I don't review on Yelp often but wanted to provide a current review of David Witchell salon in Peddler's Village. The services that I receive are cut and highlight (I am a client of Kelly). She is superb, an artist. Yes, the services are expensive and for me: totally money very well spent. I receive partial highlights about twice a year. Kelly has never attempted to "sell" me on additional services. In fact, she has encouraged me NOT to highlight that often and instructed on the proper method to maintain the highlights. Her expertise in cutting is beyond what I have received in the past: I have had my hair cut in Paris (David Mallett), New York City-(Ric Pipino, Heidi Klum's ex-husband) and in Greenwich Connecticut-just some places and all very high end. The David Witchell salon and Kelly are outstanding and just as good, if not better than I've experienced before. Every cut that I've had (Kelly) grows in so well. The true sign of a great cut is how well your hair looks in the 6th week (yes, I can go that long between cuts!). I am often asked by strangers, where I get my hair done-always a compliment. Regarding the reviews about the front desk-I have not experienced rudeness at all. I note that many of the reviews about front desk attitude, occurred around Covid times, so maybe folks were on edge about that? I give folks the benefit of the doubt and a lot of grace. But that's just me :) Overall, this place is a gem. read more

Extremely disappointed in how this salon handled our reservation. I'll start by saying I have visited this spa on multiple occasions to celebrate Mother's Day, couples spas and more with family and friends. I've always had a good experience, until I planned a 50th birthday girls spa day for 5 of my friends. Unfortunately, the night before our spa day, our birthday girls' husband suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital. Needless to say, we were not going to the spa in the morning. After almost a month in the hospital, and a miracle, her husband is home and recovering. We reached out to the spa to reschedule our day. We needed to pay a 50% deposit and under stood this was non-refundable when we booked, however we had hoped the owners would have understood that an emergency situation was the only reason we had to cancel, rather postpone, our day. We would have loved to come back and celebrate more than just a birthday, and more than taken care of the staff had they accommodated us. However they decided that 'rules are the rules' and would keep our $700 deposit and not apply to a future visit. Needless to say, why would we ever come back? And patronize a business that has no heart or understanding for their clients. Sadly, I will not return or bring anyone to David Witchell again, and will find a spa that values their clients. I would not recommend spending your hard earned money at a place like this. read more

What a great place to get your hair done. My daughter and grandchildren go here all the time. They are not cheap, but the quality of the haircuts are outstanding. The place is clean and well organized. They have plenty of parking and it's off a main road. The staff is friendly and want to make sure they are providing good service. I got my daughter a gift certificate here and they made it easy to accomplish this on line. I live in another state and would not be able to do it in person. I've been to a million salons in my lifetime. This one blew all of the others away. The amount of time David and Skylar spent discussing what would be best for me and listen to exactly what I wanted, blew me away. David set me up with an appointment the day before the wedding with senior stylist ,John. John spent 90 minutes reshaping the cut and styling it. Unfortunately I'm stuck using their services for my wedding. They are not my regular salon - I am using them only because I'm getting married an hour from home and they were a preferred vendor of my venue. Poor communication and ZERO accountability from the owner and event coordinator. This is not a jab at the stylists - the stylists did a wonderful job during my trial. I'm being blamed for not following up with getting a final answer about cost for my hair and makeup trial for my wedding... also a new employee of the salon is being unfairly blamed for lack of follow up. He is not the event coordinator nor is he the owner of this place. The owners response? He will put it in the employee manual. Laughable. Not a single bride has asked about a trial cost he says since 1996. Yeah ok. I find that hard to believe. This is my first marriage, I've never done a trial before. I assumed it was part of the package that's paid for- or at least it would be discounted. As a bride you'd think it would have been communicated by the salon from the get go that there was a cost at all for a trial. I never would've traveled an hour in poor weather conditions to pay $225 for a trial. Ridiculous. The best is that the event coordinator I had originally worked with left the salon (this was never communicated to me) then the owner tries to blame it on systems/software updating or some BS. How this place has been in business 20+ years is beyond me. read more

