At David's Catfish house you're greeted with a big smile and welcome by the hostess , the entrance is clean, and even tho they are busy, the chatter is not extremely loud, always feel welcome. Followed by the wait staff who are friendly, they introduce themselves, they offer suggestions, are patient when a customer can't decide. This is a "must" stop for anyone passing through Andalusia on their way to the beach. I love fried catfish, and this casual, family friendly restaurant lived up to my expectations. I prefer ordering a whole fish instead of filets. There is something satisfying about eating both sides and leaving the skeleton. I can now take Visit Andalusia, Alabama off my bucket list! Not being partial at all to the name of the establishment, David's Catfish House came highly recommended just from other Yelp reviewers. Not hard to find, ask anyone in the local area and they'll point the way. As an iconic structure should, DCH has it's own lot complete with ample parking spaces. We arrived for lunch on a beautiful sunny day. The place was bustling with a busy lunch crowd, but we were still promptly seated in a booth. DCH has a dated, antique yet distinct southern hospitality feel. An fitting seafood/fishing theme was prevalent throughout the restaurant. I mentioned dated because the "flat" rectangular cushion in our booth was in badly need of a upgrade. As quickly as we were seated, our server appeared to take our drink orders. We helped ourselves to the table crackers as we scanned the menu. Their menu is simple yet complete. Aside from the obligatory fried catfish, they also offer "broiled" catfish with cajun or lemon pepper seasoning. Their other in-house Favorites include the popular southern comfort foods: hamburger steak, shrimp & grits, pork chop or ribeye steak. Of course every good southern joint doesn't leave out your choice of cheese grits, baked potato, green beans, hush puppies, coleslaw, sweet potato, baked beans and turnip greens. I would be remiss if I didn't mention their appetizer options of gumbo, fried green tomatoes, onion rings, fried dill pickles or their redneck ben-yays. Didn't try them but it's obviously their version of a New Orleans beignet. Their desserts include lemon ice-box pie (new to me) and cheese cake available with chocolate, caramel or raspberry sauce. As appetizing as their catfish poboy sounded, I was in a mood for a whole catfish. The cup of gumbo was served hot with a hushpuppy on the side. A nice of portion of rice, the gumbo had good flavor and most importantly it met one of my top must-haves... okra! My catfish dinner arrived soon after. The whole (sans the head) catfish was served with hushpuppies and my sides of baked sweet potato and grilled green beans. The baked sweet potato was on par and delicious especially with that thin layer of whipped butter which I added myself. Grilling instead of the typical blanched green beans were a nice touch. Good move DCH. Personally I would've taken the green beans off the grill about a minute and a half earlier for a more crunchy texture, but the green beans were seasoned perfectly and delicious. The hero of the meal was the catfish. Most seafood restaurants like to use a thicker traditional fish fry batter. Yes the thicker batter seals in the flavor and juices better, but the fry used by DCH is so light, it's barely visible. It almost looked like they dry rubbed the catfish with their blend of seasonings then flash fried it to seal in the goodness. But it was dipped into their light batter because every cut that was made in the catfish was coated. The cook was to a perfect golden light brown and the taste was outstanding! Yom Yom Yom Yom! Some of the best fried catfish I've had in awhile. Thank you DCH! If I ever drive through Andalusia again, guess where I'll be heading for food? read more

My wife and I were on a long road trip and decided to spend the night in Andalusia since it reminded us of the same city in Spain. But the best was this great restaurant David's Catfish House. The food is Terrific 5 Stars if you ask me. We want to give compliments to the lovely girl that took care of us, her name skips me now. She was lovely and professional. She did spoke great of her Spanish teacher from Venezuela. If anyone is in this area stop in for the Awesome catfish and gulf shrimp. Needless to say the green fried tomatoes and onion rings are 5 star. read more

What a great place to have some catfish and seafood. Warm cozy place in a very cold day! Wait staff was excellent, very friendly and anticipated our every need. When you order coleslaw as a side they bring it out first like when you order a salad. Captains wafers on the table are a nice touch! The coleslaw is my favorite and sweet. I love it! Sweet tea is always sweet! I ordered the popcorn shrimp, fries and hush puppies. It was an enormous amount of food! My wife ordered the catfish but I didn't get a picture of hers but it was great as well! Everything was tasty and I highly recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner! I was born in Andalusia but have lived in San Diego for the past 45 years or so. Yesterday was my Auntie Hallen's 90th birthday so my daughter & I made the trip in order to be here for the occasion. The highlight of the visit so far has been our meal last night at David's Catfish House! Auntie raves about this establishment so I was extremely delighted to discover that the food, service and ambiance lives up to the hype. The service by our attendant Jerica (probably misspelled ) was exemplary and the personal attention given by the owner (Heenan I believe) to my Auntie, as well as to the rest of our dining party was above and beyond. The staff, as well as a few customers displayed that "Southern Hospitality" that I grew up experiencing while living here up until joining the Navy in 1977. It was very refreshing and reassuring to see that some of the qualities that I so value are still being proudly displayed. As I previously stated, this is my Auntie's favorite spot and now, anytime I'm in town, it will be mine. A very big thank you to everyone involved in making this a joyous occasion. read more

