My favorite deli in the city! So lucky to work nearby, I learned about this from several old residents in the neighborhood. This place is highly respected in the community. Nobody says bad things about this place in terms of food quality, customer services, and community consciousness & contribution. I have been getting their pastries, cakes, tarts, sandwiches, and deli food. Oh their coffee is best on the street. Today, I got - Ravioli salad with mushrooms & arugula: This is my favorite. Seasoning is modest, which makes the ingredients' natural rich flavor stand out. Every time I eat this, I appreciate the different wild mushrooms' textures and natural, earthy flavors. So delicate! - Beef Stir fry: First time to try this and loved this! The beef is cut into generous chunk, and was suuuuupeerrr tender. Daniel et Daniel was my first foray into the neighbourhood of Cabbagetown and since they are on Carlton St. below where I'm staying for now, it made sense to check them out. (they are model neighbours too) There's usually a lineup at typical times of the day, and keep in mind that only one person is allowed inside at a time for now. Since I was ready for lunch, I asked for the roasted vegetables and fish to along with it. Check out my pics for details. I didn't really know quantities and ended up with enough to have a second meal later in the day. The quality was excellent with everything cooked to perfection. My order would have been good for two and came to $28. I was told that their croissants are excellent and coffee decent, although nearby Jet Fuel is the go-to for quality. Why can't all caterers be like Daniel et Daniel? I mean, even at the most basic level. We were doing an event at MaRS and reached out to all four preferred caterers on the list. Two never responded after multiple attempts. One took forever to get back to us and sent a long questionnaire. Laura from Daniel et Daniel made the bidding process super easy. I simply told Laura what we were looking for, and she drafted an estimate immediately, DAYS before the competition. All the food on the menu sounded healthier and more appetizing. As a startup, we needed to have a specific payment structure and guarantee deadline. Laura worked with us on both of those, remaining courteous and professional. Even onsite, the staff was fantastic. With minimal guidance, they executed our order seamlessly. That's one benefit of working with a preferred caterer. Most importantly, the food was phenomenal. Better than most catered food I've had in the US. My personal favorites were the chia pudding for breakfast and melon prosciutto cubes for the reception. If you're looking for a caterer in Toronto and especially at MaRS, I'd highly recommend Daniel et Daniel. I can't speak about any of the other sales reps, but Laura demonstrated top-notch customer service, response time, and foresight into what clients need. I was supposed to book catering from Pickle Barrel 24 hours ahead but I forgot to do it. I frantically called a few other catering shops but they all require 24 hours ahead. Macaron Day TO I have evaluated macarons from the following establishments: Petit Thuet, Bobbette and Belle, Daniel et Daniel, Butter Avenue, Nadege, Moroco Chocolat, Ruelo Patisserie, and La Bamboche. Each location was graded on their atmosphere, service, selection, packaging, and of course, macarons. Please check out my profile for reviews of the other locations. Daniel et Daniel Location: 248 Carlton St. (On the corner of Carlton and Parliament, take streetcar eat from College Station). Slightly off the beaten path in downtown Toronto. Street parking available. Atmosphere: No sit down, tiny little bakery shop right on the corner. Dark interiors. Selection: Small with many of the macarons being brightly and unnaturally coloured. Many rows of differing shades of colour but we were told they were the same flavours. Service: Service was okay, friendly staff behind the counter but they were unknowledgeable about their macaron flavours. Packaging: I asked for a little box to put my two macrons and was given an adorable little "boxy-bag". Perfect size and rigid enough to put in your purse without crushing the product! Macaron: Having heard lovely things about Daniel et Daniel's catering and lunches, looked forward to trying their macarons but was highly disappointed. First of all, the flavour was simply orange, not blood orange. Secondly, both the orange and pistachio macarons I had were inconsistently made. Parts of the innards were soft, but other parts were chewy and gave me the "peanut butter on the roof of your mouth" texture. The shell of both were visably bumpy, an indication that their flour was not ground enough or not strained enough. The flavour of the orange was too strong, while the pistachio was too light. Each macaron was tiny and cost $1.50 each. Now I know why. Conclusion: I do not think I would go out of my way to Daniel et Daniel, and certainly not for their macarons. Though I would not intentionally avoid them, the experience was not a particularly impressive one. I give Daniel et Daniel a C. My final thoughts: Out of all the macarons and locations I've tried (and ensuring to cleanse my palette with water after each bite), the top two contenders have to be Ruelo and Butter Avenue. Both establishments made macaroons their specialty and both execute them incredibly well. You honestly cannot go wrong with either of them. Nadege is a good alternative and if you're looking for a dine-in experience to try other nibblets. La Bamboche is nice on the go. Moroco Chocolate and Bobbette and Belle are also both worthy choices. I would avoid Daniel et Daniel or Petit Thuet though I heard good things about their other ventures and products (macarons are definitely not their forte). read more