This was my first time being at this establishment. Since I was already staying at the Golden Plough Inn for my 60th birthday, I decided to celebrate with a spa day. When my daughter and I first entered, I was greeted by a not so friendly young girl at the front desk. Never did she say "Hello or How can I help you today", no "Good Morning" her comment was "who are you here for?". I responded that I had no idea since I was there for spa services. This young girl was incredibly rude and unwelcoming, if it wasn't for the fact that I actually wanted to try this place so much I would have probably told her off and left. I was interested in trying a new place for a haircut and David J Witchell is conveniently located in Peddler's Village, so I decided to try there. After reading reviews it seemed like a good choice. Unfortunately I had a bad experience. My appointment was scheduled for 2:30. At 2:45 I approached the front desk to make sure I had the right appointment time. They proceeded to tell me that the stylist would be done in about 15 minutes. At 3:15.....45 minutes of waiting I was still not in the chair, and no one provided an update. Finally around 3:20 they asked me if I would like a new appointment with another stylist, and he proceeded to cut my hair. Had they known my original stylist was running late, I would have appreciated the heads up from the front desk (they could have given me the courtesy of calling a head to inform me). read more

Long story short: Good service, questionable pricing. We've been here three times over the last few years (always for hairdressing) and, while the cut/styling itself was very good, the customer service side of things has steadily declined while the pricing has gotten worse. My most recent visit cost 30% more than any previous visit, for the exact same service from a different stylist. Prices are simply listed as "From $25", "From $40", etc. What they don't state anywhere is that each individual stylist has different pricing, even though that's not mentioned anywhere on their site or in their booklet. After inquiring about the overcharge, part of the explanation I was eventually given was "We assume people know that's how it works." No. People do not know that, because that's not a thing. Do we need to perform our own interviews with stylists before booking an appointment in order to guesstimate how much they cost? Or should we request "I'd like a 2-4 year experienced stylist today, thanks."? Absurd. Each stylist I've used was a full designer, not a junior designer. I was eventually told that my most recent stylist had 30 years experience in the industry, hence the higher fee. If I had known when I booked the appointment that I'd be paying more for the exact same service I'd gotten before, it might've been acceptable. But being essentially ambushed with an unexpected cost and a dissatisfactory explanation is unacceptable. read more

I cannot say enough great things about DJW! I came here for my hair and makeup to be done before my engagement pictures and got so many compliments that I ended up booked my wedding hair and makeup! I brought the whole wedding party, my mom and mother in law as well! It is such a comfortable, homey place to be and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I also come here to get my eyebrows done and Nini does an incredible job!! I live in NYC and wish I was closer to DJW so I could come more often :) read more

Completely disappointed with the service I recently had. I asked for a blowout with soft curls, and went to a SENIOR stylist. When he finished, I was completely flat and straight. It actually looked like I rolled right out of bed. I hated it. I asked if he could put a few curls in and he said "I don't do curls". After seeing other stylists with curling irons, I told him I didn't like the flat messy hair and wanted some curls. He ended up curling it, and charged me $40 EXTRA dollars, on top of the $30 I paid for the blowout. So all in, I paid $75 for soft curls?! I mentioned this to the girl who was checking me out, and she said "well now you know for next time!" There won't be a next time!! This staff is so rude, should have told me before "curling" that it was more than DOUBLE the cost of the blowout. Someone please direct me to the closest drybar! I get $35 perfect blowouts from them, and they are so nice! read more

I did a couples massage with a voucher that I received from a spa hotel package with The Golden Plough. First off, the spa area is absolutely beautiful. Every single corner is clean and truly had the lux spa feel. I forgot our masseuse names but they were both awesome and I loved the couples massage room. My only tiff is the girl at the front desk. She speaks in a very condescending manner. Any question that I did ask, she spoke in an annoyed tone. I made my spa appointment 2 weeks prior, I did mention the voucher and was asked if we wanted Swedish or deep tissue. On appointment day, I handed the female the voucher, she looked it over and said we were all set. After the massage, the female stated there was an issue with the voucher and I owed $30 because we received a deep tissue massage. Confused, I asked if that was not part of the voucher. She said no. I did not proceed to fight this but I was definitely confused and bothered by it. (The voucher doesn't state the type of massage, it just said voucher for 2 for couples massage). To make matters worst, my husband ran to the ATM to get cash for tipping and the same front desk female was gossiping with another worker about their boss. I was highly uncomfortable. Such a beautiful spa with staff that seems to careless. I literally stood up and started to pace around the front area as I waited for him to get back. The girl had to call the manager and I believe she thought she hung up the phone but she didn't and I could tell the manager set her straight over the phone. All in all, great spa! Definitely visit, don't get screwed on your voucher like I did and hopefully you wouldn't need to deal with this same female. read more

