It's hard to see someone cook something and not be able to taste it in the demos. Well I finally got to try the cooking. The dinner went as follows: -Squid. Black Sesame, Soy, Lime -"Grains and Seeds" -Celery Root, Lemon, Wood Sorrel -Scallop, Potato, Sweet and Sour Mustard -"Ocean and Land" -Milk Mousse, Mandarin, Endive -"Olive" Food was fantastic all around. Their cooking is reminiscent of a wave of chefs like Christian Puglisi of Relae and Inazki Aizpitarte of Chateaubriand. Very few, simple ingredients but very complex flavor profile combinations. Just beautiful amazing cooking. After chatting extensively with Daan the Front Of the House representative during the dinner and then getting to hang with him, Koen and Davy during the Omnivore conference, Im convinced that I need a revisit to their cuisine and experience at Veranda. Daan, Koen. Davy, we look forward to seeing you in Antwerp.

I felt a pang of nostalgia while dining at De Veehandel: I used to come here more often when I…read moreworked in Antwerp more than a decade ago, maybe even two (yes I am that old). Back then it was a thriving restaurant and one of the places to be in Antwerp if you were looking for a good steak. I am not sure if it is me who has changed or the restaurant but I have been traveling more to good steakhouses all over the world and I found my last visit to De Veehandel unimpressive vs some other of my faves. The starter (Tomate Crevette) was taste-wise not bad but presentation was a bit sloppy. Also the steak is just a-ok, nothing special. In addition, I feel like the service is just average. All-in all just a meh experience. Nothing much to complain but I wasn't wowed either. I really think De Veehandel has had it's best days and there are better places to eat steak in Belgium.

We spent 100's of Euros and ordered 4 different cuts. Not one was what it supposed to be. The rib-eye was a gigantic piece of black fat with a small bit of dry pink flesh attached. The' fillet pure' which should be the tenderest part of beef was a 39 euro piece of chewy old rump steak. An atrocious experience.

The wait staff were incredibly helpful and made several suggestions but I ended up with the Flemish Stew because that's what I came in for. This Stew was probably some of the most tenderest beef I've ever had in my life. It practically melted in my mouth and the gravy was wonderful. Being from the US all that extra gravy would have been great with mashed potatoes but their standard side is an order of French fries. I'm glad we followed our gut on this one, pun intended, because this will go down South far as the best Flemish Stew I've had on our trip so far. We have more Belgian destinations to go to but they've set a pretty high standard.

Our server gave us recommendations of the menu when we asked. He spoke English and chatted with us about music festivals. We started with two main entrees. We were about to order a third, and the server warned us that it would be too much food. In the end it was, but we got a take away box.. The stoofvlees (Flemish beef stew) is what they're known for, and it is good. But the varkenswangetjes was way better. They both have the same sauce, but the meat was more tender. The third dish was stoemp van de week that we just wanted to try. It wasn't as delicious as the pork cheek dish. We got charged for "supp. aardappel", but I couldn't figure out what it was. Maybe the two take away boxes? *Note, the Yelp check in offer is cap. Credit card accepted.

The short of it: - Belgian cuisine…read more- small and cozy restaurant - this place can get crowded - make reservations for groups - Favs: cheese croquette, videe The long of it: Finally had some real Belgian cuisine on this trip and I didn't really have high expectations, but this restaurant had really good food and I was pleasantly surprised how good my Belgian meal was. I'll have to apologize in advance that I don't know all the names of the food we ordered in Belgian. To start we had the shrimp and cheese croquettes. I didn't care much for the shrimp, but the cheese croquette was excellent. As an entree I ordered the videe which is kind of like a deconstructed chicken pot pie. There was a round puff pastry in the middle of the plate surround by a creamy sauce with pieces of chicken, mushrooms, and meatballs. It was really good and my favorite dish out of all the items. Other items that I got to try that were ordered in our party were the mousttaka (eggplant lasagna), beef stew (very tender), and the schnitzel (breaded fried pork chop, it was a bit tough). With our entrees, we all got a big bowl of fries to share. Belgians love their fries here! I thought the fries paired well with the videe and beef stew, cause you can dip your fries in the gravy goodness! Overall, Belgian food is great and you can never go wrong with pairing it with fries!
