Stunning property. Nature and high-society beach life perfectly blended. Comfortable rooms well…read moreappointed made it feel like home. The restaurants on site hit the spot. The gym and spa facilities were modern and vast. The library was an unexpected great spot to chill.

We stayed here two years ago and had such a wonderful time that we extended our stay. We came back…read moreand stayed at the beach club. Given the huge price we certainly expected a much better experience than we got. Here's what happened: *. The washer and dryer made our clothes stink. I'm not sure what the point in having laundry service is if thats going to happen * The room had several lights without working bulbs, the furniture had stains on it, and a big chunk of tile that was missing under an ottoman (see photo). I would have expected them to fix this. * We had a large balcony overlooking the pools and the beach. One afternoon several random workers were walking around the balcony cleaning with hoses. Since the doors were unlocked and the curtains were open we would have appreciated a heads-up but didn't get any warning. (See photo) * Every day when we showered it literally took 7 minutes for the water to heat up enough to take a shower * My wife got shrimp tacos at southern tide and there were only 2 small shrimp per taco, which seemed a little chincy for a $50 lunch * Good luck trying to figure out how to use the phones in the room, although I suppose it doesn't matter since when we called the front desk we were left on hold * The hot tub in the fitness center didn't work on one of the days * I'm not sure what they were pumping out near the front door to the entrance of the beach club on the last couple of days of our trip (see photos) but it sure smelled like raw sewage. We certainly weren't expecting that and it definitely took away from our enjoyment * They didn't have the right size coffee filters for the coffee maker (obviously, by itself the coffee grounds in our morning coffee weren't enough to complain about, but taken with everything else it was emblematic of the entire stay) * When we went to the front desk to get our final bill the employee didn't ask about our stay. I suppose she already knew we weren't nearly as excited about the property as we were the last time but it would have been nice to have been asked. We paid five star money to stay at the Cloister but do not believe the "value" of what we got was even remotely close to what we paid for, certainly not what we reasonably expected. At these prices it's fair to expect a great experience, but we didn't get one If we ever stay here again it won't be at the beach club. And, I'll never extend another stay here.

Really disappointed with the mansion…read more This place was once the epitome of low country luxury with fantastic grounds and an opulent home; however, since the property has been under the ownership and control of the State of Georgia, the location has fallen into disrepair. Such a shame given the property's potential. The ceilings are caving in and leak whenever it rains. Half of the bathrooms are unusable. The food is fine, nothing great. The breakfast is cold with no option of warm food. Lunch is sandwiches and basic store bought salad. The dinner is very standard. Nothing remarkable. There are no snacks between meals, so bring snacks if you like to eat. The staff, while very kind, are not incentivized to provide an excellent stay and are remarkably ignorant about the local flora and fauna, which is surprising given the University of Georgia's satellite campus located less than 1/4 mile away. A child asked our "guide" if pelicans come to island, to which our guide said, "Nope, never." So when we biked to the beach (1 mile away) and saw hundreds of pelicans, our child was surprised. Our "guide" also was more concerned about getting his cash payment before going out to fish than he was about getting the poles rigged up and accommodating the older and younger members of our group. When trying to plan around weather, our "guide" said we'd have to pay twice if we tried on Day 1 and it got rained on, he was force us to give him the fishing poles back and then if we wanted to try to fish again on Day 2, then we'd have to pay again. For a purported "family friendly" and "educational" property surrounded by water, one would expect basic gear and educated resources be available at the location and not be difficult to access. I can't tell you how disappointing this place is. It has the potential to be an incredible place to learn, relax, and adventure but the ineptitude of government leadership and stewardship of taxpayer money has resulted in an overall sad excuse of a property. The taxpayers of Georgia who pay for the upkeep of this property must demand better, and if the government officials say "our hands are tied", then sell the property to a group who can actually take care of it and restore it.

Very receptive to non-owners reserving on very short notice. Welcoming, friendly, and communicated…read morewell when they found out we would be late and needed additional directions. The place is wonderful. Comfortable, great views, amenities. It was off-season (we like fewer crowds) so not a lot going on, just peaceful and quiet. Staff has gone way above and beyond to help rectify an error on our part. I could not be more thankful!

After staying here almost every year for the past 15 years, my family has enjoyed many great…read morememories. However, the condos are now more run-down, and there are a couple problems that should be addressed. First, the fact that smoking is still permitted on the balconies is ridiculous. Secondhand smoke, as we all know, is toxic and immediately harmful. The beach view is the key feature to this place, and everyone should be able to sit on the patio to enjoy it without the smell of cigarette smoke. This year I brought a floor fan to put on the patio with me, but it did not prevent the smell of smoke. There is no safe level of breathing secondhand smoke whether you are indoors or out. Smoking needs banned on the patios. The second issue is with the mildew smell of the air vents. The first two days this week, all I could smell is fresh laundry. Apparently, there are dryer sheets on the air filters, which is loaded with toxic chemicals btw. However, the rest of the week, it smelled strongly of mildew every time the AC kicked on. That could be a serious issue for those with asthma or mold allergies. Third, the kitchen could definitely use an update, specifically the scratched nonstick cooking pans, which are toxic (you knew that was coming). Those need replaced with new ceramic pans. And one last note - I find it absolutely ironic that I witnessed the maintenance man threatening a lady in the pool that he would call the health department and have her kicked out because she removed the rope that separates deep/shallow ends. Yes, call the health department, please, and ask them about all the issues I listed as well. Folks, overall this is a decent place to stay with perks like the beach view, free coffee, and an easy walk to the pool. However, be aware of the negatives that could potentially harm your well-being. We go on vacation to relax and de-stress, not come home with lung cancer. Seriously.
