I usually find myself in all types of gallery's when I attend my cousin Sophia's art shows but this event was particularly peculiar because it was held in the 101 year old Deagan Music Building. What once was a plant that sold, assembled, and repaired mallet percussion instruments and was seen as the backbone of the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago is now converted and moderneeized on the inside with preserved details like old mailboxes, swing door elevator, central staircase and of course the amazing clock tower. Deagan currently holds 5 floors with several studios in each floor and is home to an array of artists and business.
I attended Toil & Trouble fine art show, show casing three dark artists held on one of the 5th floor studios. The owner of the studio lent them his studio. To the left was his gallery/show room and to the right was an intriguing tattoo parlor. The tattoo parlor was off limits to the public for the night but from the looks of it there was a huge black skull painted on the wall next to beautifully draped loft windows, a tattoo chair, and waiting area. This particular studio was large and inviting. I was told the owner has a second studio that he uses specifically as his workshop and it was much more interesting than the gallery. I wish I could have peeked in.
The artists we're all welcoming, greeted warmly and were friendly in discussing their pieces. Rows of intricate craftsmanship allowed the imagination to roam the dark realm. Price points ranged from $300-$700. These three girls did goolish-ly great in executing this event! read more