Quality of food was amazing. From the Fried Green Tomatoes to the fish to the coleslaw (which was the best thing ever), it was all very good. Had high hopes for this place. First time going here. Ordered Cajun grilled shrimp was way overpriced and overcooked! They bring you your drinks and an extra glass half full in case the waitress doesn't have time to get back to you for a while. They also bring an extra glass of ice just in case. The air conditioner drips right where people sit. The wait staff are like oh well! It looked as if it needed a good cleaning. Won't go back. read more

I am/was a frequent customer there. I go at least 2 times a month. I always order a salad with my meal no matter where I eat. Over the past 2 months, in 4 visits, my meal has arrived either at the same time as my salad or within two minutes of the salad. Usually by someone other than my server. This last time I specifically asked the server to bring my salad first, as an appetizer. She did. Two bites into my salad, someone from the kitchen I think, brought out my meal. My server came right over and apologized saying that the fried food comes out fast. I left a message on the website basically saying what I just wrote above. I also added that other restaurants seemed to not have this problem. I ended my email by saying that if it happened the next time, I was done with Davids. Mr. Spurlin, the owner, replied to my message simply by saying "We will miss you sir". At least he got that right even if he can't make the meal come out after the salad is about finished. The food is awesome there, service is usually excellent in all areas. I'm pleased to say that his staff cares a lot about the customers even if the owner doesn't. read more

WOW!!I didn't think I liked catfish, but this place changed my mind. By far, the best catfish I've ever had. Super crispy and fresh tasting. The sweet potato was very creamy and tasty, and the turnip greens were exceptional. I also had a cup of gumbo, and this too was incredible. Absolutely loved this meal! The restaurant was very busy but despite that, we got our food timely and even got a personal thank you for coming from Dave. Our server Tamika was very exceptional-she was very polite and remembered every single person's requests, despite us being a large party. The restaurant was very clean and I really liked the decor and atmosphere. Will definitely be back. read more

David's Catfish House is really the only GOOD restaurant in Andalusia, (IMO), so if you don't like seafood you're SOL. Although they do have other things on their menu that you may like such as the usually suspects: hamburgers!...Other reviewers who gave 5 stars rating are spot on. This is THE place to eat! It is very popular and if you go when everyone else and their brother are there, you will be waiting a while to either find a parking spot and/or wait in line to get seated and finally place an order. Not a place to stop unless you can deal with waiting sometimes. They are not perfect but It IS worth the wait. This is also one of less than a handful of Andalusia restaurants that checks off 'some' of my boxes for nice ambience. However, I will be the first to tell you that I HATE country music/whatever they usually have playing in the background but the food usually makes up for it. LOL! Usually a satisfying dining experience, unlike other Andalusia restaurants that sound nice and someone might even fool you into going to one of them but are NOT the real deal. So as the expression kinda goes, "Now that the cat is out of the bag, go get some of that catfish!" Also, go inside for great service. As someone who has used their drive through more than once but has since stopped; I DON'T recommend it as they forget things and you'll get to your destination and wonder "Where's the (insert here)" ???. I have actually caught it before driving off and they can be hostile in giving you what you ordered, even with a receipt in hand to verify it. The drive through is stupid, just go inside! read more

Okay...so I've had catfish at many different restaurants, but this restaurant exceeded my expectations. The restaurant was very clean and the decor was down home country feeling...similar to Cracker Barrel. The hostesses and my waitress were very friendly. The prices were very reasonable and affordable. I ordered the two piece catfish fillet with a baked potato, slaw and lemonade. The portion size was plentiful and I enjoyed everything. I have no complaints at all about this visit and will make it a point to return if I'm in the area again. read more

We have eaten here often and the food is usually reliably good - but not so much today. The shrimp and catfish was as good as ever but the large serving of French fries was terrible - room temperature and not crispy at all. As we walked thru the restaurant to leave, it was apparent that no one was pleased with their fries - plates of fries were left. We usually love David's French fries but these were awful. read more

Just when I needed it most, David's Catfish House scored a hit. The night before a bigger and better-recommended restaurant was mediocre at best. After dining at David's the next day, I regretted not choosing it for both occasions. I would not have hesitated in returning for the second day in a row. Nothing fancy in the facilities, but the food was excellent. No rocket science efforts are required to fry catfish or make cole slaw, but it seems too many dining outfits can't get that through their heads.
