I'm not much of a reviewer but I thought my experience could help prevent someone from going through what I continue to go through years later because of this doctor. In 2016 I had my upper jaw reconstructed/realigned by Dr. Mueller. I thought he was a godsend at the time because he made me love my smile/face. 11 months later, according to him, "my body rejected the bone graft placed." And I quickly went into surgery to fix that under his care. 4 years after initial surgery, I blew my nose and a screw comes out followed by bleeding that wouldn't stop for awhile. I called and I was told "this is normal." 3 years ago as I type this, I had swelling in my face and was living in Nevada at the time so I found a new oral maxillary facial surgeon out there and he had to put me in nearly emergency surgery to remove some hardware that was infected. This new surgeon also stated he never heard of a screw coming out of a nose after a jaw surgery. Sometime between then and now: two root canals because at least two teeth's roots were hit during the 2016 surgery and my teeth were now dying. August 2024: I had a draining fistula in my mouth near my scar tissue from the previous surgeries. I flew from Virginia to Nevada to see the new surgeon because no surgeon in Virginia will take on my case. Again I went into emergency surgery. We quickly found that Dr. Mueller put a screw into my #7 tooth (one that was attempted to save by root canal). My body had been rejecting the tooth so badly that the infection ate so much bone. I now have a huge hole in my mouth from the bone loss. 2 weeks later, I have to go into emergency extraction of that tooth. Last week, we find another infection above tooth #10 from a screw being drilled into it (the other tooth that was attempted to save by root canal). So we are planning on extracting that one in early 2025. Today, I meet with multiple doctors/surgeons nearly weekly and across the country to try to find a plan to help the bone loss and find a permanent option for the missing teeth. Many doctors/surgeons nearly hold my hand as they say "I'm sorry you're going through this and will continue to." I've had surgeons say, "I wish you found us back in 2016." I was never warned I would deal with this almost the rest of my life. I paid Dr. Mueller out of pocket because "insurance says it's cosmetic." I've paid $100's of thousands on my mouth and have probably double that in costs ahead of me because of Dr. Mueller's work. If you've made it this far, get a second opinion away from Dr. Mueller. My surgery by him is my biggest life regret. read more

AWESOME oral surgeon FANTASTIC customer service. I drive two hours just to come here. They've won a lifelong patient here. During my periodic dental exam my dentist found white spots in my mouth! she referred me to an oral surgeon that didn't accept my insurance. So after researching on my insu providers website I chose to come see Dr. Mueller because he has high reviews on my providers site from other patients. AND MAN ARE THEY RIGHT! I drove the two hours and met other happy patients that had some very severe issues which Dr. Mueller fixed and they were there for follow ups. As for me luckily Dr. Mueller is well experienced regaring the issue I have which turned out to be licen planus. which he recognized right away and i come for my check ups now and I'm doing GREAT! And his staff is just as good. I'm very happy with everything and will continue to come here I'm a patient for life ! read more

Terrible front desk. Not worth it. RUN Away. No insurance assistance it's your job. Not theirs. If you have cash no problem.

While he did do a good job removing my wisdom teeth . The billing is the issue. I was told to pay upfront before we did anything I did so he removed the teeth. Then they start sending me bills for more money . Why say the price upfront then after I pay now I have to pay more . Bad business I wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

Good quality staff, atmosphere, and experience. Dr. Mueller pulled out my wisdom tooth and he made sure I was comfortable during pre-op (I have extreme anxiety with needles). But everything healed nicely. read more

I was referred to Dr Mueller for a tooth extraction. From my very first interaction with the receptionists, to the consultation with the doctor and his assistant, to the day of surgery I had a very positive interaction. I went during the Covid19 pandemic and during these times, we need patience, support, and understanding, and this office gave me that. It wasnt painful at all and he was very gentle. Had a good experience with meeting Dr. Mueller and appreciate the help and advice he gave me for my TMJD problem. I was not very impressed with the clinical nurses/assistants or the general office vibe. The nurse/assistant I interacted with was quite unfriendly when taking my history and images. I didn't feel like I was getting good "care" from this nurse. The xray machine was in a shared space with what looked to be a supply closet, which was strange. So I had a positive experience with Dr. Mueller but not really with the other staff or office environment. read more