Yelp tells me this place is a lot more than I thought it was! I've only used the takeout side of things, but having tasted it, I would gladly let them cater my events. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Once I stopped by wanting some assorted treats from my friend's birthday. I simply named my price, the occasion and what kind of tastes I was looking for and from that a worker assembled a beautiful box for me! It all came to just a few cents under what I has specified. He tied it with curly ribbon. Amazing. Everything he included was delightful and won over the crowd! I've also had the creme brulee to go. It was soso good even though it did not have the freshest of crackly, sugar tops. All the flavours were there along with a little goosberry on top! They charge maybe a dollar extra because you're taking an actual ramekin with you but if you return it, you get the money back. Otherwise, keep the ramekin- everyone wins! This place offers some of the best catering in the city, and also a little to-go counter where one can come in and grab some pastries or some of their pre-made salads or quiches. This place is my one stop shop if I need some extras for a dinner party. Everyone has those moments when you don't want to cook EVERYTHING from scratch, and D et D's sides, extras and desserts can easily slide in undetected. Do I actually pretend to have made their delish goodies? Nah. I just don't mention it. After all, I usually have made most of the dinner. But, if you want to pull a full-on Mrs. Doubtfire and impress someone, go for it. In this instance, I recommend their Beof Bourguignon. The pricing is reasonable and they are open on Christmas Eve, which I must mention because, well, everyone needs to fake bake over the holidays. Recently attended an event catered by Daniel et Daniel and I was definitely impressed! The food was the best I've ever tasted at any of my husband's work related functions (Rosewater, Hart House, ROM). The hors d'oeuvres were not that great ... unfortunately ... but the main meal was quite tasty! Salad was delicious - butternut squash tart with goat cheese. Baby frisee, popped cranberries, honey walnuts and champagne vinaigrette. I had the oven roasted black cod - tender, flaky, plentiful. Needed a little salt - but I eat salty. Entree was served with baby heirloom carrots, haricot vert pave de gratin dauphinois. Dessert was one of the best ... yumm .... meyer lemon cheesecake - minted berry salad, chilled strawberry, and cassis soup. Now, the only reason I know all of this was because each place setting came with a menu - personalized with your name! I took mine home for yelping purposes. Not sure if Daniel et Daniel was also responsible for the wine selection but I was impressed with the white wine choice. I don't normally drink wine but I decided to try a sip and was quite pleased! The white wine reminded me of a sour apple juice - yum. Service was flawless. The decorations were beautiful. Fresh flowers, candles - very pretty! Another Cabbage Town gem! Although it's a little pricey, Daniel et Daniel is a great spot to grab a hot lunch before heading back to the salt mines (aka work). I don't know much about the catering, but for over the counter food they have a great selection. Hot dishes include braised beef short ribs, spring rolls, chicken parmesan, lasagna, chicken chimichangas, etc. etc. There are also cold pastas (the pesto chicken fusili is a personal fave), salads, fruit salads and a ton of pre-made sandwiches and quiches (among other things) in the fridge. There is also always soup - and all hot/cold dishes can be ordered in a large or small container. Items like short ribs are also customizable - you're able to chose how many, and can also mix dishes in one container. The fridge is stacked with different sauces and mustards too, definite plus! Then there are the desserts. Hard to miss, when you walk in the door and the gleaming glass display is practically showcasing sweets like a Miss Teen USA pageant stage. Slight exaggeration maybe... Croissants, danishes, macaroons, the works! They also have displays of prepackaged chocolates, all very unique but equally interested. Jasmine chocolate anyone? I wasn't a fan, but I'm sure someone would like it. Right at the corner of Parliament and Carlton, this is a great spot to mix it up for lunch! read more

