Cabin 9. Yes, that floor is sloping downward toward the left.
Fred B.

My wife and I and our two dogs recently spent two nights at cabin #9 at Dardanelle Resort. We have friends who invited us to visit them at their "off the grid" cabin at Kennedy Meadows, but since the kids were inviting others, we thought it may get too crowded, so we decided to find sleeping accommodations nearby. My wife found Dardanelle Resort online and booked a cabin. The resort in located in a beautiful spot in the Stanislaus National Forest and is across the road from a forest service campground of the same name. We checked in at the camp store and the clerk was helpful and friendly. I was glad to see that the store stocked items that guests may need, and there is also a gift shop, a restaurant open on weekends, and for the campers, there are restrooms, token operated showers, and a laundry room. The resort seemed full of people who brought their trailers and motor homes. Upon moving into our cabin, I observed that it had a lot of wear and tear, so I took numerous photographs to document that we did not cause the damage. The resort charges a $100/dog security deposit, although for some reason we were only charged $100 total. They keep 25% of it for a cleaning fee, and the posted rules state that if any dog hair is found on the bed, all of it will be forfeited. One of the teenage girls working in the store verified upon checkout that there was no dog hair on the bed, and the $75 security deposit was credited back to our credit card. After returning from Kennedy Meadows each day, we got a good night's sleep and the bed was comfortable. Like other reviewers have noted, the resort relies on a generator for electrical power. The generator is loud and runs day and night, although they may turn it off late at night. After a while, one tends to tune it out. But I thought the new generators these days, being EPA and C.A.R.B. certified, were quiet in operation. This one reminded me of the one at Boy Scout camp circa 1970. It seems different being in a room off the grid with no TV, radio, cell phone, or internet service. Our cabin didn't even have any reading material. A visitor's guide binder would have been helpful, with information about the resort and activities to do, and places of interest to explore. I love to watch HGTV and its shows about vacation rental fixer uppers. I kept thinking how it would be fun to see our cabin as the subject makeover property on one of those programs. The HGTV contractor and remodeling hosts would probably describe the cabin as a "down to the studs, total gut job," but that is subjective. The cabin may be just fine for many people, and if the resort can get $150/night for it as is, it probably will remain the same. I should note that it does have a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector, fluorescent light bulbs, updated water and gas connector lines, and appears to meet minimum safety codes. I tried to post a few photos of the cabin to give prospective guests an idea of what they will be renting. This resort has a lot of potential and could easily rate more stars with some improvement.

New owners are bringing new energy and services to the Dardanelle Store. The addition of diesel fuel is much appreciated.

North Pines Campground

In short, this is a "maybe" recommendation…read more To preface, I have visited Yosemite National Park many many times, with many many stays at campgrounds, the Yosemite Valley Lodge & The Ahwahnee. My family loves this park so much that my husband & I chose to get married there last year. I think overall this is an okay campground for the most part. It is well located within the valley loop. It is close to some popular hiking routes, is next to Merced river and just down the road from Curry Village. However, a few things to note that didn't make it a 5-Star stay. 1) Customer service - upon entry, we were greeted by two very friendly hosts. Our party had a physically disabled person with handicap plates on the car. One of the hosts let us know that the stall we parked a car in (temporarily) to unload was designated for law enforcement, but okayed us unloading for 10 minutes. We appreciated the info and consideration. Nearing the 10 minute marker another/separate host approached us really quite aggressively, yelling about us breaking the law and that we need to move immediately. We explained the discussion with the prior host we spoke to, but this one kept yelling at us about how our car looked empty (it wasn't) and wouldn't stop yelling at us until we moved. We totally get the technicality of the stall, but we did receive an okay from another host and this guy was just aggressive as hell with no regard to ADA considerations in a very temporary situation. No law enforcement used it the entire time we were there (several days), did 10 minutes kill them to let a disabled guest unload?? It just was not very host like and incredibly unprofessional. Approach would have meant everything. To add to the poor customer service, we were later accused of pushing the limits with our tents and having more than 6 people (we only had 4 people) despite other campsites directly next to us having at the least 8-10 people, who lit fires mid-day, who had on occasion left their fires completely unattended, and who smoked weed and screamed & talked loudly way after noise cutoffs.. yet no host was approaching them about any of that. 2) some campsites were way overgrown with weeds and fallen over tree trunks. 3) no soap in the bathrooms. As a lover of this park who has stayed more times than I can count, the stay this time at North Pines overall was just okay. The lack of customer service and disregard for disabled persons from some of the hosts was something I don't think myself nor my family will soon forget. I've/my family had never been made to feel like that before, especially at a place that wants conservation support and goes through so much to accommodate ADA.