My daughter was in a terrible car accident resulting in a broken jaw which required a 4 hour surgery and 2 plates on both sides of her jaw. Dr. Mueller was the operating physician at Sentara Norfolk General. Although, he did an excellent job at the hospital with surgery, when we arrived for her post op appointment our experience was not pleasant at all. Upon entrance, the receptionists sit behind a closed tempered glass (I am assuming for HIPAA and privacy protection none the less very unwelcoming). I stood in front of the glass and waited, was handed paperwork to complete and the glass was closed back immediately. (The receptionist was actually the friendliest encounter we had in the office. She was pleasant in explaining the paper work and letting us know that although they did not accept our insurance, we could submit the insurance claim information for the car accident and they could bill that way. She also rescheduled our appointment to an earlier time as I called with concerns of the amount of pain my daughter was experiencing and the leakage of her bandages. I am pleased with her being so accommodating.) When my minor child was pulled back, his nurse or assistant without even speaking first put on a mask and then asked my child "have you been showering". The smell was from the leakage and draining after her surgery not due to poor hygiene. She then multiple times talked about the smell. Asking us, did we "smell it", saying that it "could be infected" without the doctors evaluation. She then asked me was my daughter taking an antibiotic, I told her one was not prescribed. She then asked why I didn't call them to have one written. (Unbeknownst to her, I called Sentara asking about the drainage and if she was supposed to be given an antibiotic and they advised me that since her post op appointment was the next day, I could wait vs bringing her back into ER just for repacking bandages and to confirm the Rx at that time.) Once Dr. Mueller entered the room, he confirmed that he wrote a note suggesting that she stay on the antibiotic in the hospital via IV and that they also write a script for 10 days after due to the severity of her surgery. He stated that all he does is "make the recommendation but Sentara writes the Rx." As he proceeded with his examination, he started trying to get her to speak which was still uncomfortable for her so I told her to use her phone to type what she was trying to say to which he clearly was opposed to and very rudely said "all she did was use that phone the whole time I was in the room in the hospital. I don't want her to use her phone". She wasn't using her phone upon him entering the room but, I grabbed her phone, sitting next to her so that he couldn't say anything about her using it. She told him she couldn't move her tongue. (She could, it was just very uncomfortable for her.) He then put his finger in her mouth and pushed aggressively on her tongue causing her to jump out of the seat, crying and tell him he was hurting her. At this point, she was obviously irritated. She told him as best she could "you don't know how my mouth feels, don't touch me." To which he responded "don't give me attitude". Because, someone in the room had to remain calm. I told my daughter to calm down. Assured her that he wasn't trying to hurt her, he was trying to help but I honestly wanted to walk out at this point. Once, I got her calm, he proceeded. He cut the main bandages that were wrapped around her head and assured us that her scars were not infected, gave us the Rx for the antibiotic, and asked that we return in a week. Her bandages were not repacked. I ended up taking her to an urgent care for that. The smell went away instantly. I am currently researching another Oral Surgeon to remove her stitches as I am completely baffled by the treatment she received. I understand that teenagers have an issue with their phones however, the other Nurses, FNP, and associates in Sentara advised her to write what she wanted to say vs trying to talk to alleviate any pain as best they could. In addition, this is a patient first and a child who prior to a car accident has never had any health issues, surgeries etc. That phone was used as a distraction for a very traumatizing experience. This added to that. I expect that all patients be treated with dignity and respect. My daughter absolutely was not! When we were given the name of the operating physician I was given a sense of relief in hearing from other physicians that he was "one of the best." I looked on his website http://vafacialsurgery.com, his attention to detail in his paintings assured me that he would also care about the aesthetic side of the surgery which is most important to a 16 year old child. I am very thankful that the surgery went well however, I am extremely disappointed in the way my daughter was treated as a patient in his own facility. read more

I went online to look at patient progress photos, some general information on the doctor, and ways to schedule appointments. I feel as if this is very unprofessional. I will be going back to my dentist to find another facial surgeon. read more

