The ATX Asian Food Fest 5/29/2022 held at VUKA was fabulous! There was a great turn out. Parking…read morewas a little challenging. You could find a wonderful selection of food & drinks vendors, like Moi Vietnamese grill. Mom & Pops popsicles. Connor's creamery. Garbo's. Ding tea. Citrus refreshments. Weh? Asian fusion. Shoyu Sugar is Hawaiian grill and a favorite amongst visitors. Boba bites and tea, had their very first event and are in the process of opening their shop soon. A business to be continued, as I love their teas! Dash realty was there too with a bean bag toss, giving out balloons and candy. Cutco with their knives. Ten thousand villages had some beautiful fair trade goodies. All vendors had quite a long line. Moi's customers faced a long time in the burning Sun, but Asians love food! Weh? Sold out within 2 hours! The DJ's supplied great vibes inside the VUKA building, which is modern, spacious, air-conditioned, a great place for events. It hosted the space for a Limbo race, and crafting paper fans by 'open eyes beyond border' for the Lil' ones. The event would take place all day, and it is a hot day. A great event! The dragon dance was very much entertaining. People had their dollar bills ready! Oh, how we love to feed the dragon to get luck and prosperity! Yes, yes, Chinese dragons are believed to have control over water, rain, hurricanes and floods. They also represent power, strength and good luck. The Chinese believe that performing the dragon dance during festivals and celebrations drives away evil spirits and ushers in good luck and blessings for the community.

Don't have high expectations coming in here for service or cleanliness, but do come for the great…read moresandwiches and burgers. Also come in knowing what you want to order. This is a no BS kind of place so just come with that in mind. You are on dirty sixth after all. I really enjoyed the Amarillo burger sub the patty for chicken breast. It's spicy and creamy and the bread was super good. This was my second time coming back for it and I hate coming to dirty sixth. Their burger is pretty thick which I don't enjoy but a lot of people do! They also have a few running specials like fried Mac and cheese. Inside is decorated interestingly and they are usually playing a weird movie on the TVs. Definitely a fun weird Austin experience!

DEEPLY UPSETTING EXPERIENCE: Harassment and Lack of Accountability…read more I'm writing this because I'm genuinely shaken by the treatment I received at Casino el Camino last night (Saturday, 4/25, approx. 2:15 AM). While my husband and I were quickly packing our leftovers after closing was announced, we were targeted by a staff member (short male, dreads, full gauged ears). He began aggressively throwing glasses onto our table and followed us down the stairs to intimidate us as we were leaving. As an Asian woman, it was heartbreaking to realize we were the only ones being targeted this way--the bar was still half-full, yet no other patrons were being rushed or hovered over. The situation peaked when the employee looked me in the face and called me a "fucking c--t" in front of my husband and friends. When we asked for help, the manager's "apology" session was a failure; the employee simply started yelling at us again. Instead of de-escalating, the front door staff slammed the door in our faces to hide him. When I asked for the General Manager's name, I was handed a blank business card--a clear attempt to avoid accountability. I gave the card back, as I won't be silenced by a generic brush-off. I am sharing this because a staff member who uses sexist slurs and physically intimidates women is a major liability. I truly hope management takes this seriously and handles this individual's employment appropriately. Check your security footage from 2:00-2:20 AM; it will confirm every word of this.

Walking into Deep Eddy's is like going back in time... an old school dive bar where you can get a…read morecheap drink, play some pool, and spark up a conversation with a stranger at the bar. It's a surprising but unassuming melting pot of Austinites of every stripe that's open 7 days a week, rain or shine, and most (if not all) holidays. No frills. No nonsense. They take happy hour very seriously with their Mon-Thurs 12-1 (??) and 7-8 options. The beer is cold and comes in mugs, mini-pitchers, and pitcher-pitchers -- and all for the cheapest price in Austin. They also have liquor and mixers ...and technically wine (if you dare) but I don't know that anyone's ordered wine here in the last 50 years. I'm tempted to ask just for giggles but risk, of course, being thrown out by one of their friendliest or surliest bartenders. It really is a choose your own adventure type of place.

The King of Neighborhood Dive Bars (and that's an absolute compliment)!…read moreDeep Eddy Cabaret is a family-owned business that's been around since 1950 or so. I've gotta sidestep and mention that it reminds me of a favorite dive bar in Pittsburgh where I'm originally from. We like to visit after a day at Deep Eddy Pool and lunch at Pool Burger. We end our day here with Shiner drafts served in perfectly frosted beer mugs. This old-school joint attracts patrons of all ages (21+) and backgrounds. Neighborhood regulars, folks from across town (like us), and tourists. It's that place where you pick up conversation with total strangers and feel like you've made lifelong friends even if you never see them again. The bartenders are great. They actually take the time to chat, ask about your day, what you've done up to that point in the day, etc. The bar is embodied in the kitschy decor you'd expect to find at this type of watering hole. Lots of cool things for the human eye to take in. The prices are insanely affordable. $4 for a Shiner draft! Though I've never actually made it, happy hour is Mon-Thurs 12-1 pm and 7-8 pm. Final note, the bathrooms are super clean!
