I arrived around 11:14 a.m. and didn't leave until 3:50 p.m. The initial hour wait was expected and wasn't the issue. Once I was called, I found out I was given the wrong ticket, processed for the wrong credential, and had my last name misspelled despite the correct spelling being on my Georgia license and every document I provided. After catching the mistakes myself, I spent more than three additional hours waiting for them to be corrected while new customers continued being helped. Eventually, a supervisor had to step in because the employee couldn't fix the issue, and even then it took multiple attempts. I understand waiting at the DMV, but over four and a half hours because of preventable employee errors is completely different. When you're handling someone's legal identification, basic accuracy and attention to detail should not be too much to ask. The unsanitary facility didn't make the experience any better. The waiting area smelled strongly of body odor, the seats had questionable stains all over them, and the bathrooms looked like what I imagine a jail bathroom would look like. I also watched a Spanish-speaking woman struggle to communicate while the employee assisting her became increasingly frustrated with the poor woman, who had no one there to help her. Instead of trying to find someone who could assist, the employee just kept repeating the same thing over and over in a more annoyed tone each time. Another Spanish-speaking man was having a similar experience. I finally took it upon myself to go into the waiting room and find someone who could help. Go figure, I was able to flag down two Spanish-speaking employees who could assist them, meaning help was available the entire time. The other employees could have easily done the same instead of repeatedly speaking to customers with language barriers in an increasingly frustrated and condescending manner. Watching employees continue to repeat themselves as though these customers simply weren't understanding, rather than finding the Spanish-speaking assistance that was readily available, was extremely disappointing. For a government facility serving the public, there should be far more patience, professionalism, and effort to make sure everyone can access the services they came there for. A government facility serving the public should be clean, organized, professional, and prepared to assist people facing language barriers with patience and respect. This location needs serious improvement in employee training, customer service, cleanliness, and attention to detail!

The line moved pretty quickly for only 2 people working there and within 5 minutes I was at the front. They were not able to offer what I needed (a title in my hands that day) but did give me a map to where I could get an instant re-issue and were extremely nice about the whole thing. Thinking back, I've had to wait, but if you don't go right at 11:50 you can get in and out in a jiffy.. the place can only handle 3 clerks and about 6 people inside, which is a pain sometimes, but for a govt office it moves. One thing to beware of is people putting on their stickers in the parking lot. They're easy to run over and may mess up your finish.

That said, I did find the station location list on the Vehicle Inspection Program (VIP) website to be quite helpful. Not only did I discover the Hermitage station is open on Saturdays, they also have a live camera feed with an estimated wait time listed beside it. Since certificates are valid for 90 days, I decided it would be a good idea to go long before my tag expired (so if lines sucked, I could bail and go back another time). I also know going in the middle of the month is usually ideal, and thought a beautiful Saturday afternoon may be the ticket to super speedy testing. I thought right! I checked the Hermitage (aka "Station 04-Stoners Bend") camera feed and wait time before heading out. I saw one car waiting with an estimated wait time of 8 minutes. "Sweet. Let's roll." It's been a very long time since I've called the East side of Nashville home, so I GPS'd my way there. Of course the automated woman stated I had arrived at my destination long before I actually had and the signage is close to terrible. Tip: Keep going all the way down Stoners Bend Drive. The testing station IS the "cul-de-sac" of this road! It's located to the left of a gated party rental warehouse. The drive wraps around underneath some beautiful trees where shade is a-plenty. As I approached the station, I found three bays open, one of which was empty and an employee flagged me into the bay. NO WAITING! YAAAASS! I gave the attendant my renewal paperwork and paid him the testing fee of $9.00 in cash. (I prefer giving them exact change, but they will accept up to $20 bill.) He asked me to step out of my vehicle, then asked me to stand in a particular area. I thought I knew what he said and where I was supposed to go (not my first time doing this), but I didn't hear or realize I was supposed to step into the waiting area with the plexiglass windows and door -- as us hockey fans might think it to be...the "penalty box" (cuz that what it look like!). Anyway, since my hearing is not great, he had to ask me three times before I finally understood what he was gesturing and apparently telling me to do that I couldn't understand. (He wasn't rude, and I'm used to just standing inside the yellow lines painted on the floor...not a security box.) Overall, I think I was there a total of 10 minutes. Pretty painless. Oh and my vehicle passed. Hooray!