After five weeks with my jaw wired shut . By Dr Mualler. I got zero follow up care. In the third week i thought that I had reinjured my jaw and call dr. Mueller's office dispassionately I was told to just go to the emergency room not the end of five weeks when the wires fell off note fell offit was to reveal the doctor Mueller had wired my jaw shut incorrectly any of essentially pushed three of my teeth sideways in my mouth thanks doc I hope that I'm allowed to practice my trade for you someday. now I got to find someone else to take the screws out of my mouth read more

Although Dr. Mueller was fantastic their billing receptionist and office manager doesn't know what they are doing. When you sign an estimate of repair you shouldn't be off 390.00 dollars!!! I'm sure you would be upset if you signed an estimate to get your vehicle fixed and your service consultant was off 390.00 you would be upset to. It's your job to look out for your patient and check their benefits to see what is covered before the procedure is done. Be honest and make them aware beforehand . Wasn't even willing nor did they offer a discount. When I asked if Dr. Mueller was aware of this she said he doesn't handle it. If I owned a practice, I would want to know if my customers/patients were upset . read more

I have been seeing Mr. Mueller since September of 2018 following an accident I had. For starters, the staff is amazing. Ms. Libba and Ms Carrie are the absolute best. I actually look forward to my weekly convos with Brittany while I wait for Dr. Mueller. Now while I'm so ready for this recovery process to be over, im so glad to be able to have each and everyone of you help me thru this. After developing a Class III Malocclusion around the age of 18, I knew in the back of my head that I wanted to get it fixed one day. I had family members and close friends continually ask me how this happened and quite honestly it made me feel quite insecure about my face and general body image. I became so insecure, unhappy, and uncomfortable that I felt genuinely bad taking photos with family and friends. Dr. Mueller did an absolutely phenomenal job at correcting my jaw and subsequently - how I view myself in the mirror and my overall image. I am so pleased with the experience with Dr. Mueller and his staff, the speedy and near-painless recovery process, and the results. In the beginning, I was quite hesitant with going forward with the surgery. There was a bit of anxiety on how I was expected to look afterwards, how difficult and long that I thought the recovery process would be, and the potential for complications. After my initial consultation all these worries were minimized as the result of his very friendly and professional staff, Dr. Mueller explaining in exquisite detail what and how he planned to fix my jaw, and his extremely high success rate and experience. I'm thoroughly impressed by the overall experience and I urge anybody who is on the fence about surgery to schedule a consultation. I'm so happy that my face looks normal now and I'm not constantly worrying about how my face looks to others. Disappointed at being told to pay one thing after I insisted on know before hand what would I would be responsible for and then upon receiving my statement was actually charge way more! I pay for dental insurance and expect those who deal with the insurance company to get their payment to verify before telling me incorrectly. Total blame game and unacceptable practice of falsifying billing practice. Waited till I received my bill before continuing on with recommended treatment and glad I did. I was referred to Dr Mueller a few years back for tmj. He is by far one of the best medical providers I have ever been to. After having tmj surgery with him in 2012 I have been back for my wisdom teeth and for more tmj problems. His practice and office staff are awesome. Beware! I visited Dr. David Mueller for a consultation regarding TMJ. I had never seen this doctor before in my life, and I only saw him for 1 visit/consult. Be careful and beware...this doctor will let you think he can treat your TMJ with a specially designed night guard that only he can produce. Your insurance company will be contacted for an estimate for the night guard and then you will be ordered to complete a psychiatric evaluation before proceeding any further. He has his ladies in the office trained very well for this, too. He requires a psychiatric evaluation because he shares during the consultation that according to his latest research ALL people with TMJ have psychiatric issues. I was so appalled that I filed a state complaint with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professions, for this appeared to be an abuse of a license. It warranted further investigation. I had shared my experience with other professionals and friends and they could not believe it; they had never heard of such a thing. The professionals seemed to recognize the notorious behavior, however. The complaint warranted investigation but the decision of the board was that there was insufficient evidence of a violation of the laws or regulations governing the practice of dentistry. My thought is what about Best Practice. Since I do not know all those laws and regulations, I think this doctor is treading that fine line because I cannot imagine that he is implementing Best Practice. read more
