I understand why and how it's important to strip insulation from scrap wiring and remove inferior fittings from brass. My first decent SLR Camera, purchased with $ I made from cashing in aluminum cans back in the day. Still, for some reason when I roll up on one of these places just to dispose of scrap w no expectation of payment (just want to drop it so it's not simply dumped in a landfill) my anxiety rises. It's a nice crew here, really helpful (albeit a bit suspicious when you don't want payment, just more responsible waste handling). I have also purchased a couple "Burn Barrels" here for only about $10 to handle occasional yard waste. For any kids out there reading this, you really can make some good $ from scrap. Work w your neighbors, whoever. Do them a favor by cleaning up their yard and you may be very surprised by how much you can make for very little effort. There are only SO many resources to go around, recycling materials makes good sense. (Study up on identifying how to grade scrap metal, you will be pleasantly and financially rewarded).
