Day For Night was Houston's first immersive light and sound festival, and the organizers did a fantastic job planning and executing its inaugural year in 2015. Yes, daily and weekend passes were far more pricy than FSP and other summer and fall music fests, but as opposed to FPSF, which I've gone almost every year since its inception in 2009, Day For Night wasn't in the thick of 100-degree weather; there weren't droves of people shuffling from stage to stage like cattle; and the demographic wasn't your typical mobs of wasted 20-something-year olds. With clear skies and the beautiful Downtown Houston skyline as its backdrop, Day For Night took place on John Deal Co's Spring and Silver Street properties. The main stage area was carpeted - yes, instead of standing on cement or grass, there was carpet. Many took it upon themselves to sit, lay and enjoy the show as if they were watching it from their own living room. Food vendors were top notch, I mean, my group and I were able to get burgers from Underbelly. There were many food trucks on hand as well, complimentary water stations ... but of course, we were all there for the music and light installations. Favorite performance of the 2-day festival was without a doubt NEW ORDER. I took my oldest sis to the show because I have the fondest memories dancing to New Order's hits in her bright pink bedroom. I think I was in kindergarten... They did an outstanding performance and I will never forget that moment. :) Other performers included Sunday night's headliner Kendrick Lamar (bomb ass), Dillon Francis and Dan Deacon. I didn't get a chance to see Philip Glass Ensemble on Saturday, but I saw plenty of clips from my fanboy friends. Now I don't know much about light instillation artists, other than some local and international works of James Turrell, but the art brought in was though provoking ... if not visually stimulating. There were a TON of people using the pieces as the perfect Instagram photo opp, so if you didn't attend, you probably saw posts all over your feed. Looking forward to its return in 2016. read more

Scored free tix with Yelp! Largely a college & 20's-early 30's crowd. Don't bring kids! Lots of people smoking vaporizers...among others... There were three main stages. The largest was an outdoors concert venue with a spectacular view of Houston downtown. Lots of DJ'ing, interpretive music, and screamo. Many art installations were tucked in little nooks and corners of the warehouse building. There were a few larger displays, some which you had to wait in line for. Light displays were accompanied by other worldly epic music. I think the experience would be "mind-blowing" if you were drunk...and high... There weren't many maps and much direction/staff around...but as it was a relatively small place, it was fun to explore the uncharted lands. Plenty of food trucks, porta potty's, and drink stands around. Some long lines for the trucks though. The website advertised free water refills for those who brought their own Camelbaks/waterbottles, but I've heard people couldn't find the water? For parking, with some searching and a bit of walking, you can find free street parking. I wouldn't pay $20 parking. I feel the almost $200 price for a two-day pass was way too much for people to buy blindly for a first time festival. ~$100/day is also really expensive (esp for college kids). I think a lot of people were given free tickets one way or another... It wasn't even unlimited entry. You could only enter twice a day, so beware. Programming was smart in putting Kendrick Lamar at the very end of the festival to retain people to stay 'til then. They had some really big headline acts, so I'd probably only attend for those music acts....but definitely not just for the lights. read more

This was a great 2-day art and music festival with alot of everything a young person could want. Lots of dj's, bands, art installations, food trucks, port a pottys, beautiful people. Brought to you by the same people as FPSF. Don't be stupid and pay for the $40 or even the $20 parking, just take 5 more minutes to drive around and find free street parking. read more

Went without VIP for 2017 and had a great time. They did not use the building's bathrooms this time so the place didn't stink this year. Sound was excellent everywhere; sound quality was a huge problem in 2016. The schedule made a lot more sense too, I was able to catch pretty much everything I wanted to. Biggest complaint I had this year was Thom Yorke playing on the small stage after midnight. I didn't stick around for that, I heard it was difficult to get a good spot. read more

Poor organization. Security pushy but not helpful. Bathrooms hard to find. Limited reentrance for unlimited tickets--clearly a plan to force patrons to pay for overpriced food and drinks. Spoke to one of the organizers. Asked why the event opened late, he said "we open when we open." I asked the organizer why Sunday opened late. He said equipment was being moved around. That is 100% fair. I asked why no info was given to the crowd. Je reiterated "we open when we open." I will never return. I will urge friends not to come. read more

