"I'm looking for a place to play. I heard that all through…read morethe Midwest, they have towns with teams. And in some places, they'll even find you a day job so you can play ball nights and weekends. This is your lucky day, kid. We're going someplace kind of like that." Field of Dreams Danville Stadium was finished in 1946, and if you want to dip yourself in magic waters to visit a place that Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, and Pee Wee Reese have played, then get here quick. This is the current home of the Danville Dan's which is affiliated with a collegiate summer league. Some of the college kids that play here literally have to have sponsors within the community that give them room and board. Still not so different that the romanticized masterpiece that is Field of Dreams. The original all wood bleachers still creak and moan. On my last visit the Danville Barber Shop Choir sang the National Anthem and many other awesome diddies, including selections from The Music Man between innings. There are cheap tickets, cheap crappy beer, cheap Chicago Dogs..what could be better? There are Cubs and Cardinal nights, if you wear the particular teams cloths on certain days you get ticket discounts. Which are about $6-10 to begin with. $2 beers on certain nights, which is cheaper that pop. Unlike any professional team, or even major college team (ehm University of Illinois) they actually want people to come and enjoy themselves. Not to mention parts of the movies "The Babe" and "A League of Their Own" were filmed here. After both films, they got some upgrades to the stadium. First was the scoreboard...which needs to be replaced...hmm what new old time baseball movie is going to be filmed next? Then actually getting stadium lights. There is no official address that I can find for the stadium, it is just known. Which has to say something about how ingrained this place is for the community. They still get great crowds, and this is about as great of a spot to watch our pastime as any in the country. I am surprised I cannot find it on yelp already. If you want your own real field of dreams, make this a regular summer spot in central/east Illinois.
