Different cheesesteak item #1071 in the last five years. This is a very good Berks County cheesesteak. I forgot three things about Berks county cheesesteaks; 1. The people behind the counter are nicer. 2. Most places have their own sauce. 3. Soft rolls. This was a cheesey cheesesteak. The sauce added mushiness but not a lot of flavor. I would like to try this as deep fried cheesesteak. I think a hard shell/roll would add a lot to this cheesesteak. The next morning I mixed my leftover meat, cheese, onions, mushrooms, sauce with eggs and that was darn tasty. The girl behind the counter was so nice I bought a Dan's made tandy cake. read more

Drove past here in the morning and it caught my eye. On my way home after work I decided to stop in and grab something to eat. The location is very clean and neat and the service is prompt. It's a deli so they have all your typical cold and hot subs and sandwiches. They also have fries and other fried foods as well as Hershey's ice cream. I ordered my food and in a few mins it was ready. I ordered a cheese steak with mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and hot peppers. When the food came out I was pleased. My sandwich was delicious and hot. I got sauce on the side as I wasn't sure if I'd like it but I ended up using all of it. Nice little sandwich place right next to BFE. Not that Dan's would be the destination itself, but it certainly does just what it needs to as a sandwich shop. Cheese steaks, hoagies, pirogies, etc. Good food with no flourishes. Another bonus: This is the type of place where you order at a counter, then they bring your food to you (you get your own drink), and then you pay at the counter. I like the fact that there is not place to write a tip into the credit receipt. Places that are not truly full service should not ask you for a tip and Dan's does not. It's a small thing, but only real servers deserve to be tipped after they've given good service. Walking my mayonnaise laden hoagie over to my table with a bottle of ketchup does not count on full service. You're about to see a long review. It will be worth it. As a child, I grew up in Birdsboro, and there was a place in Monocacy called DJ's. DJ's had these cheesesteaks that were mind-blowing and mind-altering. It was goodness. I believe they closed about 28 years ago from this writing. I can still remember the taste. How much of a treat it was for our family to get them. And I remember the goo...it was an orange-grease-like substance that gave the sandwich a particular taste and color. Since DJ's has closed down, I've been sad I could not find ANYTHING like it...ANYWHERE. I cannot even replicate it at home due to the brand of cheese/type of cheese being used being unknown. My search is now over. For any of you that remember DJ's as fondly as I do, Dan's Deli is now the recipient of whatever the @#$% that magical goodness was inside the cheesesteak. I visited my mom and step-dad in the Boyertown area about 1 mile from this place - at least 8 times a year for the last decade, and I've never gotten anything from there. Until yesterday. Yesterday, it all changed. I had been doing well on my fitness program until my brother mentioned the word "cheesesteak". This is the weakness. Everyone knows it. I see on the menu there's an 8", 12", and 16" option. "Go big or go home"....and thus the 16" behemoth was delivered to me within 20 minutes by my brother. I opened it up and immediately recognized the orange tint to the food. The same smell as DJ's as well. I eagerly took a bite and it was magic - the same memories from 28 years earlier hit my taste buds! Then, I realized I had about a foot and a half of cheesesteak to eat. Yes, I devoured the damn thing. One note, I did order the cheesesteak with sauce and onions with extra cheese. This place is about an hour and 20 mins from my house. I will be making the trip up there some Saturday when the wife is out of town, eat the thing in my car, and drive home. It's that good. If Mr. Dan would like to share his secret with me, I'd love that! However, I highly doubt that he will, so I must now go back and order this sandwich like someone who needs a 12 step program in their life. Bravo Dan...Bravo! read more

I had been living in the Boyertown area for 9 years and was passing by last week on the way back from Kutztown University and decided to stop in and give Dan's a try. I am kind of a snob when it comes to good hoagies and usually go to Sonny's in Limerick or the Skippack Italian Market. Dan's makes an excellent hoagie using top notch ingredients and I will be back. Their soups are homemade and very good. They use Conshy Italian Bakery rolls, which is a good jump start in making a decent hoagie. Steak sandwiches would benefit from more beef, but the glaring misstep is the burger to roll ratio...a small burger in an oversized roll never makes a good impression. Exactly what I expected. Came here with my son for a night out. We got the Taco Cheesesteak and the Hamburger Hoagie. Also, we got the Buffalo chicken fries. All 3 were excellent and what we exected. Nice portion sjzes and the bread is so good. Honestly, the rolls make the sub. The staff was friendly and it was a quiet night inside. A few drink choices in their coolers and some chip bags to grab if you care. The average 12 inch sub is under $9 so the prices are easily in line with everywhere else.. a gem in the middle of nowhere and I will be back. read more
