I never understood why people want to ever give zero stars until this place. Checking in is absolutely ridiculous. We also booked before looking at the review so don't make our mistake. I'm a sucker for a jacuzzi tub which is why we chose this location. Upon arrival you will see (and smell) the place is older. We booked our jacuzzi room and on the office and on our way down the hall to our room we noticed the "NO PETS allowed sign" while listening to a dog barking in one of the rooms. When we got into our room we first noticed the hole in the bathroom door about fist height and size. You will also notice small circle felt pads stuck to the mirror. (Both in photos). Neither were as concerning as the dried urine all over the toilet seat. We called the front office right away and no one answered so we then walked back down there and someone did come down right away and clean it off and apologized. Some shelves and a rolling desk chair have been update but the old carpet remains. I included a video of the wobbly, leaking jacuzzi tub faucet, (which is why we booked the room remember). We had to put towels on the floor to stop the river running down the side of the tub onto the floor. The water smelled of strong chlorine which was a little comforting after the tub filled up and it was not our small hairs floating in the pea green/brownish water. We left and returned after dark and even though the sign on the glass door in front says "this is an Exit only..." we tried to go back in the hotel through the office like how we checked in, but were very sternly told we had to go back outside and go through that door because the door going from the office to the hallway of rooms was locked. This made me question my own safety if the office person felt they needed to have a locked door between them and us? The moral of my stay is: Dont do it. You don't need a jacuzzi tub that bad. read more

We made a blind reservation to stay here on our way to Canada. On our drive into Ames, we noticed many very nice hotels. When we arrived at this Days Inn, we couldn't tell if it was abandoned or actually open. It looked like a dump aka flop house. My wife and I are well beyond AARP age and didn't feel safe staying there and did not even go inside the lobby. There were weeds around the perimeter of the place and the parking lot had maybe one other car. We immediately made another reservation at one of the many nearby I35 locations. When I called Days Inn later, they told me I was beyond the 24-hour cancellation time, and no refund was allowed. When I pursued online customer service complaints about the reason why we didn't even bother to get out to look at the place I was told via email it was "our fault" for seeing how marvelous the interior actually was. Typical company gaslighting. So--we donated a night's payment and stayed somewhere else much nicer. We were probably one of a very few numbers of "customers" that night. read more

The good: Its cheap and within walking distance of Main Street and a lot of restaurants and stores. The bad: I've been staying here since 2013. The past year or so, it has quickly declined. This is evident before you enter. Weeds have taken over the outside. They need removed but haven't been. The interior is really starting to show it's age. Carpeting is worn, stairs are worn and the towels are getting thin. The mini fridges are barely cold and the AC is spotty. Some days it works, some days not so much. We resorted to buying a fan to get air moving in our room. I used to love staying here, the location is great. Staying in this place was the worst mistake ever. To begin with the restroom was not properly cleaned and we had to flush the toilet before using it, seems like the previous guest forgot to do it. Then the blankets were dirty just like I just saw at another review. The attendants are not wearing a mask as they are supposed to do it. ( a woman) extremely rude. I asked to use the laundry room she did not let me because it was 7:30 and they closed at 8:00 pm. No sense! And she said the other guests would get mad because she does not let them use it. It did not matter the fact that I explained We are traveling with an infant, we are leaving tomorrow morning (she suggested to wash in the morning), we need to take the bus for the university visit scheduled for my daughter, and we are heading back to California in train ( nothing matters, she refused to let me use the laundry room). Well I truly wish I could leave right now but again we travel with an infant, luggage, public transportation is not exactly the more efficient here, and it is super cold to walk to the nearby hotel. We booked two rooms, requested adjacent rooms. The hotel required us to call wyndham hotels because days inn could not handle request. When we got there, both rooms were missing smoke detectors, one room was missing a ceiling tile, the toilet gasket was leaking at the floor, not a good smell in the room and the bedspread was soiled. When we contacted Wyndham, the days Inn general manager replied with an email stating neither room was missing a ceiling tile even though I have photos. They claimed the smoke detectors were in the drawers and he had no clue who removed them, claiming that housekeeping would've noticed that before I checked in. So basically, he covered his butt with the wyndham franchise by lying to me and wyndham. Dont go there, even though for some reason, my nightly stay was double the price as what's posted online now. Total ripoff artists. I will be contacting the ames health inspector and fire marshall to knock on their door. read more

