Dr. Brian Corrado is one of my "go-to" colleagues when I need assistance. His insights and calm manner provide the calm that I need with difficult matters. I have never actually written a Yelp review, but I thought it was important that other people have…read moreaccess to this information. I was referred to Dr. Corrado's DBT group because I was working in the area. There were a few things that bothered me right off the bat, but I had been navigating the mental health system for only a short period of time and had never been in DBT, so I figured this things were just standard. I understand that Bethesda is a wealthy area, but the fees were exorbitant. The intake alone for the group was at least $300. Each group costs $130, which is the same that I was paying for individual therapy- out of this $130, my insurance reimbursed me about $20. You need to pay for every group "like a college class," regardless of whether or not you attend and how far in advance you are giving notice (note: insurance does not pay for missed groups). I have been in 2 other group therapies and have never heard a policy like this. Within 6 months, you are probably going to have to miss a couple sessions because of illness, emergency, or just conflicts in life. In essence, you are expected to pay a hefty fee for services that you are not receiving. You do only have to commit to one module at a time (about 8 weeks), but you are committing to pay for 8 weeks without ever trying to treatment, which means that you need to pay for it even if you determine that it's not appropriate. You can do the math to figure out how much money Bethesda Psychological Associates is making off of each group that they run. At the time that I completed my intake with Dr. Corrado, I had been seeing an individual therapist for approximately 4 months and I felt that I had good rapport with her. In this first meeting, Dr. Corrado tried to convince me to switch to him as an individual therapist. I am so glad that I took the time to think about this and did not do it. On three occasions, I contacted Dr. Corrado regarding scheduling. On all 3 occasions, he called my individual therapist back rather than me. I cannot tell you how degrading this felt. I know that some clinicians have an idea that "everything is clinical" and think that people with borderline personality disorder "split" among treatment clinicians, but even Marsha Linehan disagrees with this. I think that in order for treatment to be successful, there needs to be an equal partnership between the therapist and the client- I definitely did not feel like an equal in this relationship. In the end, I decided that this group was not an appropriate fit. I was changing jobs and felt that the commute would be unmanageable. Even though this possibility had been discussed at the beginning of my treatment, I had to fight to be released from my contract. I was able to join another DBT group, where I feel like I have been much more respected. In Dr. Corrado's group if I said a skill didn't work for me, I was basically told that I wasn't trying hard enough. In my new group, if I say that I feel like something isn't working, I feel validated and I'm provided with support and alternatives. I wish I had been in this group from the beginning. This therapist/ group may be appropriate for you, but I would recommend that you look around outside of the Bethesda area for DBT groups before making your decision (all of the DBT groups in the Bethesda area are interconnected through the Metro DBT Consortium). There are groups that are a little bit farther away (Columbia, etc.) that may be a better fit. Most groups are less than 1/2 the cost of the group at the Bethesda Group and do not make clients commit to periods of time. I love that if something comes up, I can miss group with 24 hours notice without having to pay (which is important because insurance does not reimburse for missed groups). I also strongly feel that everyone should have a right to terminate treatment at any time for any reason. If your gut is telling you that this treatment isn't right for you, you shouldn't be financially bound to continue. You should only pay for treatment that you willingly receive. Bottom line: Mental health treatment is very expensive and it is your wellbeing on the line- do your research before making any commitments.

Worst mental health evaluation I have ever received. Where to start? This was back in 2018 and it…read morestill gets my goat. Upon entry to the facility, I was greeted and sat by Norm the NP, only to be immediately left by myself in his office (probably instructed to fill out some forms or BS survey for quick evaluation--as many mental health professionals tend to love to dole out). Shortly thereafter, I was joined in the room by some grad student (still no licensed professional present - Where had NP Jacobowitz gone?) who promptly asked for my life story regarding my mental health history, including very personal details. First of all, I was never asked for consent for a student to sit in--much less sit in, ALONE, without a professional present--so I guess that's on me for not questioning it at the time. Second, how could the professional himself expect to evaluate a patient to whom he'd not yet spoken? It makes no sense. Once lady grad student was done taking down my personal history, Jacobowitz returned to the room to "diagnose" me and offer advice. Advice included drastically altering my then-current medications, encouraging me to be selfish, making me feel like my employer (with whom I held a personal relationship) cared nothing for me, judging my lifestyle, and overall causing me extreme discomfort. I have no idea where the positive reviews prior to mine came from, but I was fooled into seeing this guy after many years of fear caused by similarly heinous psychiatric appointments with ACTUAL doctors. If you've been through this routine, you undoubtedly know how scary it can be to entrust a brand new person with such extremely sensitive and personal aspects of your life. As soon as I left the building I burst into tears. Pretty sure that's a bad sign.

This was an infuriating visit and I will not be returning. I had Covid during my pregnancy and as…read morea result, my OB wanted an ultrasound at 30 weeks and 36 weeks because even if you are recovered from Covid, it can cause issues later in your pregnancy. My OB referred me here after the other MFM practice that I have had my other scans at wasn't able to get me in at 30 weeks. The two stars here go out to Tara who helped me with my paperwork and squeezed me in to get the appointment but that's where the good parts of this visit end. I arrived at my 11:30 appointment a little early. I wasn't seen until 12:15. Yes a long wait, but whatever. I didn't realize that I would be having a full anatomy scan, even though I had one at 20 weeks. I was surprised because I'm not having complications, and my doctor specifically wanted my placenta and growth checked so it unnecessary for the second anatomy scan. If that was the case, the appointment should have started right on time. It was a very lengthy scan. I didn't finish until 12:45. At that point I was ready to see the doctor and get out of there but the ultrasound tech informed me that I would see the nurse practitioner first and then the doctor. Ok but let's wrap it up because at this point I'm exhausted because taught a half day of school, I'm starving because I skipped lunch for this appointment, and I was hoping to take a nap before picking up my daughter from daycare because I had to coach a field hockey game that night. 20 minutes later, I still hadn't seen anyone. I ventured out to the front desk to tell them that it had been over an hour and a half and I needed to be seen. Eventually the nurse practitioner came in but by that time I was frustrated, hungry, and tired. She asked me why my doctor wanted to get the ultrasound if my covid symptoms had cleared up...lady why do I know more about Covid and pregnancy than you do?? I told her why and then she left. Didn't talk to me about the results of my ultrasound, and just said that the doctor was very slow but he was coming. Fast forward to 1:45. I had been at this place for over two hours. I am a pregnant teacher during the pandemic with a toddler. I coach a high school varsity team and we are just starting the season. I am so stressed and overwhelmed by all of these things that having to wait for over two hours to check on the health of my baby, after already having my regular appointment that morning just sent me over the edge. I told the front desk that this was ridiculous and that I needed to leave because I had to pick up my doctor. A doctor was by the front desk and tried to usher me into a room and ask me "why I was there..." WTF??? I told him that I had to leave to pick up my daughter and he told the scheduler to set me up for an arbitrary date of 4 weeks from now. I just left Needless to say 1. I will not be paying for anything from this place 2. I will not be returning. I called my doctor and after they profusely apologized for my experience told me that they would fit me in at my original place and pull some strings with the scheduler. Do yourself a favor and find another practice!