Unfortunately David Witchell has lost my business. I had been coming to the newtown and Peddler's village location for spa services occasionally for years. I've always had great services but was always unhappy with the front desk/receptionists. They were mostly rude or ignored me standing in front of them, looked disinterested, etc. Just always were not friendly or welcoming. But I always loved the massage therapists so I kept coming. This last experience was the last straw for me. I called to make a massage appointment with Lorie, who I saw last time and loved. I wanted to start seeing her monthly. The receptionist said Lorie was on call and doesn't have set hours, so they would have to call her to see her availability. Sure that's fine, I agreed to have her call me back. When the receptionist called back she only offered me one available day almost 3 weeks away. I tried to work with the receptionist to find a day that worked with my schedule ( I'm a nurse and work nights) but the receptionist became short and annoyed I could tell. She started laughing if I said I couldn't do a specific date she suggested. Instead of asking which days worked for me she just rattled off days that she had openings (none which I could make). By the end of the call I felt frustrated like she wasn't trying to help me make the appointment. I suggested she call Lorie to ask about some other dates. It's been 3 weeks and I still haven't gotten a call back. I took my business elsewhere to where the front staff is more accommodating and polite. read more

The only reason I'm giving David Witchell a four star rating is because the first time I came in to get high lights done on my hair the stylist did a really bad job and we were not on the same page with communicating. But David did everything possible to accommodate me and referred me to Cynthia who did an amazing job on my highlights and not only that was very friendly, sweet and accommodating. I have to say I was very upset and nervous doing my hair but her sweet personality calm me down and made my experience the second time around much more pleasant! I had my wedding hair and makeup done at David J Witchell (so did my bridal party). We hit a few speed bumps along the way regarding the deposit and the balance due because I booked the wedding right before their policy changed, but we easily ironed it out. The girl who did my make up trial was not the same girl who did it the day of, which threw me off and made me question the point of having a trial. However, the girl who did my make up for the wedding (Nini) did a FANTASTIC job (way better than the trial), so I was THRILLED! Arlene did my hair, and she did a terrific job. She was very patient with me when I wanted to have another trial. (just a general tip for anyone getting married, make sure you know EXACTLY what you want- front, back, side, ect: hairdressers are not really willing to take creative license on with a bride) My husband and I had a couples massage the night before the wedding, and it was wonderful. The spa is a beautiful space. At the end of the day, I was very happy with how I looked and how everyone else looked. Pricing was reasonable for a wedding. This salon and spa is exquisite, luxurious, and sumptuous, impeccably decorated and the services are excellent! I had the Shaman Scrub Treatment that was a full body exfoliation followed by a 8 head shower while on a massage bed. I also enjoyed an 85 minute full body massage that released any stress and tension that was once there. I will be back for my next "staycation" very soon! read more

Too big of a salon to care and far too expensive for what it is. I was satisfied after my first visit where I was greeted by David and friendly staff, and was new to the area and having a hard time to find the right colour specialist. Second time (after booking with a less than friendly staff member), was on a busy Saturday and the service was completely different. In fact, I was sent to a self drying station and no one even checked the colour of my hair! I've emailed with pictures to get NO reply, 10 days later. So many choices in the area, go somewhere else. read more

