    The Mall Blackburn Shopping Centre

    The Mall Blackburn Shopping Centre

The mall its-self is a decent size, it mainly seems to be all over one floor, but from the standard street level where Morrisons and the Markets are, you do need to go up a lift or escalator to get in and walking in that way wasn't really nice, it just felt bare walking through that coridoor which was cold, it wasn't very nice until you entered the main bit which was better. In a way, it felt cramped together how they had the shops and in some parts much of them were quite small including Argos, however their was a much more modern part with slightly nicer, newer and bigger stores such as Muffin Break, Next and Ryman. They didn't seem to be a large amount of staff or information points around to get assistance, so it was a bit of a free for all in a way, perhaps adding maps would have been easier to help find certain shops, I did struggle to find the Post Office at first mainly because it was situated right at the front enterance, hidden away in the newsagents away from everything else to the point where I wouldn't even count it as part of Blackburn's The Mall. The Mall actually comes from a chain of 6 branches around the UK, mainly in the South of England with other locations such as Luton. They did have an information counter which I went onto find, which is quite cool in the fact it is also a Collect Plus point, which is a key provider in returns from a large amount of companies, which includes Amazon in addition to the Post Office, which has a location here and Amazon Lockers, which are based in Morrisons just across the way. I didnt use parking here so can't comment on that, i would instead recommend parking across the way and not in either Morrisons or the main parking which is free for Blue Badge holders. Overall, this is a nice mall with some nice shops and well-known chains surrounding it, combining some of the biggest companies in WHSmith and Mcdonald's, and the smallest such as Rhode Island Coffee and Muffin Break so it has done enough to at least earn a slightly generous three star rating.

And that's just what Broads and Booths is. Plus it holds great nostalgia for me, a pair of my friends used to busk outside it when I was working as a chambermaid at Squire's. We'd spend the morning making moolah and count our cash in hand earnings to spend at Aqua in the afternoon after lunch. Ah, those weekends. The irresponsibility of youth. Part of the Beales group, Broads has survived for eons in its convenient location and sells everything you could need, from fashion accessories for men and women to clothes, soft furnishings to gifts, fine fragrances and cosmetics, there's a cookshop and a bed and bathshop and a restaurant and café for when your legs refuse to carry you any longer. You can even order all your lovely things online too. It's kind of like the Southport equivalent of Harrods or Lewis's, obviously on a much smaller and simpler scale but that's how much it's shaped the Southport landscape. Definitely worth a browse.

Several of the shops are meant to be discounted and some do seem to have sale prices a lot of the time but I wouldn't really describe it as chock full of bargains by any means. There's a food court which overlooks a pretty marina with its assortment of yachts and boats. A MacDonalds on the outskirts and a Costa Coffee within the village itself add to the eating and drinking possibilities. I'd describe it as a nice place to visit for a morning or afternoon out if you're in the area but you may be disappointed if you travel many miles to shop here as it doesn't compare to serious shopping venues such as the Trafford Centre and in all honesty I don't think it would make any claim to.

It's got the essential M&S and Next Clearance though, so I was happy enough! The play area is a massive bonus for those of us with men and kids: one place to dump them both for a couple of hours of shopping in peace! It's not the best in the world but it is perfectly adequate and if it's somewhere you don't visit often then there would be plenty to keep the kids amused. I liked the fact that at the end there's a sort-of marina, so you can watch the boats (ok, I only did it for about 2 minutes then got bored and went to buy chocolate in Thorntons instead, but I liked the idea of it). Definitely worth a visit if you're having a good old British holiday in Blackpool and want a bit of civilized retail therapy.

The layout of the mall is easy to follow, many of the stores are in the exterior part of the mall, with TK Maxx taking up the whole of the top floor. They do close at 6 pm Monday to Saturday, and at 4:30 pm on Sundays, so do plan ahead if planning to visit in the afternoon. The building the mall is housed in is actually reasonably grand and impressive from the exterior, but in terms of the interior, it's nothing too impressive or easy on the eye in the main retail area. 3* - They have some good brands here, but the selection is small in general, it's a shame the stores that are located in the outside area of the mall don't have better protection from the elements and do close at the same time as the indoor part with no good reason.

Other shops in the centre include, La Senza, Julian Graves, New Look, WH Smith, H&M, Athena and the wonderful Cornish Pasty Shop. The centre is well laid out, with both escalators and lifts to move between the 4 floors (the top floor is purely TK Maxx, and the bottom floor New Look (and an external entrance to JJB). In all seriousness, The Victoria Quarter is the opulent home to some of the more high end brands of the Leeds shopping arena, and with it comes certain prestige in being housed here. The little independent stores like the French Revolution and Rose & Co gain a little kudos in being located here, as that is the effect the Victoria Quarter has on a business here. It is really rather easy to get lost in the annals of the walkways, be it through gawping at all the lovely shopping enticements, or be it from the identical high vaulted ceilings and archways criss crossing across one another, identical fountains, and sympathetic shop signage so that it doesn't interfer with the original features and feel of the Victorian decor. Depending on which entrance you take you will find fountains tinkling delicately, or small tables with coffee service, or even a small but assuredly delicious pattisserie. Benches are also dotted around and if you take the time to perch, and knock your head back you'll see the bizarre yet beautiful glass decoration. A worthy attraction all on it's own.
