Rose City Smiles is two blocks from my house, and it seemed highly rated, so I called to schedule an appointment. I wasn't able to get through, so after several attempts to catch them by phone I just left my phone number and asked them to call me, which they eventually did. I thought "Wow, they must be really busy! That's a good sign!" They were really interested in my insurance info -- like REALLY interested -- but they didn't seem all that interested in what was bringing me in for a visit. My employer just changed dental insurance providers, so I had to do some sleuthing to get all the policy info they wanted, but I got it. I tried calling them to give them the information they had asked for and, AGAIN, I couldn't get a real person on the phone. I don't like leaving things like dental plan information in a recording, so I decided I'd walk over to give it to them in person since it's only two blocks away. As it happens, on two separate days, in the middle of the day, in the middle of their alleged hours of operation, there was nobody there. The building itself looked deserted and questionably maintained, the parking lot was empty, and the door was locked. Does that seem weird to you? It did to me. The glaring disconnect between that reality and the string of improbably glowing reviews reinforced my sense that there's something dodgy/sketchy/weird about this place. THEN -- and this was the last straw for me -- they texted me LESS THAN 24 hours before my appointment to cancel, claiming that the receptionist had had her wisdom teeth out. Yeah, well, fine, it's not the receptionist I really need to see; it's the dentist -- the dentist who never seems to be in the office. In any case, the combination of never being able to get anyone by phone, the deserted/abandoned appearance of their office, and having my appointment canceled LESS THAN 24 hours before I was supposed to go in (after I had taken time off work to go) has left a VERY bad taste in my mouth. This place seems like anything but a thriving practice, and I'll be going elsewhere for my dental care.

I had already told them my insurance was depleted for the year. I got the run around when asking why and never got an answer I was satisfied with. Oh, and the temp crown yeah that fell out about an hour later. I was told this place works well with my insurance as a union electrical worker. I doubt I'm going back.

After my first visit, I can confidently say the positive reviews are well-deserved. Dr. Sype is down-to-earth, honest, caring, and professional. He personally cleaned my teeth instead of having a hygienist do it, and it was hands down the best cleaning I've ever had. He's the only dentist I've met who genuinely made me feel like he cares about his patients, rather than just focusing on making a profit. I only wish they had a fancier X-ray machine like some other places so I didn't have to bite down on a piece of sharp metal for pictures. I am never a fan of that and it was the only uncomfortable part of my visit.

If you know your process is to refer a patient to endo for a root canal and per your company policy your general dentist does the crown- you close the referral loop and get your patient schedule for the crown. If you tell a patient they need a referral in February for endo/ you get it sent out in February. Not in APRIL. To then never call to schedule the restoration appointment. So a month later I'm calling because why has this not been done yet? I work in the medical field. I know how referrals are supposed to work. They blamed the office they referred too. Then tell me while I have temporary filling I can't get in until July. Say they'll call me back to work something out. To once again drop the ball and not call back. I'm filing a report with the insurance commission. Why am I paying for monthly dental insurance when you can't even get me in to be seen? On top of it my insurance ends in June. At this point they're essentially stealing my money. Oh and they did not make me aware of the cost share involved with my root canal ahead of time. So that was a $200 unexpected surprise. ---- Update: I sent this to the member services email below. They forwarded my email to the office manager at this location. I'm saying that as respectful as possible. She also went to say "we fully treated your tooth, a crown is separate from a root canal. Not all teeth that have root canals need crowns. One- your endo and my assigned general dentist at your office both said this tooth needs a crown. Two a tooth is not fully treated with a temporary filling. It's also getting painful again. They are honestly neglectful to patients. I won't only be reporting Willamette Dental to the insurance commission, I'm lodging a complaint with Oregon Board if Dentistry. It's the continued lack of follow up that's the problem.

I booked an appointment for 1:45 that afternoon at the South East office on Stark. I was greeted respectfully and on time. I filled out a few forms and was in treatment room before I knew it. Xrays were taken and reviewed by the Doctor very quickly. Dr Ty explained the treatment plan and his assistant outlined the cost. It was much less expensive than I thought.
