Their rabbit stew was also very delicious and it paired so well with their fries. I'm usually not a big fan of fries, but I could not stop eating them. Service: We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to quickly accommodate us as we got there a bit before rush hour. However, I would definitely recommend making a reservation as it gets pretty busy, especially with locals. All the staff were very nice and attentive as well! Ambiance: They have several levels to accommodate more people. They have their main bar on the first floor, but you do have to hike up a bit of stairs to get to the restroom as there's a flight of narrow stairs, so be careful. I really enjoyed dining here as it felt like a very local spot. This restaurant was definitely the highlight of our trip to Brussels!

The mussels are fresh and flavorful, and you can't help but slurp, I mean scoop up, some of the cream and garlic sauce in between each mussel. The other items are not bad, but nothing to write home about: Flemish beef stew, meatballs in tomato sauce, or even mussels with plain white wine (1 star off). Overall, Le Bistro is a good...bistro...option for some local foods.

Steps away from the grand palace but no sales person to drag you into their places. We were draw here by the big pots of mussels. The mussels were pretty fresh and delicious with cream white wine sauce which could go well with bread. With some nice beer and other dishes, we really had a satisfying dinner here.

I want to emphasize how terrible the service was by saying we had to literally wait 10-15 minutes just to order (even though we already knew what we wanted right on the get go). My friend and I tried flagging down the waiter/waitress by giving eye contact and raising our hand but it seems like they purposely avoid us. Then after doing this a few times, the waiter comes by and tells us to give them 5 minutes. Like what?? The people next to us was waiting as well until they got impatient and just left. They seriously need to hire more people. Anyways, yelp is about the food. The food was pretty good. I don't mind waiting for quality food at a restaurant but the people working there just need to be a bit more attentive! My friend and I ordered the original mussels and the garlic mussels to share. Instead of doing a whole order of each, we did half and half of each order. I thought the garlic mussels were very tasty and plentiful in meat between the shells. They put a soup base on the bottom and cook these mussels with celery, and onions. Not sure what else they add but very well worth the taste -- couldn't stop drinking the soup event though I know it was loaded with sodium. The order cane with fries and a little wet lemon napkin to wipe your hands. Overall, I did thorough enjoy the food but the service needs some major work (don't know if being American played a role in this though). Come here only if you have time to waste and spend ~1.5 hours. I did go to the schwarma place next door the following day and that was much better food/service! :)

For a main, I chose the duck breast with pink peppercorn cognac cream sauce. Wow! The duck was perfectly cooked. The sauce was tasty without being too heavy, with plenty of fresh mild peppercorns. The entrees come with a small salad & croquettes (plain this time & the only boring point of my meal). I'm very happy that I followed another reviewer's advice of the speculoos tiramisu, it was really special! Cons: the restaurant is a little small, no outdoor seating, & no AC. Pros: English menu, open late, accepts credit cards. And the food is divine!

But if what you actually want is normal Belgian food in a normal place, for a normal price and abnormally smooth & friendly service, this the place for you. The food won't blow your mind, but it's very good if you stick to the Belgian dishes (based on one visit, Belgian bistro food is clearly the culinary sweet spot). Go for cordon bleu, entrecote, white asparagus... You know the drill. House wine perfectly alright. Set us back €17 a head for a main and drinks. Good value in my book. Since I started on hipsters, this place is unassuming even unattractive from the outside, but smother your maybe wannabe internal hipster, give it a go, you'll not be disappointed.

But since we were in Brussels anyway, I figured we might as well try to get the full Belgian experience and try both mussels and beer. Le Chou de Bruxelles certainly did not disappoint -- the food was outstanding, the service impeccable, and the space delightful. The mussels were remarkably fresh and were a bit briny (as all mussels must be) but weren't overly fishy. Le Chou de Bruxelles offers a wide swath of sauces you can pair with your mussels, which is super fun; I ended up doing a more classic combo with white wine, garlic, and several herbs, but it was super tasty -- the herbs were super fresh and brightened up the overall dish, and the white wine was a lovely pairing with the shellfish. We also got their caprese salad, which was super tasty; the mozzarella was incredibly fresh and the tomato was perhaps the best tomato my friend had ever tried. It was presented in a rather entertaining way, with the tomato cut in half and hollowed out, then with the mozzarella packed inside the tomato. The service was also phenomenal and absolutely on-point. We were seated in the back of the restaurant right next to the patio door, so a few bees flew in and circled around our heads during our meal, but the staff was super friendly in helping us push the bees back outside. Vibes-wise, the restaurant is gorgeous and lively. It's a little bit out of the way from Central Brussels, so you end up with a good mix of locals and tourists. Absolutely love this spot and can't wait to come back in my next trip to Brussels!
