I arrived to my 2:40 PM appointment about five minutes early. As soon as I checked in at the desk, the receptionist directed me into an exam room to get my shot. The nurse, Norine, was upbeat and positive. She asked a few questions- the usual consent to receive the vaccine, and that I had not tested positive for COVID recently or received antibody treatments. Norine said she'd been giving COVID-19 vaccines every day since February, and she was a pro. I barely felt the needle. My second appointment is in three weeks, as I got the Pfizer vaccine. I waited for 15 minutes before leaving, which is standard for COVID-19 shots. There are no magazines in the waiting room, so if you don't want to be on your phone, take a magazine or book. Parking is free in the large lot, and I only spent about 20 minutes total (shot + wait) here. The one side effect I experienced was soreness at the injection site, for about a day. The only thing that could've improved my experience would be a fun band-aid or a sticker, but alas, I got a shot of hope for returning to normal in the future.

I had a very concerning experience at East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant involving a…read morenurse who identified herself as Wendy. My cousin, a Puerto Rican American, came to the ER with severe abdominal/side/back pain and was visibly crying and in significant distress. She called me earlier that evening crying and asking for help. When I arrived at approximately 11:00 PM, I personally observed that she was still in severe pain and distress. What concerns me most is that it was not until after I arrived, spoke with the nursing staff, and requested that another nurse assist my cousin that she received medication from a different nurse. After that nurse, Nicki, administered the medication, I personally watched my cousin finally begin to get relief. She was able to sit up, talk to me, and most importantly, she was no longer crying and visibly suffering from the severe pain she had been experiencing. That made the earlier lack of relief especially concerning to me. I had also requested that Wendy no longer care for my cousin because my cousin had become uncomfortable with the way she was being treated. Despite that request, Wendy returned to the room. My cousin was asking reasonable questions about how long she would have to wait for her ultrasound. She was already extremely anxious and began visibly shaking. Instead of helping calm the situation, Wendy told her to "stop acting like a child and start acting like an adult." I found that completely inappropriate toward a patient who was already experiencing severe pain and distress. I was also concerned that medication was brought into the room without a clear explanation of what it was before my cousin took it. I believe patients should be clearly informed about medications they are being given. Eventually, another nurse came into the room and treated my cousin with kindness and professionalism. That nurse even apologized for what had happened earlier. The contrast between the two interactions was significant. To be clear, my concern is not simply that the ER could not immediately determine the cause of my cousin's pain. We understand that emergency medicine involves testing and uncertainty. My concern is how my cousin was treated while she was seeking care and particularly the fact that she remained in severe distress until after I intervened and another nurse provided medication, after which I personally witnessed a significant improvement in her condition. We are still waiting to submit a formal complaint to ask the hospital to review the entire encounter, including the medication administration record, nursing documentation, and staff conduct. If you visit this ER, advocate for yourself, ask questions about medications before taking them, and bring someone you trust with you if possible. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect when they are at their most vulnerable.

I was in significant pain and honestly wasn't expecting much when we arrived. First, the not-so-great: getting to the ER entrance was a little confusing. The entrance isn't particularly well marked, and once inside, the facility is little dingy. The reception staff are tucked into what feels like a little hole of an office, and the waiting room is worn. The TV was blasting, and someone was watching videos on their phone without earbuds, so it wasn't exactly a peaceful environment--but it's an ER, so I certainly wasn't expecting a spa. What impressed me was the people. The reception staff were incredibly kind. The nurses were wonderful. The attending physician was attentive, professional, and reassuring. The X-ray technician was also kind and efficient. Every single person we encountered treated me with loads of care and patience. Most importantly, the care was prompt and well organized. I was evaluated, had the X-ray I needed, and we were out in about two hours. Probably under two hours. Thank you to everyone who took care of me. You made a painful and stressful situation so much easier.

I know, as a former member of the best armed service (Navy, thank you very much), that there are those who will under the best of circumstances, complain about anything and everything that doesn't suit the immediate need. I'm here to tell EVERYONE that the Ralph H Johnson VA medical center gives its all to serve the Veterans in Charleston. If you are a Veteran, engaged in your own healthcare, you WILL be impressed. But let's not disparage those who are less engaged; we don't know their circumstances. I digress. I'm impressed with the care I receive, even during the current pandemic. I've been able to appoint in a reasonable time with every needed service, and I have yet to be disappointed in either outpatient or inpatient care (yes, I have had to spend a few nights there). My first visit with Melissa Altman she listened, took my concerns seriously, and made sure that I got to ask any questions I had. My second visit was just as great and I was extremely satisfied with the lab results and the treatment plan prescribed. The rest of the office staff are so friendly and welcoming. I had to bring my toddler with me and he is all over the place and they were so understanding and tolerant of him. They accommodated my son and me and I am so grateful. For a medical center that has signs posted on their front door claiming they are taking precautions against COVID, I was alarmed the office was not promoting mask use. I thought this misfortune would end at the door, yet when Melissa Altman RN then met me for my appointment and was also not wearing one at all, she told me I could take mine off if it made me feel comfortable which obviously it did not and she didn't put on a mask to meet my comfort level displayed. I can't proceed with a medical treatment by professionals that are not even taking the virus seriously. Otherwise I think I would've continued with Merge Medical.
