Victor's Mexican Grill - Steak bowl and nachos

We were craving something that felt a bit healthier but still flavorful and filling. We both ordered bowls. Mine had rice, double chicken, nopales, grilled onions, and pico de gallo. It was so fresh and satisfying with the perfect amount of flavor. My friend built a bowl with Mexican rice, steak, black beans, lettuce, grilled onions, avocado, and sour cream and I have to admit, I tried a bite and it was just as tasty! Another thing I loved was how fast everything the service was. Even during the lunch rush, the staff was super efficient. The ambience was casual and fast paced, so it makes it the perfect stop for a quick, delicious, and satisfying lunch.

When we first started going to VMG, it was absolutely amazing. Totally! We kept going back, and…read morethe last few times - well, let's say it was less than amazing. Wonder why? It started to seem like it was "hit and miss" and by that I mean that it all depends on whom you are TRYING to interact and COMMUNICATE with behind the glass...the line crew. Most of them, NOT ALL, seem to have a gigantic CHIP on their shoulder about the size of the Grand Canyon, if not bigger. Or wait, is it because listening has become a lost art? That's a pretty loud statement, but honestly, when you ask for "veggies" and you get whatever they give you, that signals volumes that they (the line crew) do not want to listen. If so, why is that...when it is the customer that is paying their salaries so they can have a job? Does that really make any sense at all? These 20ish or so individuals also seem to not want to work by not acknowledging their customers...Hey, maybe they should find another job or just not work at all and submerse themselves in their cell phones that don't require human interaction whatsoever? Maybe that's it! Has this newer 'generation' even had to deal with the realities of life or acknowledge another human being that has white or gray hair that is not chemically treated? Guess they think they'll never get old. My dear departed mother always used to say "If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing it right!" And, of course, Momma is ALWAYS right. So, in summary, SADLY, the Mt. Vernon location has been "hit and miss" recently. Go there if you don't mind getting what they want to give you. It should not be difficult to get what you ask for - but it seems to be - because of their "NON-VERBAL" messages. Quite hypocritical, wouldn't you say??? Dang it! Used to LOVE this place!

That said, I'm a pretty vocal person, and when I saw the portion size that came out, I spoke up. I let our server know that the portion felt a bit small for what we expected. She handled it very well--she was calm, respectful, and apologized, which I appreciated because it clearly wasn't her fault. Alejandro, the owner, came out to speak with us, and I have to say, he's a genuinely great guy. He was open to hearing feedback (what I'd call constructive criticism) and took the time to explain their approach. He mentioned that their portions may appear smaller because the food--especially the rice--is more compact, and that their beans aren't watered down like at some other places. I can respect that explanation, but I do have to disagree. At most restaurants, we usually leave with leftovers. In this case, I found myself still eating off my girlfriend's plate, and we didn't have anything to take home. That said, I really respect that he came out personally to talk with us. That level of customer service goes a long way. To be fair, their buffet is unlimited, and that's something I highly recommend. Every time we've come before, we've done the buffet, and this was our first time ordering a regular dinner. Honestly, the portion size surprised me compared to what we're used to. I did make sure to tell Alejandro that their food is better than most restaurants in the Bakersfield area--it's truly top tier. We'll definitely be coming back, but most likely for the buffet, where portion size isn't an issue since it's all-you-can-eat. I also want to highlight the customer service. That's something many restaurants struggle with, but they got it right here. Our server was respectful and handled the situation professionally, and Alejandro didn't have to come out and address it personally--but he did. That kind of effort makes a difference. If you're planning to visit, I'd recommend coming during brunch for the buffet experience. The food is excellent. I do think increasing the dinner portion sizes would make the experience even better. Thank you again to Alejandro and the staff for being respectful, attentive, and willing to listen. We'll definitely be back--especially for brunch.

The friendly staff & ambiance with good music make up for the food & slow service. Tried the 5 bites for $20, which was a lot of food for only $20. Selected Items: Nachitos (red), Mojo Bread, Buffalo Fries, Chipotle Chimis, & Happy Dog. My favorite item was the Nachitos, which had good flavor and a lot of meat. I love hot dogs but I was a little disappointed with the sausage. I guess my expectations were too high. The Chipotle Chimis were okay, not as crispy as you'd expect, more like soggy. I just tasted the beans, no chorizo. The Buffalo Fries were too salty for me. On the other hand, the bar drinks were actually good! Tried California Love and Paraiso Mojito, they were sweet and did not taste too strong of alcohol. Food: 7/10 Service: 7/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Overall: 7/10
