I had a deeply disappointing experience at Decatur Auto Tech, and I feel it's important to share. I brought in my 2008 Mazda Miata for a few specific issues, including a non-working cigarette lighter. I was quoted $90 for a basic adapter--far above normal pricing. After I questioned it, they agreed to reduce the charge by $60, but only knocked off $30 in the final bill. More frustratingly, part of the reason I agreed to the repair was their assurance that it would restore connectivity to my stereo. It didn't. When I brought this to their attention, their response was dismissive and unprofessional--essentially telling me "tough luck," with no attempt to stand by their work. They also performed services I never explicitly authorized, and only informed me of a $60 increase in the cooling fan price after the work had begun--leaving me with no meaningful opportunity to make an informed decision. What's worse, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being taken advantage of as a woman. The way I was spoken to, disregarded, and overcharged raised red flags that I believe many women will unfortunately recognize. It was condescending and exploitative. Between the inconsistent pricing, unauthorized work, failed repairs, and dismissive behavior, I left feeling unheard and taken advantage of. ** 1/5 -- BEWARE!** Decatur Auto Tech is the definition of a **rip-off shop**. I took my daughter's car in for an A/C issue -- an issue they had supposedly "fixed" not long ago. The car should've been under warranty, but they still tried to charge a **$75 diagnostic fee**. When I called them out on it, their **clueless front desk guy** awkwardly agreed to waive it. Spoiler: it was STILL on the final invoice. They kept the car overnight and then **called my daughter LATE at night** -- not even me -- to tell her the cabin filter needed replacing. When I followed up the next day, I was hit with a quote of **$290**. For what? Here's the breakdown: - $75 diagnostic fee (that was supposed to be waived) - $90 for a cabin filter (you can buy a good one for $20!) - $40 for two cans of freon - $160 in labor What makes it worse? **They did this same exact job the first time for $120.** How do you go from $120 to $290 for the SAME issue? This place is shady, dishonest, and clearly **preys on people who don't know much about cars** -- or who send their daughters in hoping for honest service. After reading more reviews, it's obvious I'm not alone. They held my car for 4 months with numerous errors and delayed repairs and delivery of services A simple fuel pump was replaced in error and they lied several times indicating they would reorder the part . She said on today, 4.27.24 that my car is hers now, watch me take your car in front of two witnesses. She's very rude and tries to over talk you with her fast talking language. I do not recommend this business. A piece of my car's splash guard fell off. I went to them to have it reinstalled; they did the work in 30 minutes and charged me $85. Too much. Then when I got home, looked in the back, and the big plastic piece they were supposed to install was still in there, NOT INSTALLED. So I drove back and they made it right. I asked what work they did do for $85 and he showed me some little screws that he'd inserted around the motor. Really? For $85?! What a rip off. Taking my business elsewhere. read more

I have used Decatur Auto Tech 4 separate times for various repairs on my 06' Acura MDX. I have never been happier with the overall service, repairs, and price. All the times I got it serviced it was done in the same day and being a savvy car owner I have verified their prices were the most competitive by calling around to other certified repair shops. The CV Joint repair was almost a full 30% cheaper than the Goodyear place close to my home. I would recommend them to anyone who owns a Honda, Acura, Hyundai. Had to return three times to fix the issues that should've been fixed the first time. All I got from it was the same issues reoccurring three months later and a top brake light that is now permanently broken because the mechanics were too lazy to screw it back on correctly. The main person at the front desk interrupted me constantly when I tried explaining my issues, and that led to a series of miscommunications of what needed to be fixed on the car. They fixed a cut ABS wire and did a a diagnostic for me and were very professional and quick. They were inexpensive comparatively, and were honest about a transmission issue that I was having and told me I'd be better just trading in the vehicle instead of fixing it. read more

