High Lonesome is a description for the type of music pioneered by Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe…read more Monroe started a Bluegrass Festival in nearby Bean Blossom and it has become the longest continuous running Blue Grass Festival in the country (over 50 years.) To celebrate the contribution of Monroe to the cultural history of the area, an art installation was placed along the central corridor of Nashville, Van Buren Street. Just southeast of the intersection at Main, a sculpture of wood and metal sits in the raised garden plaza outside the Nashville House & Spears Pottery. Local artist Michael Evans created three larger than life musical instruments leaning against each other. The instruments are a guitar, a banjo, and a fiddle (violin) all of which are commonly used in Bluegrass music. Review #1316

It was decided that a sculpture by local artist Bernie Carreno would be added to the north end of the building. "Flight" was constructed in 2013 by Carreno and installed as the Kroger finished completion in 2016. The sculpture is ten feet tall and made of steel. It was inspired by watching birds in flight and conveys a sense of motion as the "arms" of the sculpture seem to be blowing in the wind. Carreno has been instrumental in the local art world having been involved with the Indianapolis Art Center for numerous years, even teaching sculpting classes. His work may be found all over the country, including pieces placed locally: three pieces on the U of Indy campus: Connected; Precautions; and Sol y Sombra. Artist Jerald Jacquard created this large blue sculpture in 1988 (He has another piece called Point/Counterpoint in bright red near the B-line!) What I like about the piece is that is formed by using geometric shapes arranged at odd angles which makes the overall appearance of the piece change greatly depending upon the point of view. Fortunately, the piece is accessible from all sides. The name February is symbolic because it has 28 days and the underlying sculpture has 28 blocks or half blocks welded together to form the overall shape. You can also walk through the piece since it is elevated on blocks. Review #2182

The world renowned architecture for a city of only 50,000 is incredible. The city has done a remarkable job of preserving old, while introducing new structures. As I walked through the streets and visited landmarks, I was struck by how easy Columbus is to visit. Parking is easy and there is a flow downtown that suits a walking tour. Most of the buildings are free to visit and restroom facilities were easy to find. People are friendly and eager to describe their buildings and help visitors get around. The local restaurants are really good with and interesting mix of American and International cuisines. I found prices reasonable. The local history is interesting especially the impacts made by Irwin Miller. It would take a week to see everything. Next visit, I will make reservations for some of the tours and exquisite restaurants in advance.

This town has a good down home family feel to it. My kids really liked the play space in The Commons. I could not believe that it was actually free. Their is also a kids museum across the street called Kids Commons. Columbus is not the most diverse city in Indiana. 87% of its population is white. I really like this town. It is not as crazy busy as Indy, but still has a lot going on. The town host many events such as First Thursday, Holiday Pops!, Festival of lights, Canines and Cocktails and Movies in the Campground. An interesting fact about the town is that it is home to footwear pioneer Chuck Taylor. Taylor is an alumunist of Columbus High School. The town has a very storied history. It is known for its art and architecture. Be sure to check out all the public art and wonderful architecture while visiting. Some notable public art includes: Choas, History and Mystery, C, Heroes, and the Family. Some architectural structures to be on the look out for include: the Irwin Union Bank, Bartholomew County Courthouse, Columbus City Hall, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, and the McEwen-Samuels-Marr House. Additionally, in 1844, the first railroad in Indiana was constructed to Columbus from Madison, Indiana. Additionally, the city's Crump Theatre, which was built in 1889, is the oldest theater in Indiana. This is a nice place to visit and and I like to bring my family here to spend the day sometime on a nice day to take in all of the history and sights.

It was constructed to celebrate Bloomington being honored as an "All-American City" by the National Civic League and is intended to be a conceptual representation of the gathering of diverse ideas from each of the four ordinal directions; North, South, East and West. It is a nice sculpture, especially considering its age and is placed in a very picturesque area of the park. It is 4 towering limestone slabs that all intersect in the center forming a quad that has the four panels pointing in the North, South, East and West direction. The slabs have some symmetrical line designs on them, but otherwise are pretty plain. There is a small parking lot at the front of Miller-Showers Park that offers 3-hour parking. It is on the opposite end of the park from the sculpture, but not a long walk. As with most public art that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops or making this part of a larger itinerary, to maximize your time and trip. You could start your itinerary with a visit to, Miller-Showers Park, the park the sculpture is located.

The sculpture represents a tree (using two intersecting two dimensional tree shapes bisecting through the middle) with an Eagle's nest at the top. Off to the southwest are three human figures also presented in 2D. A plaque on site explains that the sculpture "visualizes the mission of the school Corporation. The Eaglet poised ready for flight, represents both a mascot and each child in the community. The three figures watching the fledgling eaglet are symbolic of the joint responsibilities of parents, teachers, and community members who have, are, and will continue to nurture the development of our children. The "lifelines" of good character are cut into the roots of the learning tree while the trunk and canopy are emblazoned with oak leaves and symbols of learning. Since the roundabout is by the Crescent Bend neighborhood, Dale interpreted the name by applying multiple curved pieces in his work. From Dale's own website: "Positioned at the center of the roundabout the form of the sculpture is evocative of a torchiere. LED lighting emanates from and between the limestone slabs at the apex of the piece. At the juncture of these roads the sculpture becomes a beacon for the residents of the neighborhood. " Sadly, the location of the piece makes it difficult to appreciate without a bit of a hike. There are no local parking areas near the sculpture other than private businesses. And getting across the roundabout to the center is challenging if you want to get close enough to see the intricately carved detail of the piece. Per his website, the sculpture is 9' in height and stands upon a 2'6" pedestal. Review #2226
