The pros: excellent atmosphere with a great nostalgia. Good conversation and really makes you feel welcomed. The cons: haircut was just ok. I've received 5x better hair cuts from Great Clips for half the price. After moving to Fort Collins last August (2018), and giving up on growing out my hair, I decided to finally get it cut. Buddy of mine gets his hair cuts here and always seems pleased; but that was not the experience for me. I think it may have been Tom cutting my hair. Extremely friendly man. Really makes you feel welcomed. But a word of advice, Tom: you probably shouldn't talk about how you're really starting to feel the arthritis in your hands at old age; and how you just can't grip a comb the way you used to; all while cutting a person's hair. My hair can be difficult with a few different cowlicks in spots and the curl at longer lengths, but from the get-go, Tom seemed clueless about common hair style terms. In addition, he wasn't very thorough with the clippers. Came home noticing long hairs untouched all over the sides and back of my head where the clippers were used. Hot shave on the neck was great, except it was terribly crooked. And as most have said, he took off way more from the top than I would have desired. Even showed a picture, and said, "longer than that," but the length came out the same or shorter. Long story short, I enjoyed my time in the shop, felt that I was receiving a good cut, but came home and started noticing all of these flaws. Honestly would not recommend going here, unless you are in need of a really simple cut. Tom couldn't even handle a scissor cut, side part with tight sides. read more

Friday afternoon I got a terrible haircut from Tom. I'm giving my review 2 stars simply because I have no experience with anyone else at the Deans. If Tom was the only person to review I'll give him a zero on listening and finesse, and a 5 on military haircuts. If that's what you want he's your guy. On a personal note, Tom does seem like a genuinely pleasant guy. My haircut sucks though. In a nutshell Tom did not listen to my request for "about an inch length on top, slightly shorter on the sides, and a little taper down the sides." Every other barber I've been to in my 43 years of life understands that. Tom gave me a straight up buzz. I knew it was going to be bad as soon as he grabbed the clippers and went to town. It was too late, all I could do was smile and nod like some sort of victim. The sides are back are about 1/8" and buzzed so freaking short my scalp is visible all the way around my head!! WTF!! The top is about 3/4" long. Also, the thinning bald spot on my head could not be more in the spotlight. Pretty embarrassing look for me. I love being greeted by my 10 year old son with "wow, you're bald spot is really visible now!" I got myself into this situation because my last haircut was 2 months ago. Late Friday afternoon I realized I needed a haircut before Monday morning and would have no opportunity to go on the weekend. What a friggin mistake. Ask for Dean if you have to go. From the sounds of the other reviews and photos of Dean cutting hair, it appears he possesses the subtle skill of listening. On the other hand if you want to display your scalp and bald spots to the world, give Tom a call. From at least 2 other reviews I read (too late) it appears Tom possesses this skill. read more

Great cut in a phenomenal hometown barber shop. A must visit for tourists and residents alike. Perfect location and conversation to boot.

I've gone to Dean's on and off over the years. Here's my assessment: Atmosphere: Clean 50's era barber shop. Apparently it has been a barber shop for like 100 years in that spot. Pretty cool. Right on College Ave, with a big window out front so you can watch people walk by as you get your hair cut. Cost: I think it was $13 for a regular men's haircut the last time I went a couple months ago. Barbers: Dean and Max are the regulars. One other gentleman covers for Max sometimes. All are SUPER nice guys and give a good haircut. Max has a little lighter touch with the clipper than Dean. Cut: I've had good cuts there, but a few times they've tended to go shorter than I've asked for. They don't do a straight razor clean up after the cut, which I'd rather have. Wait: It can get pretty busy there, and I've waited up to 45 minutes before. They are all walk-in basis. Overall: Great guys, decent haircut, and the price is good. read more

The Past Life: Have gone to Dean's for years and years; since I was short enough for the booster seat, in fact. I was always happy with the cut (as was my mother, when her opinion was the spearhead). The atmosphere was great, the wait sometimes long on weekends, but the banter was always fun to listen to and engage in and made the time worthwhile. Enough time in the chair and you got to know these guys on a first-name basis, and wouldn't even mind sitting down to coffee with if you met them outside the shop. Both Dean and Max knew my style and I could always count on "the usual" which was quick, short, and let me go without touching my head for a couple weeks after. When they hired on Art to cover for Max later on, his style was a bit weird, but not terrible, and I was happy with it for the month that it would last. Currently: Dean, Max and Art are now all retired, and Tom has taken over the shop. I am sadly disappointed about this, but life happens. However, in my opinion the service has also taken a bit of a dive. Tom's humor is sometimes a little off-putting (I can't think of any examples, but there's a lot of complaining about life in general that goes on, and so it's no longer light banter). My first time with him in early December was a botched job, leaving me with some weird bowl-cut-looking thing that had no taper. I attributed it to his not actually knowing my head, and decided to give him another chance. Second time in was a fairly long wait in the mid-morning before work. Needless I had to call in late, but I don't normally go in on weekday mornings, so I wouldn't call it a black mark. Secondly, when I explained his mistake from the first visit, he fully understood and managed to actually pull off my usual cut to a satisfactory level of quality! However, my current opinion is despite the adequate work on my head, the atmosphere in the shop is just off enough that I need to find someone new. From the louder, obnoxious, dry humor, the constant, reiterative complaints about how "I need help," "It's only because of the grandfathering in of building codes that we haven't been tagged for the state of the bathroom," and "Yeah, we're getting a credit card machine in here. I don't see how Dean managed to go cash only all these years," and the very odd feeling I get when some strange guy shows up on (I presume) a daily basis to set up a Watchtower proselytizing cart next to the magazine rack, that after a point, it was fairly wearisome and frankly, quite uncomfortable during the 45+ minute wait. That and living 30 miles away instead of my former 6 gives me a reason to start searching out new barbers. read more

