We had a blast at the Deer Ranch. It's a great rainy/overcast day activity. Admission to see the deer was $6/person and I think that's a steal. You can buy treats to feed the deer (grain, apples, or carrots) for $1/cup. Also a steal. The deer are highly socialized and friendly. Even the bucks will approach you which is great to see their growing racks. The staff are great conservationists and deeply care about the deer. We got to bottle feed the fawns which they do 3x/day. There are some comments about why the fawns are kept separate. If you ask the staff, they will say it's because it's necessary to socialize the fawns early in life.

Overall, I'm glad we stopped. It was a great way to see the deer up close and even feed them! The babies were tiny and sweet. You need to purchase food at the front counter. The employees were friendly. You could easily give away all the food in the front sections as the deer there quickly approached the fence. Save some for the back, though. The bucks may approach too. They were more skittish, though. We had to really look for them in the tall brush. We didn't like how the young deer were separated from the rest and the habitat looked scarce. It also looked like most of them could use more entertaining areas.

Decent roadside attraction. There are several areas to see the deer. It is inexpensive and there are carrot sticks and apples you can buy to feed the deer. There were a couple of fawns in the fawn barn and they were adorable! There are several albino deer among the regular whitetail deer. Some will coMe up to the fence so you can feed them. Good for a short stop.

Getting to feed the deer was a really neat experience! It was fun for the kids being able to feed the deer and then trying to spot the ones in the forest and working to get their attention. There is a little gift shop where you pay for admission and food to feed the deer if you'd like. We got carrots and corn. It was a great experience overall. My only complaint would be about the middle aged woman who seemed to have taken over for the older woman working the register. My 10 year old wanted to purchase something with his own money and as it took a bit for him/us to count the bills and coins (with a hard-to-get-into small coin pouch), she seemed annoyed. After the sale, I said, "thank you", she said nothing back and went to help the next customer. Not customer friendly and I didn't feel like she appreciated our business. Aside from the encounter at the end of our visit, I'd recommend visiting The Deer Ranch.

Very friendly staff ! Only $1 a cup to feed the deer along the trails as well . If driving down us-2 or around mackinaw bridge I would recommend stopping in to the deer ranch .

Enjoyed our visit to the deer ranch, their habitats seemed nice and wooded and the deer seemed calm and enjoyed being fed. Not sure the story as to why they were there but it was cool to see them up close and feed them. Liked it better than the bear place is Oswald.

My wife and I looked forward to this stop on our honeymoon up north. Inside we were excited to be greeted by a cute little fawn in the Fawn Barn. These deer were very friendly and definitely receive more than fair treatment. Was happy to support a small business that has been in operation for 70 years! They must know a thing or two about this! The gift shop was filled with cute little gifts and beautiful ornaments. We both had a very memorable time being deer lovers. Felt out of this world to get to be up close to such beautiful, friendly animals. Will be back again, possibly with our future children!

Excellent experience! We grew up in areas with deer so seeing them isn't really rare for us but seeing them up close, petting them and feeding them is extraordinary! The ranch is thoughtfully run, picturesque and fairly priced. I CANNOT RECOMMEND a VISIT to the DEER RANCH ENOUGH!

Yes, go here. It doesn't matter if you have kids. My toddler loved it but so did her father and I! Admission is cheap and you can spend as much time as you want wondering around. We bought carrots for $1 to feed the older deer. We didn't need to do that b/c they weren't interested so we dumped them close to a few of them before leaving so they could nosh @ their leisure. The staff inside tells you to NOT feed the babies & there is a sign posted in their habitat BUT there were several derelicts that were still doing it . Don't be an idiot. There are reasons they aren't to be fed.

Doesn't look like much from the outside but we decided to give it a try and I am so glad we did. The grounds inside are beautifully maintained. It was gorgeous and the kiddos had a wonderful time feeding all the deer!!

    Another hungry deer munching snack

We stumbled in here on my birthday and it was so magic! We got to watch the babies being fed AND all the animals are incredibly nice!! Would definitely suggest a stop

Absolutely love this ranch!! Such a wonderful experience with these adorable and sweet deer close up! Also the owners were so kind and polite to communicate with! We lucked out and got to feed the fawns because they weren't bottle feeding anymore. But usually you cannot feed the fawns. I also got two of the bucks to walk over to me and eat some of the corn/nuts they gave. The fawns didn't like the corn/nuts but loved the carrots and apples. Highly recommend. Great establishment!!!

My husband, two kids, and myself really enjoyed this place! It was well maintained and the deer look very well taken care of! My kids were especially fond of the fawns and the three albino deer. There's a nice gift shop inside as well. This is not like a normal "zoo", you can tell the people that run the ranch genuinely care about the animals.

If you or your kids like feeding animals, you will have a great time. Go early and when it's not too hot so the deer will be hungry.

Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry June 2026…read more With friends from Albion and Grand Rapids, the four of us were heading from Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island earlier this summer. Parking was smooth - we would be on the island for three days and could leave the SUV in an adjacent parking lot. Short line to the ticket booth, and seamless booking for our ferry, which would leave in about an hour. Time enough for us to cross the parking lot (standard overnight parking - $25 per night; premium dock lot parking - $50/75 per night) and have a light lunch of fries and onion rings at The Dixie Saloon, accompanied by a Kentucky Mule. The ferry was very well organized, from the ticketing to the lining up. The only downside was ferry staff required the 80 or so passengers who were not a part of a local tour group leave the protection of the covered queue: the unfortunates in the line (including my group) had to wait in the cold wind and rain for more than 20 minutes while a ferry boarded the fortunate (in the special tour group) in comfort, sans wind or rain. (Adult basic round trip $39) Once aboard, the trip went great. This is not a slow boat - we were tooling right along for the 20 or so minutes it took to get from the City to the Island. Given the raw weather outside it was great to shelter in the covered seating below the outside seating. Shepler's crew also did their best to help with our luggage: they gathered our stuff when we purchased our tickets, so we were free to wander around Mackinaw City until it was time to board. (Tipping is appropriate.) Offloading was a bit trickier, as we sought to have the luggage gathered by the horse-drawn taxis that would take us to our condo on the island. Took a while but ultimately Shepler's crew got our bags and transferred them to a taxi. Great service, good coordination, slight bumps making us wait in the rain so that the privileged few could board their own ferry ahead of us, but altogether a great experience.