I had the opportunity to sit as a hair model for Julia as part of her training. She was AMAZING even in training (I'm sure they have a high bar for who they accept) and David, the owner, was present and providing input throughout (and demonstrating techniques at different points as well). He is a TRUE genius--a real artist, and great teacher (I'm a former teacher myself, and even though this is hair and not K-12, a good instructor is a good instructor). I literally had no idea that so many factors could go into a good cut, but they were extremely well versed. Makes me kind of scared to go anywhere else now, honestly! My hair has NEVER looked this good. In fact, it had been shedding a lot more than usual recently, and yet they managed to give me a cut that seriously made it look fuller than it EVER has. And stylish/cute, versatile as well. It was important to me to get a cut that wouldn't require hours of styling or multiple products just to look half as good as it did in the salon, and they certainly came through. While it can be dressed up or down, and is very versatile (from looking good straightened or wavy, and from parting it to the left, right, or middle--I'm an options girl, lol) it still looks awesome the next day even though I literally just rolled out of bed. All in all, I *highly* recommend the place. They didn't even request that I write a recommendation or anything, but I just feel that strongly. Have a good day, all :) read more

Issues up front: 1) Cancellation Charge without advising (REMINDING) customer at Check-out (just snuck it in the bill) 2) Making me feel uncomfortable about cancelling my daughter's appointment- by making me wait in the lobby longer than should have (especially since I was EARLY). Whispering amongst each other... 3) Would not honor a Coupon at check-out. Really? 4) Felt like I was in the movie "Get Out" Very disappointed in the treatment by Amy ("management") with regard to my concerns on the cancellation policy; and how they charged me without verbally advising (reminding) at the time of check-out, or providing the option to use that Service later that day (as most Salons do). They could have said, "I'm sorry to hear your daughter is not feeling well, but, as you may recall our cancellation policy requires 24 hour notice or we charge 1/2 the cost of the Service, or, can we offer you the opportunity to use that Service later today or credit toward another service??" But, NOTHING of the sort.... just whispering and dirty looks. After I just spent $$$ on hair services, and was about to spend hundreds more on Spa services.... in good faith as a first time customer, they could have given me a frickin' break! Not like I'm a repeat cancel. Visited from out of town with my family, and spent over $300 worth of services from hair to Spa Services that weekend between my young adult daughter and myself. My daughter had her hair done that Fri, and she loved it. We both respectively had massage/facial services that Sun, but, my daughter could not return due to unexpected illness that morning (fever/cold). Therefore, I returned alone for my massage and arrived before my 10 am appointment to advise them of her illness/cancellation. They acknowledged the cancellation, asked me to have a seat in the Lobby, and started whispering about my cancellation amongst each other- giving me the 'stink eye'. I waited, and waited (no other customers on a rainy/cold Sunday morning- except 1 other who arrived after me). Instead of walking me upstairs so I can "relax" with the coffee/tea/water/snacks, they made me wait by the front desk Lobby for the masseuse (who I saw in the lobby when I arrived early- I picked her from the website, so, I recognized her, but she did not know I was her client). They (Esthetician) were clearly upset that I cancelled my daughter's facial; so, it felt like that was my punishment- make me wait a good 15 mins.... and 10 mins into my appointment time... The masseuse came down and apologized, and didn't realize I was down in the Lobby. OK fine.... they all knew.... :-/ After I was shocked to see the ~$45 cancellation charge on my bank account days later, I called the salon to speak to management about it. I was told the manager was not available until after 1 pm the following day. I misunderstood, and thought they meant 1 pm that day (who does not have management avail to handle problems for a day?). When I called back after 1 pm insisting to speak to someone bc I had to go back to work the next day and wanted to resolve it today, she "allowed" me to speak with Amy. I told Amy I made these appointments weeks ago and didn't recall the scheduler advising me of their cancellation policy (and it is hidden in the FAQs online), and expected the professional courtesy to remind me of the added cost on my bill. She said it was on my receipt that I signed. I told her I couldn't see the fine details, since I didn't have my reading glasses on after the massage, and didn't recall a potential added cost- She was soooooo argumentative with me about EVERYTHING. And, would not have any of it. I also told her I was disappointed that I brought a "free upgrade" coupon at check-out, and she would not honor since I didn't show them prior to my appointment. Really??! I also told her I did not feel comfortable as a woman of color due to the way I was treated/handled. They appeared to be fearful of 'confrontation' with me by reminding me of their cancellation policy- so, they just clammed up and snuck it in the bill. She was outraged by my comment and stated they have MANY customers of differing races who come into their salon. Yeah, ok.... I am entitled to my PERCEPTIONS! I didn't see any diversity in their Salon Staff or customers both days I came in... Hmmmm Just tell the customer of any additional charges- isn't that a requirement??? to get my authorization/acknowledgement prior to charging??? Seeing it unexpectedly days later- just seemed so deceitful/untrustworthy! And, hearing the nasty response from Amy was that much more alarming....instead of diffusing, she doubled down. Well, seeing all the great reviews are fine- I guess this one "colored girl" just didn't feel that great after this negative treatment; even after trying to voice my concerns days later, I was shot down by Amy as if 'I'm the problem for not getting their way of doing things'- not her quote, just my translation.... However , I'm so disappointed with the customer service/receptionist you come in contact with. Today I had a hair appointment set for 2:30 in Peddler's Village. No one was there !!! I went for my first haircut in Oct 2019 and the cost of the haircut was $50, and then went back 5 wks later and was charged $55 (with no prior notification of rate changes). I went back for 3rd haircut in Jan (5 wks from previous haircut) and was told the haircut was now $60!!! Ridiculous! I did not want to pay the $60, and the person at the desk called someone responsible for rates. I was told it was a mistake and that it should be $55. Received a voicemail later the same day from supervisor and was told after talking with the owner the rate is $60 moving forward. Bye Bye DJW!! read more