The VIP ticket was a total scam. Killer Mike did not host the Friday Night Party and there were no artist meet and greets and no speaking panels. There was no exclusive front of stage viewing area; instead, the VIP areas were way off to the side of the main stages or in the back. The blue stage was supposed to have a VIP area but it was totally nonexistent. There were not enough bathrooms and the venue smelled like raw sewage. A small indoor VIP area had a 49 person max to get to the area for drinks, and Day For Night said it was "due to the Oakland Fire". Meanwhile, THE ENTIRE INDOOR AREA OF THE FESTIVAL was a bottlenecked firetrap where if people needed to exit quickly for whatever reason, they couldn't. It was dark and smoky with fog on both levels. I was heartbroken to hear about people waiting for 9 hours one day to see the Bjork art installation, only to be refused and to have to try again the next day. They spent most of the festival missing acts and waiting on line. I complained about art access and met one of the promoters, Dutch Small, and one of the producers, Omar. I gave Dutch some feedback for what they could do better for next year, and how so many things we purchased did not even exist. I turned to Omar and exclaimed that it's not ok to be ghosting people and not letting them know that events simply were not happening (artist meet and greets and speaking panels, for instance), and he just looked at me with a blank face and walked away. The VIP line to get into the festival on some days took longer than the general admission lines. We saw two artists with clearly marked "artist" wristbands told to go to the back of the VIP line by security, who could have taken a moment and cleared them right away if they wanted to--the artists explained that they were going to miss their soundcheck because the line was extremely long. We heard the artists exclaiming what BS it was and how the organizers of the festival had no idea what they were doing. Security seemed to have no idea what the organizers were up to, and just shrugged when we asked them why there were no VIP center stage access areas as promised. One security person told me, "it would have cost them more money." We did not get a swag bag. Instead at the last minute there was word going around that it would be mailed to us, but we have not received anything at all or any word about it from Day For Night. In fact, they have ghosted the VIP and other ticketholders' complaints. We recieved one general email recently sent to all VIP ticket holders saying that next year we could go for half price. All requests for refunds have been ignored. We simply did not receive the goods and services that we paid a lot extra for--having a coupon for next year to say sorry is not adequate or acceptable. They have removed the reviews section of their facebook page due to overwhelmingly poor reviews. Their actions continue to get more shady as time goes on, acting like ostriches with their head in the sand. It's important for the Day For Night people to professionally handle the shortcomings of the 2016 festival and to appropriately compensate those who trusted them to provide what was promised, but never came to be. In this way, they can work to restore faith in them and the festival which has great potential. read more

I went to Day for Night in 2015 and had a rad time and after seeing Björk Digital on the 2016 line up I knew I HAD to go. I'm so glad I won my ticket because I would have been devastated if I paid money for DFN 2016. They festival lacked communication between all staff, no one ever had the same answers for anything. One would think after a successful fest in 2015, that they would have been a bit more put together, guess not. I never received anything about the reservations for the Björk installation until it was sold out...I just don't understand how a festival headlines on Björk Digital, the sole reason I was going, and then after people pay for their passes they have to reserve their spot? If this was the case, they should not have had the installation at the festival at all. I got to the festival at 11:30am day 2 (doors opened at 2pm) and waited till they opened doors, then proceeded to wait a total of 6 hours in line until I was able to see Björk's installation. I missed most of the festival, for a headlining installation. What I also cant get over is how much DFN screwed over VIP pass holders...they were promised so much and received shit treatment and broken promises. Honestly, this has left a bad taste in my mouth and I would probably never attend another DFN fest (unless someone like Daft Punk headlined, but that would never happen). read more

Coolest festival experience in USA- every year it evolves to generate an atmosphere that only exists for one weekend. It's not a Cookie cutter vanilla butt chug festival with VIP air conditioned tents and it's not about instagram likes. It's an organic and raw temporal earthquake that might get dirty and make you a little uncomfortable- but you're going to walk away having felt like people felt before the internet existed. Obviously there will be problems when you don't host a festival in a unique location that's not built for music festivals- but unlike the parking lot of NRG stadium- the locations add character to the bring the environment to life. Who cares that the bathrooms aren't ideal when you have Aphex Twin conjuring an electric doom wind storm and NoNotak burning your retinas to a crisp. read more

Literally this lady named Lauren ensured we'd see Björk in the line we were in, literally made this whole festival worth it.

I'm only giving this 3 stars because the artists were all entertaining and talented. The festival as a whole though was quite disappointing. I purchased the VIP tickets for the sole purpose of "artist meet and greets", "artist speaking panels", and "front of stage viewing areas at main stages." I received NONE of this. Also promised was a "swag bag", "light bites throughout the festival", and a "cocktail happy hour." Again, I received NONE of the above. We had to wait in ridiculous lines at the beer tents for water and the bathrooms were a Petri dish of organisms. No soap, sinks wouldn't drain, sewage on the floors, and numerous out of order stalls. I wasn't expecting a red carpet and angels singing upon my arrival. However, I FULLY expected to get what I paid for, which was over $1500. The only difference I could tell between VIP and general admission was the access to the lame "VIP lounge" that had a bottom floor of hammocks and a top floor with bean bag chairs. But they were always "at capacity" with "a 40 minute wait" to get upstairs. read more

This is a unique festival. Different from any other ones you may have attended. It is about music AND art - don't like one? Don't go. Eclectic line up - something for everyone and if you don't know all the bands? Good! You will experience something new! Want the same line up of music that all the other festivals have? Go to them instead. I don't know which is better - the art or the music but I'm happy to enjoy both. I read about pushy security, bad bathrooms, high prices, poor organization, etc. etc - I'm 62 years old and let me tell you - after going to a hundred festivals this one is so chill, great organization, cool security, did I mention VERY well organized and yes, porta cans! The Horror! Stay at home if you need someone to lead you around by the hand, give you free drinks and wipe your.... I'm an old man and this festival is so easy - If I can make it can't some of you guys 30 years younger than me? I love the crowd - everyone was friendly, smiling and having a good time yet NO drunk frat boys! This festival is just too cool to attract the loud, obnoxious losers that frequent some other festivals. I was here last year and I'll be here next year - I consider this the premier festival in Texas. read more
