa weren't spicy or tasty. I can only recommend this place for a good happy hour spot because prices are outrageous for drinks. Once again they should've focused on the food than the decor.
