One of the best meals I've had in my 15 years of traveling to this city…read more If I were to sum this place up in a slogan, it's "Refined without being pretentious" 5 Course "surprise"/ tasting menu with wine pairing. Was just amazing. New and interesting approaches and presentations at classic Nederlands/ "Dutch" tastes. And an excellent value. Every ingredient is purported to be of product of the Netherlands; other than the wines. Amuse-bouche was interesting with a vegetable shooter, mini savory pastries and a madeleine type of cake in a sweet/ savoury puree. Started with an ossenworst type of dish, but it was served more in a tartare format, traditionally dressed with the tastes of pickled cucumber & onion (appearing as purees) and mustard .. but the mustard was in the form of an ice cream.. which being colder than the tartare, made it such a great experience. Nice Pinot Noir to go with it. Second course was these beautifully textured cod fish cheeks that must have been delicately poached, along side of North Sea/ 'grey' shrimp and dressed with beet root and a bacon-fat foam. Amazing. The wine was a Chardonnay from Edd's, a Dutch ex-pat's vineyard in the Algarve, and one which I was so impressed by that I've already ordered a case. Perfect pair. Third/ Main was a nice sirloin cut of beef cooked to perfection, in terms of the inside, for a nice, even texture; though I wish it was a bit more scorched on the outside to add a bit of layering to the bite and char to the taste. This was served with spots of puree of vegetables and stalks of cut white hollands asparagus. A Syrah blend from Edd's helped this one along as it was delicious. The cheese course was incredible. Starting from left to right in terms of intensity, these Dutch cheeses could go head to head with any in Europe.. To get in to detail here I'd be lying because at that point the conversation at the huge round table, aided by the great wines, has left some holes in my memory.. but it was delicious.. and paired with a nice Porto that complemented the cheeses, particularly the Munster-ish(?) semi-soft cow with annatto rind, was out of this world. And a week later, I can still taste the blue cheese which the dish ended with. The dessert was a nutty chocolate cake that resembled a brownie, served with a simple ice cream and strawberries. Paired with an ultra sweet dessert wine; details on which have escaped me but it was chocolatey and nutty just like the dish. Great. The service was ultra-friendly and kind.. on the upscale-casual side, for better or worse at times. We felt welcome, accommodated and most importantly, comfortable throughout the excellent meal. Atmosphere was likewise A+. Love this place. Will be back for sure, and as I am doing now, will be recommending it. P.S. They do accept American Express/ AMEX.

Probably the best dining experience I had in Amsterdam. Came here for my last night in Amsterdam…read moreand it was a great way to end my trip altogether. My friend and I pretty much did a three course meal here and it was one hell of a three course meal. We started our with Greetje's Big Beginning which included all 6 of their starters including Roulade of Spring Chicken, Pickled and Smoked Sea Bream Fillet, Mousse of Dutch Lady Blue Cheese, Bouillon of Dutch Beefsteak Tomatoes, Green Pea Soup (which I liked the best), and Crispy Sautéed Black Pudding. For the main course I got the Lamb (Greetje's favorite) which is a roasted fillet of lamb with green asparagus, green beans, potato gratin and its own gravy with heather honey. Very highly recommend this selection for your main. The course was then followed by the Greetje's Grand Finale which included all of their desserts on their menu. All of this came at the cost of €55 per person which is quite the deal. The service is phenomenal. They were very welcoming and made sure you watch your steps going up as some of the steps were taller than others. Very helpful recommendations were provided and recommendations on what to eat first when the Greetje's Big Beginning and the Greetje's Grand Finale came out added to the dining experience. Highly recommended spot to book a reservation when in Amsterdam.

I have no idea how "authentic" it really is, but the chef is an older guy who comes out and tells you what's on that night's tasting menu before you order, which checks off a bunch of boxes on the "authentic" checklist. The food itself was really great -- the tasting menu on our night was shrimp, red mullet + mixed seafood, duck, and a cheese plate. All four courses were outstanding. The shrimp was super soft and really interesting, the clams really stood out on the second course, the duck was fantastic, and the cheese course kind of blew us away -- I asked for the strongest ones they had, and they definitely came through, including a pretty stinky blue and a dutch cheese that was just excellent. One recommendation: go with good company. It's roughly one course per 30-60 minutes, so you're gonna be there for a while if you do the tasting menu. We didn't mind this, but with a different group, we may have. The food was really excellent though. Awesome spot.

But nothing could be further from the truth. The food was excellent, the service was respectful but low key and the chairs offer the utmost comfort. I've returned to this restaurant many times over the years and spent long evenings relaxing in those comfortable chairs, enjoying great food, great conversation and feeling very spoilt. I invariably choose a three or four course menu, which changes daily. It's a nice way to try something I might not have chosen from the a la carte menu. I was here again very recently. Fortunately nothing has changed. If I were to make one criticism it is that the house red wine is meant as an aperatif and is not really suited to any of the dishes.

The owners of DCW focuses too much on how food looks and not enough on taste and texture. The menu I had is called "anything but flat" and is inspired by the Dutch landscape. Indeed, the dishes do look like mountains and lakes, which directly translate to chunks of uncut vegetables and occasional soupy mess. I started off with some magnificent chickpea flatbread and kale and walnut pesto. First course was a soup with onion mashed potatoes and sea vegetables. The broth of this dish was way too bitter. Second course was, again, potato, topped with red cabbage and caramelized apples, with rusk and a black bean roll. They put a layer of red cabbage juice infused jelly at the bottom. I'm not sure if they are aware that gelatin is not vegetarian. Furthermore, the menu states that they make everything from scratch. But I saw a box of whole grain biscuit mix in the kitchen, which I guess is what they made the rusk from. Third course, lentils with root vegetables (including guess what, potato), was super bland. Lentils were under seasoned and the vegetables were plain boiled. I don't need parsnip, parsley root, beetroot, sunchoke all on one plate. I just need one that's well cooked. The fourth course, deep fried grapes on top of vanilla cream and forbidden rice was quite successful. Sourness of grapes, sweetness of cream and the wonderful chew of forbidden rice went well together. Last course was the best course of the whole meal- a quad of fried apple pie wonton, orange mint sheet, dark chocolate and lime infused ice. PS. If you're reading this review you probably know their concept. It is not really a restaurant because you have to clear your own table and instead of paying a fixed menu price you decide how much the meal is worth to you. The owners consider existence of a waitstaff a distraction from the food, and they believe that people should be drawn to the food rather than the frills of a restaurant.
