This guy's art is all over Brown County, mostly in the form of murals:…read morethis one, called Happiness in Color, but also, most notably, the mural under the bridge near the Salt Creek Trail. Eagleman is also the owner of Second Story Studio, a gallery on the second story of a historic green building that also houses a candy shop. Man's got a thing for art, apparently. Anyway, you can find this big piece of public art painted on a wall on the side of the Mulberry Cottage building. It's on the corner of Main Street and South Honeysuckle Lane. The mural is big and pink and red and green, and it depicts poppies blowing in the breeze. The mural was completed around 2022. Downtown Nashville has lots of murals and public art everywhere, and this is yet another piece that is integral to the culture of this little artsy town.

As you wander through Nashville, you may happen to pass by a wooden sculpture of a tall, somewhat…read moredated figure of a man who was the deliverer of wisdom through the unlikely means of a comic strip. The sculpture is made from a single fallen tree and was carved by using a chain saw! The artist is Hoosier Chris Trotter who owns the nearby Wooden Wonders workshop in Nashville. He created the sculpture in 2015. The name of the character portrayed is Abe Martin. Abe was the creation of cartoonist Frank McKinney (Kin) Hubbard and was featured in a daily strip in the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. Abe and the cast of characters created by Hubbard had an informal manner of speaking and from what I've read, had a way of making observations about human nature that mixed truth and humor. Nashville has made Abe Martin a prime "mascot" for activities in the area which include festivals and annual "Out House Races", so it seems fitting that a statue be created to celebrate the figure all year around. An example of the type of comment attributed to Abe Martin follows: "Nobuddy kin talk as interestin' as th' feller that's not hampered by facts er information." Review #1317

High Lonesome is a description for the type of music pioneered by Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe…read more Monroe started a Bluegrass Festival in nearby Bean Blossom and it has become the longest continuous running Blue Grass Festival in the country (over 50 years.) To celebrate the contribution of Monroe to the cultural history of the area, an art installation was placed along the central corridor of Nashville, Van Buren Street. Just southeast of the intersection at Main, a sculpture of wood and metal sits in the raised garden plaza outside the Nashville House & Spears Pottery. Local artist Michael Evans created three larger than life musical instruments leaning against each other. The instruments are a guitar, a banjo, and a fiddle (violin) all of which are commonly used in Bluegrass music. Review #1316

You can't miss this sculpture if you're walking around downtown Nashville. "Soaring" is a piece of…read morepublic art that is located outside of some shops in the middle of town. This public art piece depicts leaves flying and swirling up into the sky -- 22 leaves, to be exact. I don't know if this was intentional, but the sculpture itself is 22 feet tall, which seems auspicious! Twenty-two and 22. What does it mean?! It has been said that the sculpture stands for hope and healing, and was created by a nonprofit arts group called Elder Heart, founded by Army veteran and Special Forces operators Magnus Johnson and Mike Kissel. There is a lot of art around Brown County. The public art scene in this part of Indiana is incredible. We really are lucky! Soaring is another great art piece to view in Nashville, so you should definitely check it out.

Nashville has many murals, but the Nature Inspires mural is unique because it's painted on a…read morebridge! The mural is located at the end (or the beginning, depending on where you start) of the Salt Creek Trail, right near the CVS parking lot. Just park at the pharmacy and walk toward the huge concrete bridge under State Road 46. Nature Inspires was created by Kurt Eagleman, an artist who was born in Brown County. The mural depicts nature in some of its forms: spring peepers and Blue Herons and Great Horned Owls, all living in a splendidly colorful landscape. This mural was a nice surprise to see when I got to the end of the Salt Creek Trail. Or, I should say, I knew it was at the end of the Salt Creek Trail, so it was motivation for me to get to the end of Salt Creek Trail, so I could see this piece of public art. If you'd like to learn more about the mural, you can scan a QR code from a little sign that sits by the mural.

This 100' long mural entitled "A Century of Art" is by artist, Kurt Eagleman. Eagleman completed…read morethe mural in July, 2023. My favorite part of the wall depicts legendary local resident, Grandma Barnes, with the iconic holly hocks in her garden. Her colorful garden was a popular subject for early Brown County artists to paint. There is a quote about the artists sharing her garden with the world on the mural. There is a farmer on the wall that seems skeptical of the artists coming to town. The next panel shows the famous Liars Bench. And finally, there is an image of artist Gustave Baumann at his easel. The mural is easy to find on Old Hickory Lane, in between the Heritage Mall and Out of the Ordinary restaurant. I love the color and story that this mural adds to the alley. There is a public parking lot and restrooms at the end of the alley.

This place might best be described as "off the beaten path". Not only literally (It's along…read moreJefferson St) but in the type of things you will find here. The website associated with the business lists gifts, cards, art, vintage, and curiosities. That pretty well covers it. The building, like many in Nashville, is a former home turned business. As you enter, there is a staircase that leads up (I'm not sure that area is open to the public). A couple of staff were having a conversation as I strolled through the house. I noticed miniature houses/rooms recreated by the owner who spent time as a curator of furnishings for a New York museum. I also found puzzles and pencils and a diverse group of items that may work as a gift or as a conversation piece in your home. I didn't see anything that screamed "buy me" while there, but it was an interesting place to check out. You never know what you will find. Review #2780