I'm so grateful for David and his incredible staff. I wanted to do something extra special for my mom on her birthday. David put me in touch with Ashley, who gave me so many great options. I told him I wanted her to feel luxurious and pampered, and I knew I chose exactly the right place to make it happen! She got there and was escorted upstairs to order lunch and get a massage. When she was finished with her massage, her lunch was waiting there for her. She also got to enjoy the steam room and hair treatments. The staff at David Witchell's will treat you like a god/goddess. They put so much pride and passion into what they do. I've been going there for years for my own hair, and they have always just been the best. So deserving of 5 stars and more!!! read more

I can not say enough good things about this salon/spa!!! From the moment you walk in and smell the delicious aroma to all the friendly faces and smiles from everyone who is working there. My husband and I were in town for a wedding and he needed a haircut, they fit us in without an appointment! Then David himself asked if I wanted a makeup makeover, of course I said yes! I next had a wonderful microdermabrasion and my skin never felt or looked better! They did my makeup next and blew out my hair! I felt so beautiful and pampered I made an appointment for hair and makeup the next day for the wedding! I bought several of his products and my skin feels the best it has in years! It's not often that you bring a photo of a hairstyle to your stylist and they actually get it right. No so at DWJ salon same cut as in the photo with some needed adjustments based on my hair structure. Result, I love my hair! David and Jade collaborated to create a perfect cut. And the color....Jade nailed it! I have a new respect for stylists, well these stylists. Watching David walk Jade through this style, I have thick, multi-textured hair with a mind of its own, was like watching an artist and his student His patience, encouragement and confidence in her ability was nice to watch. And my wirey brows.....they tamed them and shaped them and colored them and I left the salon with a very put together look! Went for massages with family after Thanksgiving. The massage was fine. However, the women's dressing area and lounge is way, way undersized for the number of clients - only space for a few people. in addition, one group of customers decided it was appropriate to throw a private party in the lounge complete with wine and snacks and presents - which made it very uncomfortable for anyone in the lounge area not part of the party. When another group took over the steam bath, which is also the only shower in the lounge, I was left sitting on a bench in the locker room for 20 minutes waiting for a shower to open up across the lobby. Overall not a relaxing experience, more like a strip mall massage spot than a luxury spa. Pretty place, but only go on a really slow day or if you don't want a shower after your massage. read more

I get the best cuts from her and she is always ready to help when I want to change my style, whether it be color, or cut, etc....When she was out of town, another stylist cut and colored my hair (Arlene) and she was phenomenal as well.
