Beautiful gallery, featuring works that range from full-scale pieces to miniatures. Visitors are encouraged to touch and rotate the sculptures, which adds to the experience. + each piece is based on a real person. So impressive. What was less impressive was the gallery attendant. While knowledgeable, she came across as pretentious and judgmental, though maybe she was trying to be nice in her own way(?). I would have preferred she stay focused on the education and stay in that lane. It's not enough to deter me, but it did make me want to leave the gallery. That aside, the art itself -- the surreal interpretation of a body's form is so interesting and well done, and I'd definitely consider purchasing a sculpture in the future. read more

Ahhh the sculpture of Richard Montgomery! An undeniably stunning set of pieces fill this gallery by the great capturer of ballet and other types of movement. His work presents the emotion and drama of that perfect extension of muscle and bone. Nearly all of them are designed to be spun in place, having the hardware built directly into the pedestals. In my half a dozen visits here or so, I'm compelled to move from piece to piece, spinning each and marveling at the way the figures shine from every angle. It's quite amazing. Noting some negative reviews based on rudeness from workers here, I was wary of interactions with the staff. But, we have had nothing but positive vibes from them. They are of course eager to discuss the pieces and talk about Montgomery's process and upcoming work. One time I heard one of the hostesses asking a woman to not take so many pictures, but she did so in a polite way. I have taken a few myself, perhaps I'm more discrete :). But, no one has ever said anything. I can understand why they would not want the artwork to be heavily documented with potentially unflattering photography in such a way that might lessen the impact of seeing it in person. Though, I can hardly imagine that to be the case here as Montgomery's work is truly spectacular and each time I visit there's more to see. This stand-out gallery in the ever charming Carmel-By-the-Sea is one of our must-visit stops whenever we come through here. We have dreamed of having one, for which we would have to save many pennies. Until then, we will have to continue enjoying them in this lovely gallery. Hopefully one day! read more

One of the best galleries I have ever been to. Not only was the artwork phenomenal, the people were so incredibly friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, most galleries (especially in Carmel) have an air of pretentiousness about them that really ruins the visit. This gallery was attentive, friendly and encouraged my children to touch and ask questions. I immediately sent a few other people just based on our experience. I'll definitely be back and hopefully make a purchase. read more

I don't understand the poor reviews here. If you desire the most knowledgeable and pleasant staff ... This is the place to go. The art speaks to you, the staff represent this gallery in fine fashion. My wife and I went In looking at the wonderful sculptures, a young lady approached us and spent allot of time telling us about the artist. She took 3 pieces we were looking at and put them together for us to look at. She was incredibly kind to us. I told her that I wanted to look around and see what else is out there. I returned and purchased the piece my wife had fallen in love with. I will be back to purchase more .. if the staff here were rude or unkind I would have high tailed it out of there. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making the exit of 2017 a most memorable experience. read more

BAD GALLERY!!!! DO NOT ENTER THE GALLERY, JUST LOOK FROM OUTSIDE. A gallery is meant to highlight an artist, and bring the public into its door the appreciate the works, and entice the client for a purchase based on the art and artist. It is unfortunate that the gallery FAILS that purpose because the sculptures by Richard MacDonald are simply astonishing, and the display are very well executed. However, as noted by the two reviews in 2012 and 2013, I encountered the same lady that these two reviewers were complaining about. Her demeanor is ARROGANT, and UNWELCOMING, and PRETENTIOUS. We were actually looking to add a piece to our collection, the gymnast and took a quick picture to remind me of the piece to confirm the limited edition series. She barked in and said "NO PICTURE ARE TO BE TAKEN!!!!" I acknowledged her request and put my phone in my pocket, and proceeded to examine the piece. She stood there in the doorway looking as though I was going to steal the artwork. I looked back at her and confirmed, "yes, I understand about no pictures" and she stood there staring at me for a good 3 minutes as I proceeded to examine the details of the work. Upon leaving the gallery, she didn't even say a thing to acknowledge our departure, although she was right there by the door. To the owner of the Gallery - FIRE HER. if she is the owner, or related to the owner, my message is to Mr. MacDonald, consider pulling out your beautiful work from this gallery. read more

The art they display is very nice. But the lady who worked they was greatly rude, nor nice. She was so rude to all of us. She spoke or his art like it is the greatest thing in the world. Ever heard of Degas? I asked her a question, I guess she wasn't done speaking, she put her hand in my face. No sorry, no I'm still talking, just a hand in my face. The sculptures are gorgeous! Been there twice and love the sculptures and everything is so beautiful until...the lady working there appears. She is BEYOND arrogant, rude, and condescending! Twice she has approached my party and myself being totally rude! The first time she walked up she greeted us with a "NO PICTURES ARE ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN!" I had no idea who she was talking to until I realized her rude tone was directed towards me. I had my phone face down looking up something online...it wasn't even facing anything but the floor...very obvious I wasn't taking a picture. I said I wasn't taking a picture, but looking up something on my phone. Instead of apologizing or being pleasant once again she said "NO PICTURES ARE ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN." I was over it and the whole gallery. I really wanted to take a friend to look at the sculptures so we went in and I didn't see the rude lady there and was relieved. Soon enough...here she comes around the corner saying, "Can I answer any questions about the artist?" I said no, we were just looking. And once again, since she is OBVIOUSLY SOOOO MUCH SMARTER THAN ANYONE says, "Well it's obvious you came in here to look around, that's what the doors are open for. I asked IF I CAN ANSWER ANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS." Her tone and demeanor is so much just saying, "You're not welcomed here, because it's obvious you can't afford anything." My thought for the gallery, get someone with customer service experience to make it an enjoyable and memorable experience. Not someone who just makes you leave your gallery with not thinking about all the beautiful sculptures, but rather with how rude and unwelcoming your worker is. I wish I had more time to look around at the beautiful pieces and not felt like I was to hurry out the door. read more
