The Zulu Lounge offers an extensive breakfast menu and the main meals are authentic South African dishes such as 'Gatzby', a filled baguette, and traditional South African sausage. I had the smoked salmon burrito which was really delicious and just under £7 so it was quite expensive. I think the burrito was a safe dish to order so next time I would like to be more adventurous and try their traditional sausage as one of the servers in the shop described the sausage as having a 'unique' flavour. They also serve home baking, hot chocolate and, best of all, fresh muffins which are gorgeous.

I had a 'Gatsby' which was a massive foot long bread roll filled with a really sweet cured ham with avocado and a this sauce which tasted like a cross between yoghurt and mayonnaise. This was served with crisps for about £4.50 which was an okay deal considering it was quite a lot of food. The roll tasted unusual but it was new, interesting and filling. The Zulu Lounge is a great alternative to the usual greasy spoons and certainly worth a visit for a culinary trip on the wild side!

I get a box of vegetables dropped off at my front door every Thursday lunch time - completely stress free experience. Of course, the thing about organic box schemes is the element of surprise involved. You don't know what you're going to get in your box from week to week. It depends on whatever is in season and what is available from local suppliers. Some might find me a little strange, but I feel it's a little like Christmas every week when I open my front door with anticipation over what goodies I'm going to find in my box that week. It really does open your eyes to the the numerous different types of vegetables that are actually out there! Whoever said that being a vegetarian must be 'boring' (how wrong could you possibly bewhoever says this clearly doesn't know anything about the number of different types of veg out there)? I'm quite 'up' on my vegetables, but even I'm surprised when I get odd random stick looking things (salsify), mazuna, yellow courgettes and the most weird and wonderful looking vegetables known to man! Things that I've never ever seen in a supermarket before. It opens up a whole new world of cooking tooyou see what you've got in your box, Google the vegetables and see what random selection of recipe suggestions come up including the items that you have. If there's anything that you particularly don't like or don't want to receive in your box, you can just give Grow Wild a call and they'll tailor make your vegetable box to suit your requirements. I love carrotsbut was finding that I was getting so many of them week to week, that I was running out of inspiration and didn't know what to do with them all. No problemjust called Grow Wild and they arranged to just include carrots just every second week instead. If I've had any issues with the vegetables not being quite up to quality when I've received them, I've called them and they've included extra vegetables the following week, or given me a discount off my box that week as compensation. The boxes come in a range of sizes to suit different households, and include vegetable boxes, fruit boxes and mediterranean boxes, for example. Grow Wild can also supply dairy products, meat products, store cupboard items, eco-friendly cleaning products and toiletries, and much more. If you'd like to add any of these items to your weekly delivery, or include them as a one-off, they're happy to help. Grow Wild really are a great company to deal with. I love eating healthily, and the organic box scheme ensures that I'm able to live up to this aim incredibly simply. It's a small spot, so it can get crowded quickly. I still had some of my travel bags with me so it got a little hard to maneuver. But if you're in and out it shouldn't be much of an issue. Otherwise, it's a must visit if you're in need of some plant-based and vegan goods!

While the wines are nice, and the liquor adequate, the beer selection is a highlight. Scotland is an emerging craft beer capital, and you'll find some of the best in bottles at Beets. Beers are available in singles or in six packs for a select few brands. I'm a fan of Scottish breweries, such as Innis & Gunn and Brewdog, all of which are represented here. It's not just ales that they carry either, as you'll find plenty of Belgian style wild beers, ciders, and lagers from the continent. The American beers available are also of a respectable variety, including Boulevard's single wide IPA. During my first trip to Beets I was able to score two Innis & Gunn beers, a whiskey cask cider, a Wild Beer Co. Somerset Wild, and a specialty cola. The price tag for all five items was £12 and some pence. While not the cheapest, you won't find most of these beers at the local Sainsbury's, and it's definitely cheaper than nearby pubs. If I lived in Edinburgh, Beets would be a regular stop to grab some of my favourite brews.

During exam period the shop stocks up on energy drinks, which I found myself helplessly becoming addicted to; and it was pretty cool that they reduced the cost of Relentless during the exam period to £1. The shop is a real convenience for students who cannot be bothered to venture out of the confines of Pollock Halls and even offers stationary and blocks of lined paper. They also sold fruit, which I don't imagine sold very well seeing as most people stole several pieces of fruit from the JMC canteen!

Located on the corner of Warrender Park Road and Marchmont Road, just 30 seconds off the south end of Jawbone Walk, Peter Green's has the most amazing and delicious range of wines and beers ever. One wine that has had my heart stolen for a while, is Cairn O'Mohr (care no more, get it? I'm not actually sure whether it's a play on words or not, but I'd like to think it is). This wine's made on the Black Isle (waaaaaay north in Scotland). And it's made out of delicious things like elderberries and elderflower and autumn and spring oak leaf! And it tends to confuse people, as they mostly don't think Scotland could ever produce anything wine-like. And the people who work at Peter Green's are the epitome of lovely. The main man is Michael, though I spent years thinking he was Peter Green. The Peter Green. I think, in my head, he still kind of is. If you fancy giving someone something fanciful, then go there. If you want to give yourself something fanciful, go there. Or, just go there.

Although not much of a wino myself, I do like a tipple now and then and when I used to live in Marchmont I'd come here quite frequently. I know it's a bit pricier than Scotmid, but you get a much better wine normally, and I'd prefer to give my money to these kind of shops anyway. Walking inside is like stepping back to a Dickensian era store, with bottles piled from floor to ceiling like a boozehound's heaven. I immediately had no idea what wine to get, being bewildered by the choice, so had a bit of a chat with the owner who was more than happy to steer me in the right direction. I ended up very happy with my selection and after polishing it off later, even happier. This is a really good shop, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good bottle of wine. It's slightly more expensive than the supermarkets but a much nicer experience, both in the shop and at home sampling your purchases