This place is a dump! We booked it on Travelocity's app. Everything appeared to be ok, but it really wasn't. We couldn't walk away from the reservation because it was nearly midnight during a severe winter storm on the Iowa State University Fall graduation weekend. There were no other rooms available. The room had graffiti on the wall, the bathroom door was broken and the bedspread had paint on it and looked like it was used as a drop cloth. The bathroom had not been throughly cleaned. The whole room was grungy and nasty. We reported it at check out but there wasn't any member of management available to assist. We left our contact information but didn't get any response. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE! Our family was in Ames to attend a funeral. We reserved 4 rooms. Each room had issues with cleanliness (ie, dried feces on bathroom floor, blood on side of bathtub, stains on bedding, used toothbrush left on bathroom rack, filthy shower heads.) After staying here one night, my wife and I discovered we had BED BUG bites all over us. I later found a bed bug in my suitcase. I posted pictures of my bug bites as well as my suitcase. I ended up just throwing my suitcase away. In talking with the hotel owner, he is in complete denial of the situation and totally uncooperative. Ahhhh, the Days Inn, Room 226, the Pubic Suite. Stayed here with some friends for the Iowa v. Iowa State game (GO CYCLONES...and we won). The room, well, it was certainly a room. I guess on the positive side, the beds were comfortable and there was a mini fridge. Now let's move on to the negative. 1) The air conditioner; it worked really well. That's not the bad part, when we woke up on Sunday Morning we noticed that the entire floor was flooded from the Air Conditioner leaking all over the place. And that was just on the "Cool" setting. Maybe had we gone to Super Cool we could have saved ourselves the mess and got icicles. Live and learn, I guess. 2) Though the room was confirmed for Friday night and Saturday night, the hotel manager charged us for Sunday night as well, and would not budge. Pretty annoying, really. I mean, as much as I would have loved to stay in Ames on a Sunday, I just couldn't afford to miss work....in Chicago....on Monday morning....which is why it made so much sense for us to plan to stay on Sunday night....darn those rascally building managers. 3) Mold....the shower's curtain wasn't really a curtain anymore, it was a sheet of mold, disgusting mold....not much else I can say about that nastiness. 4) The reason for the name the "Pubic Suite." Well, the first night we were there we noticed that there were a few "adult hairs" if you will, on the toilet seat. Naturally, everyone blamed each other and made fun of each other, and it actually made for quite the night of laughs. The next day, we go to the game, ISU wins, we come back to the room and see that room service had come in and cleaned everything up...WONDERFUL! I had to use the facilities when we got back after all of the fun at the game...and what should I see before me, sitting upon the porcelain throne? None other than a long black curly "adult hair." I'm not sure what goes on in that hotel, if room service employees just do their pluckings one at a time in each room, or if there's some sort of a pube ghost that lives in 226 that leaves his mark every day. Either way, this place gets 1 star for being in existence, however I would leave it just a c*nt hair short of two stars, though I have no choice but to give the full star. I would stay there again, simply because it's so damn hard to get a hotel near Ames for the Iowa v Iowa State weekend. read more

Stayed here for a soccer tourney. Decent place to crash, but thats about it. Small rooms, TV signal didnt work sometimes, decent cleanliness, could be better. Target, Walmart, Paneras, and many restaurants right near by. Literally a mexican place practically in the parking lot... I was tempted to try (maybe next time). There was a wedding party near us, which is extremely loud all night and didnt sleep much. Would I stay here again.... probably if I needed a place to crash, but may look at some other options. Overall, The Days Inn in Ames is a run down hotel. The bedding was dirty. The comforter and linens had lipstick, grime, and blood stains. The shower was dirty and you only get one bar of soap. Even though the hotel claims to be smoke-free, our room reeked of smoke. The hotel staff tried to cover the smell with a car air freshener. Thankfully, we brought a box fan so we were able to clear out the smell by opening a window and placing the fan on the sill. There was no plate in the microwave, so we couldn't heat anything up. Also, their entry key cards would not work on the outside card reader. The only positives I have about this place are that the mattresses were comfy, there was coffee available in the rooms, there was a fridge, and the floors weren't sticky. I have spent a lot of time on the road, in hotels. Last night at Days Inn Ames was my worst experience ever at a hotel. I pulled back the sheets to find urine stains and hair. These beds had been made by housekeeping... There was candy and crumbs on the floor, an empty Dr. Pepper bottle between bed and nightstand. OK, so maybe it was a disgruntled housekeeper's last day? Or someone's child was helping them? Benefit of the doubt. I go to the front desk and the clerk doesn't apologize, and asks me "are you sure?", like he doesn't believe me. "I'll have to go check it." That's what really sealed it, dude just didn't care. It's midnight and 12 degrees, so I get another room. (4 doors down from the original, not inspiring much confidence.) Hopefully, if the sheets aren't clean, at least there's less urine on these. And the piece de resistance? Only decaf coffee when I go to make it the next morning. read more

