It doesn't suffer from the over-expensive second hand fever that is sweeping our beloved stores (ahem Brunswick Street), and every time I pick up something and have a look at the price I don't have to immediately put it down and walk away with my head hung. There are always some great retro vases or platters in the window that hark back to a time where lurid orange and brown were chic and big belt buckles were king. Even if I don't end up buying anything, a short trip here is an instant pick me up. The atmosphere is fun, the sales assistants are friendly and the products are very kitsch.

Despite the 500 car spaces it can be hard to find a spot during December and on Pension days. Serviced by escalator and lift, it has all the facilities a shopping centre should provide. Bathrooms. ATM's. Vending machines. If you don't want to deal with Northland then this local shop may be your answer. Personally i find the revolving door of retailers inconsistent, but despite that I come here because its local and easy to get to.

If your after high end designers then Chadstone is your best bet but for designers such as Alannah Hill and Max Mara then Doncaster is a more manageable option.This centre looks bigger then it feels so if your up for a shopping marathon you may feel let down by the size. But for my shopping and entertainment needs Doncaster is fantastic! The new personal shopper suite is perfect for individuals and groups who need a little fashion help, which may be useful in the upcoming party season! While not my speed I can totally appreciate its merits. The main obstacle to shopping bliss is car parking during peak periods, especially December and weekends its every car for itself. To ad insult to injury parking will cost you if you spend more then three hours in the centre. To remedy this you can pay $10 for valet parking and have your car sheltered for you. Doncaster Westfield is my pick for shopping in the Northeastern suburbs.

Northland Shopping Centre is the northern suburbs answer to Eastland, Southland (see the theme…read morethere) and Highpoint (which really should be called Westland don't you think?) It's really just a huge shopping mall. Love them or hate them, at these large malls you will find many of the brands you love, lots of entertainment and food shopping in one place. Spend hours here, or minutes. Either way you will spend. Northland's most recent reinvention see's a new food precinct, extended fashion mall and reinvented food court as well as the revamp of over 300 retail stores. The main chains have stayed on. Coles, Safeway, Myer, Kmart, Lincraft and Hoyts mix with new comers JB Hifi and Target. The mix of fashion, electronics, food, home wares and gift ware is well balanced and the layout while confusing like most large shopping centres, is one level only which limits the chances of your getting lost. Shopping malls will always attract a range of people from the community so I think Northlands reputation is largely undeserved. If you don't like shopping malls you won't like Northland. But if you are looking for a large shopping centre in the northern suburbs then your choices are here and Doncaster, depending on the stores you need.