Just wanted to give a shoutout to these guys. I've lived in Fort Collins for about a year now. I've gone to many different barbers and salons in this city to find someone that will listen and give me the cut that I want. Tom and Melissa are great. My first time in was a week before Christmas, Melissa and Tom were both choppin' and there was about an hour wait. I was greeted with a smile and subtle convo by the others in line. I ended up getting in Melissa's chair and after about 30 minutes of me checking my hair and having her re-do it (until my haircut was acceptable to me) I'm a stickler on my haircut, and I am grateful for her patience as the line only grew and I kept asking for shuttle changes. (Yes I'm that guy) but because she was receptive and patient, I was able to walk outa there with my best haircut here since moving to Foco. I went back yesterday and sat in Toms chair, and after I showed him the photo of what I was looking for in a cut, and a couple changes here and there, I once again walked out with the cut that I wanted. Tom as well was receptive and patient with my slight shuttle changes (and very funny) All-in-all I'm very pleased with these guys. I've tried multiple different salons and barbers and I'm sure they all can give a great cut, but not to my expectation like these guys. Thanks again! read more

Too expensive. I received a haircut and shave and it was $65! I'm a guy who has never paid more than $25 for a haircut and shave. This was absurd and I considered not tipping. In total $70 for a quick trim and a shave job that took 15 min and missed spots on lower neck. The value of the service is nowhere close to $65. I felt ripped off. read more

Tom was a lifesaver this morning!! My son received a bad haircut last night (that's another review!) and I attempted to fix it and it went horribly wrong! I frantically brought him in before school this morning. I thought the shop opened at 7am but in fact it opened at 730. We were waiting in the car when Tom arrived at 709. I hopped out and told him my story and he was so gracious and let us in early! I was able to get my son to school on time with a better hair cut and I made it to work. Thank you Tom!!! read more

I had a terrible experience here. The dude cut off 8 inches of hair when I asked for a trim of 1 inch! What?! He also made fun of me when I told him I didnt want a fade (probably the only haircut he knows how to do) and suggested i was balding and in denial. I am 19 and most definitely not balding. Would never waste my money here again. read more

The guys that run this shop are as friendly as can be, I walked in off the street because my mane was in dire need of taming, there were two gentlemen working and one had just wraoped up with the client, the other (I believe it was Dean) jumped up to help me, gave me a solid cut in a little under 20 minutes and it cost less than 20 bucks, it's nothing fancy, but they get the job done quick and with a smile, I'll likely come back when we move here this summer. read more

I've dropped in a few times for a trim, nice clean shop and friendly barbers. These guys are traditional and will cut you short with precision. I like their work and their simplicity. Next time I'll try a flat top. read more

This barber shop may work for some but I just got the worst haircut of my life from Tom--and I'm 67. I have male pattern baldness which is apparently hard to work on since Tom spent much of the haircut telling me so. Hey Tom, I asked you to leave enough hair that I could sort of sweep it back. What I got was a clear-cut stubble field above the ears topped off by a lunatic fringe that looks like it was bowl-cut. Here's an business opportunity: open a hat shop next to Dean's Barber Shop. I haven't taken mine off since yesterday's butchering and won't for some time. Nice enough guy, but if you don't have a clue as to how to cut a guy's hair then ask, don't just keep hacking away until there's nothing left to chop. read more

This deserves zero stars. I went in for a very simple trim, asked for 1.5 to 2 inches off of all sides of my head. I pointed to the place on my forehead where that would be, and said I wanted the same amount taken off of all sides. The first thing my barber did was run an electric razor up the side of my head. He didn't listen to what I was saying, and took off between 3 and 5 inches all the way around. My bangs are at a 20 degree angle, with patches in them. I will never go back here again, even if I have to pay twice as much for a hair salon to do an incredibly simple trim. As he put it, they usually "count on hair to grow out." read more
