My wife and I are all about doing things ourselves, but we were having trouble locating a good…read morespecialty lumber spot in town as we are new to this area. We were interested in finding a good solid piece of lumber that would make for sturdy shelving in our kitchen. We walked inside, first thing I saw was a gorgeous large wood table which looked like it was carved out of the biggest tree in Northern Minnesota, which was all sanded but waiting to be stained. There was a gentlemen behind the check out counter and after describing to him what we were looking for, he took us around back to a warehouse full of all kinds of wood, as you would expect. What I didn't expect was the awe of seeing massive timber, the smell, and the selection; it was impressive. After some searching, we found a nice piece of cherry and cedar that fit our needs. He sanded and cut it to the length we needed and helped us load. This place was highly recommended to us from a few other local businesses, and from my understanding, this place has been here forever, and for good reason. After some friendly chatter and joking, we went on our way. As for price, we felt that it was much cheaper for better quality wood than what we were used to paying where we used to live. So, for all projects, large or small, check them out!

"What did he look like?"…read more I have NEVER had such a knuckle-dragging, backwoods, banjo-music serenade experience as I had when trying to order a replacement window at H&H Lumber. A week ago, I dropped off all the specs necessary to order a replacement pane for a Marvin Window at H&H. The guy photocopied my sheet of paper with all the info and told me I could expect a call the following week with an estimate. Over a week passed with no call, so I called them this afternoon and asked if they could tell me whether they had the estimate, yet. I heard "uuuuuuuuhhhh, can ya tell me what the guy looked like?" I'm sorry, what? As an adult with years of experience building and remodeling my own home, I'd never been asked that as a follow-up question. I thought perhaps whoever photocopied the info and promised to call me may have, i dunno, nailed it to the wall next to his desk? Taped it to his shirt so his helper could read it back to him and write it down? When I explained more about the order, and what else was included, I was told "Well, that doesn't really help us if we don't know where it is or who you talked to." I did not know I was supposed to remember him through my own facial recognition software in the event I expected them to follow through... Please. Save yourself a trip back on the evolutionary scale of humanity. Hermantown Lumber carries Marvin Windows. Not only did they agree to help me replace my window, they're going to send someone here to get the numbers off the side of the pane FOR ME. That's called customer service, folks. Oh, and by the way, the number at Hermantown Lumber is (218) 729-8600. It's my impression that they can not only count, but will follow through with their word.