Best campsite at Yosemite!…read more A bit more off the track versus the other campsites, conveniently located near the Mirror Lake trail. Wedged between a river and a creek, and the creek can be waded in. 1/2 mile to Camp Curry with amenities. Bathrooms were clean but lacked soap for hand washing throughout the visit. We were in campsite 504 which is basically the best one. We really lucked out. Creek and river adjacent. Downside is that we had lots of visiting campers, a bit lacking privacy. Bear bins for food storage are plentiful in space and secure.

My resupply on the PCT at Kennedy Meadows turned into a mini vacation that I'll look back fondly on…read morefor years. I took advantage of the shuttle they run from Sonora pass to the resort. I called to confirm the pickup time, and it was right on schedule. The guy driving the van was filling in for the usual driver, but he was professional and shared some cool facts about the area. At the resort he pointed me towards the designated hiker hangout area and let me know where the front desk was so I could work out accommodations. I had my heart set on a cabin to nurse my chewed up feet and wait for my replacement shoes to arrive via FedEx, but they were totally booked up. The woman at the front desk was awesome though and told me she'd put me in an empty dorm and try to let me have it to myself as long as possible. Picking up my resupply at the general store was easy, and the hiker area was convenient for repacking my bag. The general store had a great selection of all the typical hiker foods, and tons of great snacks. Laundry was a little chaotic because people (workers and hikers) were leaving their finished loads in the machines for ages, but eventually all my chores were done and I was able to relax in the restaurant. There was only one server working but she was friendly and kicking butt. The burger made with their own beef was great. After retiring to my dorm to kill many hours using the strong WiFi, I came back down to the restaurant seeking dinner. The days they offer prime rib are a bit of a madhouse because people travel specifically for the occasion. I couldn't get the attention of any server so I went back to my room. I came back closer to closing and was able to awkwardly shuffle in. The prime rib dinner was massive and pretty good. Even with my hiker hunger I wasn't able to finish it. The generator is LOUD, but you generally get used to it. When it slams off at night the silence is welcomed but jarring. The WiFi still works though. The next morning the restaurant was bustling for breakfast. It always seems like there's never quite enough servers, but that's not surprising considering it's a remote resort. I signed up for one of the short trail rides for a very reasonable $35. I turned out to be the only guest taking that particular ride, which was fun if not a little awkward. The guide was extremely professional and did a good job giving me directions and keeping an eye on how my saddle was positioned and how my horse was behaving. It was a beautiful short ride with a little bit of surprising rocky terrain and creek crossings. The rest of my second day at KM was spent in the saloon waiting for my shoes to arrive. Even though they recommend UPS, FedEx managed to arrive on schedule and my feet were saved. The bar had a great vibe with its strictly western jukebox and friendly barkeep. Dinner on a weekday was much less chaotic, and the ribeye was delicious. The next morning the shuttle driver struck a deal to take someone to a nearby town, so the shuttle was off schedule. Luckily the backpackers spread the word amongst ourselves and after sending a package home with the front desk, I wound up back at Sonora pass in the morning as planned, probably a few pounds heavier. I highly recommend Kennedy Meadows as a resupply and zero spot. They're extremely honest and upfront about how much everything they offer costs, and I didn't feel looked down on for being a smelly hiker. It's a beautiful area, and I plan on coming back for a vacation someday and getting my hands on one of those cabins!

I just thought it was fun since we usually went with a few other families that had kids around my age. We'd caravan from LA to Cachuma, Hemet, somewhere along the King's River or Yosemite and end up in some overflow area because everyone had to work all day Friday. We'd set up tents, eat kalbi and watermelon, fish, swim and just wander around whatever body of water we were near looking at bugs and weird leaves and collecting rocks. Inevitably, the kids would end up dirty and sunburned and we'd almost never catch any fish. Still, even after being cranky the whole way home, whenever my parents told us we would be camping over another holiday weekend, we'd get excited and start counting down the days. Recently, I got a chance to go to Kennedy Meadow. Prepping for the trip, I realized how much stuff my parents had to do for a whole family but, again, I counted down the days until it was time to go. We camped right by the river at Baker campground and I fell asleep and woke to the sound of running water. We went fishing, we drove up to the Sonora Pass where we got a breathtaking view of the valley below us and managed to get a snowball fight in (I have a good arm). One night, I cooked kalbi and I could almost feel myself back with my mom while she got everything ready for dinner each night, except we had no kimchi. Nostalgia can be overwhelming sometimes. I hope I can go back.