We read all the good reviews here on yelp and decided to give them a chance. Our car was (and still is) overheating. Initially the lady that works there said radiator needed to be changed about $600 total. So we agreed on that fix ONLY. When we called to check on the car she said the radiator was replaced but the car is still overheating. She kept talking over us and we couldn't get a concrete answer from her. She mentioned a thermostat needed to be changed and we kept asking for cost. We could not spent more than we originally agreed. She kind of "yelling" told us to give her until Monday. She did not follow up with calls as she said she would. We had to keep calling back and she would not give us prices or real status. Basically would brush us off with "we are ordering parts", "we are busy and call you later" and etc. At this point we are beyond frustrated. We wanted our car back we cannot afford to pay more than the initial $600 plus how can we trust them if it went from radiator only fix to explorative fixes. Finally almost a week later we tell her we need the estimate and we need to know what is wrong with our car. She sends us a bill with all kinds of extra stuff to fix costing almost $1600 to fix the car. Of course we are not doing that and also who knows where it will end up at in regards to money. So, we ask for our car back and she keeps telling us how our car engine is going to blow up and seriously putting fear on us. We wanted out of this frustrating situation. She then charges us a total of $800 bucks including stuff we didn't authorize. We only agreed on $600 but not on paper BIG mistake! We tried to get her to lower back to the AGREED price and her response was "nope". It was a very unprofessional communication and seriously borderline abusive at times. This has been the worse experience we ever had with a mechanic shop. We would NEVER go there again. Please go elsewhere if you want to keep your sanity. A) I wish she was upfront that she did not know if replacing the radiator would actually fix the problem B) She had acquired approval BEFORE doing more work C) they diagnosed the car correctly initially instead of tricking us to pay for them to experiment... started at $600 and ended wanting over $1500 to finish fixing it! Jiffy lube and Goodyear Tire tried to pull a fastone on me. Of course they are super conservative on what they think is a needed for my car. Estimated cost for a transmission flush was 180.00. Being a woman, I wanted a 3rd opinion. Came here and the mechanic said my transmission fluid looks fine, nothing to worry about, but if I want I can get it changed at my next oil change, but it's not required. My thing is, why mess with it if you don't have to ? I think Vi is the owner, and she's very nice, pretty busy shop. They're no the best at customer service, but they get the job done. Oil change is 28.00, comparable to Jiffy Lube. I'd come back if I need an opinion or work done on my car. I really appreciate the honesty! read more

Brought it in and a full inspection for $30.00 saved me over $1000 in future repairs. The shop is amazing. Called for their towing service and they put me in touch with DMurray Towing. Turn around time was excellent - he was there to get my car in less than thirty minutes. Mr. Murray is very friendly, prompt, and really knows his craft. My car was in a difficult location and he got it on the truck no problem, then unloaded it in my apartment's small parking lot even quicker. Not to mention he has very reasonable prices. These guys rock! Saved me a lot of money and did a great job. I was told my car needed a head gasket and possibly a new engine. Based on a recommendation from a friend, I brought my car nearly 50 miles to this shop and it was well worth it! The car needed a water pump and thermostat, not a head gasket - which is what I was told by another mechanic. I called about having my Tahoe worked on and they said it would take about two weeks so I went ahead and dropped it off. A month later they had made no progress and could not even give me a date it would be ready by or a price. When I went to pick it up they said they had taken my engine apart and they couldn't give it back to me after a month of having it. They said it would be ready the next day and I told them that was unacceptable and that there was no reason for the engine to be taken apart when they hadn't even started working on it yet. The lady was extremely rude and told me "Fine it will be ready by 5." when I insisted I wanted it today or I would report their business. I don't know why this wasn't an option before. When I got here at 5 it wasn't ready still and they said they disconnected the battery and said it would be another 15-30 minutes before they had it charged enough for me to drive it to another place. I'm so disappointed in their customer service and business. The fact that they took it apart and had not done anything on it after a month goes to show that they do not stick to their words or estimates and do not know how to run a business. On top of everything else they lost the emissions paper and all their paperwork on my vehicle that I needed to take to a new mechanic. I have never been to a more disorganized establishment in my life. I would not waste my time here because you will be waiting for your car a lot longer than they said without possibly even getting the work done. read more

They called said fuse box shortage need to replace it, then, called 2 days later to say the motor is out in the wipers. Total of $656.00. Come pick truck up now the ABS light was on. Trying to say it was on before, it was not. Then turn the head lights on the high beams will not got off. She states they didn't touch the component of the switch. Was not responsible. . She was very rude, cutting me off in the explanation of whats wrong with my truck. Walked off.. I called the police. The police advised to file claim and now I am in smalls claims court. I have taken my X-terra to V for years. As is mentioned earlier, they are conservative with repairs. I have never had anything unnecessary pushed on me. To the contrary, they do wait until the repair is needed. More than once, when I was given a lesser estimate from another shop I have been told that was a good price and I should go there. I have been treated respectfully. The mechanic has often taken me to the garage to show me exactly what the problem was. They are a very busy, very straightforward shop. This is the ONLY mechanic I have used in 20+ years who has not tried to sell me things unneeded, who has not played games, who I know I can simply trust. -And their rates are generally, at least, 10% less than anywhere else.
