Wow! My wife and I really like how our project came out and working with James Fahy is why. It was a fairly big project in our minds, money wise, time wise, with lots of critical decisions. We had a new front wall, stairs and patio poured from a set of plans an architect drew up 3 years ago. James interpreted the plans, worked as a general contractor managing the concrete work, plumbing, fencing and landscape. When there were problems or questions James always had solutions and found ways to save money in some of the design elements so we could use it in others. And after it was done and we paid up, James' agents Luis and Sid caught me at home to ask if everything had turned out the way we expected. I'm sure they came by other times when I wasn't home to check things out. If I were to make any changes I'd probably reduce the number of lights we installed and I would have eliminated the "topcast" finish on the driveway so it would be more smooth and industrial. I think Ann would have liked a concrete color that was a little less pink. But we were new to this type of design and James helped us with our ideas like the professional he is. Working with Deep Rooted was a great experience. We knew we wanted to make our backyard an area for guests and entertainment but didn't know where to start. James, the owner came over for a free consultation which we booked right on their website. He recommended a design but we opted to work together without a plan since we had a few concepts to build off of. Now our backyard has a custom built fire pit on a concrete patio with cobblestones, along with built in concrete bench seating! Not to mention the entire yard is landscaped... We always knew what was going on and they gave us tons of finishes to choose from which made it really fun. The only hiccup was the El Niño storm that delayed our project a week. The crew showed up a little late but immediately started to remove the turf, a couple dozen native plants, a drip irrigation, gravel and rocks. Earlier this year, I wandered into the new offices of Deep Rooted Designs in Golden Hill. I have an old 1920's house in North Park. James was great with the design of the patio, picking out really beautiful accent tiles and also designed an amazing arbor that was really beyond our expectations. What I liked most about working with the Deep Rooted Design crew was their desire to make sure we were satisfied with the end result. As with any project, you have things that come up that change and evolve as the project is underway. The key is making sure you're on the same page, communicating as much as possible along the way so you end up with what you had envisioned. Her knowledge of plants and design, as well as, her ability to take my ideas and skillfully render them into a beautiful blueprint made this process very enjoyable. It's also important to me that as hard as these guys work on demolition, laying a flagstone patio and pathway, spreading crushed rock etc. they seem to be treated well by management. I know this comes from good leadership, and James gives the impression that he cares. His project coordinator, Luis, is also someone who is trustworthy, and dependable. If I ever had a concern or question, he always responded in a timely manner, and I felt like I could count on him to make sure things got done. I was reluctant for a long time to pay someone to do the landscaping in my yard because I figured if I weren't being lazy I could do it myself. After several years of hating being in my yard because there was so much to do every time I went out there, I finally decided to hire someone. After interviewing several landscape design companies over a period of about a year, I decided to go with James and Deep Rooted. I have been enjoying my new yard for the last two months and it was definitely worth the cost....even if I had actually ever done the yard myself, I would never have done such a great job. James was upfront about costs and worked with me to prioritize what I wanted to meet my budget. Louis and his crew did an amazing dig out of a hill of ficus tree roots and turned it into a firepit area. A friend recommended James with Deep Rooted Designs to me while I was interviewing Landscape companies for my backyard remodel. I have owned my house in North Park for 20 years, and the backyard has needed a 'make-over' since day 1. After working with contractors over the years for remodeling other areas of my home, I knew I wanted to work with a contractor who could do the whole project start to finish ( design & installation). After meeting with several contractors I selected Deep Rooted Designs based on my meeting with James. He listened, made suggestions, explained how he worked and what the progression of the project would be and then he did not apply and pressure. I did some further research on his company and decided to move forward. The first step was working with the designer, Morganne, who was terrific. She came to the house several times and translated our ideas to paper. James then came up with a to-scale plan for the yard. After pricing things out, the Pavers I had originally selected were out of my budget. James came up with an a less expensive alternative that I think looks even better than what I had originally envisioned. Luis was my project manager during the remodel. Luis was fantastic! His crew showed up every day on time and worked amazingly hard. They were curious and respectful of my property and I felt absolutely comfortable with the work they were doing. Luis kept me informed at each step of the process. As in all major projects surprises come up and you have to make adjustments to the original plan. This happened at one point during the project and Luis was great at making suggestions that worked out perfectly. The entire project took about 4 weeks and the result is I have an outdoor living space that is as lovely as any room in the house.