If I could give half stars I would go 2.5 The hotel is close to the Veterinary center and I stayed here while my dog had emergency surgery. For the $70 a night I expected a little better than what I got but over all the place was okay. Location is right by shopping, food etc all within walking distance and a Mexican restaurant right next door. A six minute ride from the Veterinary center. The beds are firm and the AC just okay. Room felt plenty spacious enough, mine had two beds in it. Room shows some wear but everything seemed clean enough. Room came with a mini fridge and microwave so that was a plus if I had needed it. The thing that needs improvement is the pillows. Small crappy pillows, all 6 of them in my room. I would rather nix the fridge and microwave for some better pillows. Upstairs hallway smells strongly of smoke though they are all nonsmoking rooms. That seemed a little odd but thankfully my room did not smell of it. The AC when running smelled a little musty but nothing you cannot live with, nothing overly unpleasant. Walls and doors seem a little thin but not too bad noise wise. Maybe it was just quiet neighbors. Breakfast was a little disappointing since they market it as a "hot" breakfast. Just a toaster with varying things to toast, hot oatmeal and biscuits and gravy. The standard bits of fruit and cereal were also present. Not bad, but I was expecting again a little more for the price point, but not much. Outside of a major city I would have expected the room as it is to run for $55 a night not $70. Could use some improvements but over all not bad and the staff I encountered was friendly. read more

I booked a room for Iowa St. graduation weekend. First, the room was not the one I had booked and was given a different room (I ordered 2 double beds and got a king instead) and they refused to accommodate my request. Asked for a roll away bed since I now need it and then proceeded to tack on a fee for that after I had already paid and left the hotel (rate was added on 2 days after the stay). Had to ask for cups for the room and didn't get any breakfast in the morning at all- no food was left. I was down to the breakfast area around 8am. For the totally outrageous rate I paid, this was unacceptable. I called to ask them to take the roll away bed off the bill since they had given me the wrong room in the first place and the woman on the phone wouldn't give in, she told me to call back in a week. I found a good rate for this hotel online, and then called the hotel directly and was told I could get the same price by booking with them, so I made my reservation via the phone right there. Well, when we showed up at the hotel a month later, I was charged more than I was quoted and was told by the front desk attendant that there was nothing he could do to change it, but that he'd let the owner know what had happened. I called several times (before our stay to confirm our reservation and after to ask for a reimbursement) and the phone was OFTEN not answered - didn't matter what time of day it was. When I finally was able to speak with the owner he said that he'd talk to the person that took my reservation and get back to me the next day. After getting no return call, I called back 3 days later and he said that basically there was nothing he could do for me. So, I just said that I wanted to give him the chance to correct the situation before I filled out the online survey that Days Inn corporate sent me. He paused for a few seconds, asked me how much I was asking to be reimbursed, and then told me he'd send me a check for the difference. Without the "threat" of filling out the survey, he would not have stepped up to the plate to rectify the situation. Oh, and did I mention that the last time I called, the owner asked me to hold on so he could answer his cell phone, and then he proceeded to have a personal phone conversation in his native language without putting me on hold? His customer service skills were horrendous. In regards to the rooms - we checked in and got a room upstairs that smelled like smoke even though the room was designated non-smoking. We asked for another room and got one downstairs and that was better. The hotel served our purpose of a bed to sleep in for one night and a basic breakfast before we headed out the next morning. However, we would not stay there again... the owner's customer service and lack of integrity will keep us away. read more

Only good thing to say about this motel is that it's close to shopping. So unclean and shabby didn't want to sit on sofa or have anything touch the floor. Washed all clothes after visiting there as soon as arrived home. Unfriendly staff, plus they'd already charged my room on my card and were disgusted when I gave them a different card when I checked in. Had to go out & buy my own soap as room only had one small soap for 2 people to use. Not enough towels, either. Bathroom very small & couldn't leave light on to see during the night since a noisy fan connected to the light switch. Breakfast was decent but the room to eat was like a closet yet there were signs posted asking you not to take breakfast to your room. This hotel is an absolute dive. We chose to book because our son's team was also staying at the hotel. The hallways and rooms reeked of smoke and were quite rundown. The cleaning job is only cursory as the floors were dirty and there were items left in the fridge. The free breakfast consisted of biscuits and gravy...yuck! We found out that several players had bed bug bites so we left without spending the night. When our room got checked for bed bugs the maid said that "I made this bed and I didn't see any bugs today." WTF! It was also reported that several players had money stolen from their wallets that were left in the rooms. The manager was completely useless in trying to assist with this issue. The front desk staff were nice but the other workers who sat around the hotel entrance were strange. As others have reported, they wrote down people's credit card numbers which is not exactly a safe way to conduct business. I would never stay at this hotel. I called this facility at approxiamtely 16:00 on Friday June 3rd to cancel a one night reservation for June 11th. I took the employee at their word that the reservation was cancelled. I asked for a name and wrote it down. On Monday June 13th, this hotel fraudently charged my credit card. When I called to request a refund, I was told they would not give me one. I asked the manager to confirm this with his employee who was working at that date and time and he refused. I asked for the name of his superior or to speak to him and they refused as well. I also asked if they would simply apply those funds to my upcoming reservatin at the same facility for Friday the 17th, which was also refused. The manager was rude and uncooperative. I called the Days Inn main number to open a case and was told it would take up to 3 business days to resolve.
