The hubby ordered the BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, & tomato) with a fried egg on a soft focaccia/panini like bread. After one bite, the yolk of his fried egg oozed out like a real bleeder; well done Canteen. He wolfed down his sandwich within 5 minutes and said it was "super yummy". I got the beet salad with baby spinach, ricotta and walnuts. Simple yet so good with the shredded beets and onions. It's a satisfying salad. Hubby doesn't normally eat greens but he cleaned up the rest of my salad too. It was a great meal. Definitely stop by this cute cafe if you're in the area.

The Short: Great breakfast at an affordable price…read more The Long: I got a take-away coffee from this business yesterday and it was fantastic. Based on this, we decided to avoid trying one of the cursed Rumba Resort Restaurants of doom below us and head a block away for something a little more genuine. We weren't disappointed with Chilli Jam Cafe. On the order today was the Big Breakfast ($12.95) with a substitution of extra mushies for beans (no extra charge), John's Breakfast ($9.95) with a substitution of avocado for tomato, Fresh Orange Juice ($6), and some coffees. The Big Brekky is a measure I use to judge a cafe. I was really wanting to try the Lambs Fry brekky (which is apparently something customers come in specially for), but I was gagging for some eggy action for brekky, and had to go Big. The poached eggs were a little on the underdone side, but that just means you can smash your toast into them and get that flavour going. The sausage was a pork and herb offering, and it was not one of those fine paste meat varieties: it actually had some really nice texture to it. Next time I would substitute another one of these in and opt out of something else next time, because you can never get enough sausage. ;) John's Brekky was a smaller version of the Big Brekky, but was most definitely plentiful and delicious. My wife opted for Scrambled Eggs (because she can't stand "snotty" eggs in general), and was pleased with her choice: they were well cooked and seasoned. The avocado substituted in was fresh, and was a lovely accompaniment spread on the toast. We both opted for multigrain bread which was slathered in butter and was delicious on it's own. But when you mashed it around into the various offerings on the plate, it was even better. The Fresh OJ was served in a Mason Jar, and was pretty big for $6. I could have easily done another. It's really tempting to come back here again for lunch, because the lure of the specials board really did read well. You can also do this thing were you pre-order your lunch for the next day and get a discount for doing so.

Noosa's beautiful but rocky setting leaves limited space for decent places to eat, but a jaunt up…read morethe river to Noosaville revealed a number of reasonably promising places, including this health food-ish cafe. It had tacky chairs, but a decent river view. The menu offered something for most any diet, and the bean-based wrap I had yielded a satisfying crunch of fresh vegetables. The egg was perfect, and the Reuben was delicious as well. For lunch, I had the whiting fish and chips. While the fish was a touch thin, the battering and frying were perfect. Both times, I also had espresso, which was carefully made with good-quality beans. What isn't so great: The $10 happy hour drink specials are on the watery side and made without fresh ingredients (e.g. sour mix). Between major meals, there is a really limited menu. Located near the park and beach in a great little local strip of shops with 2 cafes, a yoga studio, fish and chip shop and newsagent. Trying to find a table on a Sunday for breakfast, let alone Father's Day, can be a mission but from the moment we approached for a table the staff went out of their way to help us when they were booked out and then move us somewhere more comfortable when it came available. The special Father's Day menu was varied and fresh with beautiful flavours and local produce. Our table had potato rosti with cured trout, poached eggs and a dill and caper holland aide, waffles with caramalised banana and salted caramel and black sticky rice with a poached pear. We also could resist treating the dads to a slice of fudgy chocolate brownie. All of our meals were excellent, well portioned without being ridiculous. Our coffees were good and as a spy drinker I'm happy to say they serve bonsoy. All in all this was a great cafe experience, particularly on what is a busy time of year. I'd be happy to come back and more than happy to recommend it over most of our food experiences of Mooloolaba from previous visits.