We LOVE Daniel et Daniel! Whenever it's our turn to bring dessert to a family do, this is our go-to place. Huge success with the Lemon Chiffon Cake every time and every place we've ever taken it to. Birthday, anniversary, whatever, this is where we go. And they make Parisian Macarons! When I had my 50th, we sourced the cake here, and got a slab cake that they only do for events. Best cake I've ever had! Don't care what it cost, which wasn't unreasonable, it's a reason to throw a party, just to have an excuse to order another slab cake. Can't say enough good about this place! I've only bought from their takeout counter, and boy oh boy is their stuff yummy! I've had the beef bourguignon several times. Rich, super flavourful, and loaded with prime beef. D&D doesn't scrimp on ingredients. No gristly meats here folks. Every bite a winner. The asparagus and snow-pea salad is also a favourite of mine. Crisp and fresh. The other day I also had a baked potato dish, layered with cheese, which was tasty, buttery, totally unhealthy and divine. I can only imagine what it's like when they cater a full spread. We worked with Jake from Daniel and Daniel for our wedding. He was absolutely fantastic! Always responsive, always available, great sense of style for decor, and easy to work with. He focused on the little things that made the night special, like adding edible flowers on the salad that matched our wedding colours, for example. He also made sure the night went perfectly, buying us wine at the end of the night when we ran out, and sticking around to ensure the flow of the wedding was perfect. The food was unbeatable. Everything was so incredible, our guests will remember the food forever. I never remember food from weddings, but people are still commenting on ours and that really means a lot to me. I go here for lunch because it's the only classy and delicious and almost affordable take-out place I know of nearby. I feel very important in there as it's always packed with people you just know make good money (at lunch time). It is quite pricey, though. So I stick to a sandwich and either soup or the smallest little quantity of salad (100g) each time and it comes to about $8. The sandwiches are delish, the soups I have tried have been amazing, too. I had the grilled veggies sandwich. The pea soup is great as is the squash or...something can't remember exactly. I tried the rice pudding and it was to die for. However, I have yet to find a salad that I have liked, surprisingly. As a (mostly) vegetarian, I get excited by yummy salads, but some of the most delicious looking ones have been mediocre at best. I tried the swiss chard one (and I love swiss chard generally) and I couldn't even finish it. I tried 2 more which I forget now but they weren't good, either. I used to have the very good fortune of working in the same neighborhood as Daniel et Daniel, a wonderful source for gourmet catering and cold and hot dishes to go. A sign of a great swanky party is a spread that features tarts with the signature "Daniel et Daniel" logo on chocolate wafers. If I see one of those, I know I'm in trouble. They are happy to work with your budget and find a spread that works for you, whether it be desserts or a sit down meal. Their food shop in Cabbagetown is an especially nice treat if you're in the neighborhood. Gourmet sandwiches come prewrapped out of the cold case, freshly made and served on a six inch length of french stick bread. Veggies and goat cheese, chicken and tzatziki and others are usually available throughout the day (although they do sell out on busy afternoon). Specialty bottled drinks like juices and a single serving bag of Kettle chips will round out your lunch. If you're looking for something different, try one of their cold salads (orzo salad is a personal fave), or grab a chicken chimichanga to go. If you are looking to bring something home for dinner, you can find anything from roast beef to lasagne by the pound at the counter. The only downside is you can't eat in the shop, so if you're just stopping by you will have to eat until you get home (or picnic it up at Riverdale park). They also have a lovely selection of desserts to go, including cakes, tarts and pastries, as well as a lot of import chocolates and sweets. Bon apetit! read more

On the last Friday of the month, work puts on a buffet lunch for everyone in the department. Free Lunch Friday is, of course, my favourite day of the month. The best ones are when it's from Daniel et Daniel. They tend to provide a mixture of healthy stuff and a little less healthy but there's rarely anything that is in any way like junk food. It's good meat, tons of veggies and some kind of starch and always tastes fresh. My all-time favourite was the day we had the bouef bourgignon. I wanted to take the tray home with me! The meal is only a prelude to dessert for me so it's important to note that they know how to do sweet treats. I would quite happily just eat their desserts all day long. They usually give us little 2 bite versions of things but they're so delicious-cheesecakes, brownies, little tarts. I don't think I've ever had a bad dessert from them. Delicious food, but customer service is a disaster. Have been passed over in line before for "regulars" who just walked in. Staff always seems confused and frazzled - there is either one overworked person behind the counter or five people getting in each other's way. It seems to have very high turnover if the frequent presence of a hiring sign in the window is any indication. Again, the food is delicious and the number of specialty groceries they have available in such a small space is impressive. But the entire experience of ordering is so convoluted and unpleasant that I've had to walk out without being served more than once. read more

Even though the food is amazing, I refuse to stand in line for 20 Minutes to be ignored when it is my turn and passed up for others who have just walked in. Highly disappointed with the timing of this company. We ordered a cake 1 week in advance. The told us that it would be ready at 7:30.....we got here at 7:30 to find out they hadn't finished it. i've tried their catering several times; also tried some handmade chocolates that they sell at the store front. catering menu is extensive - if you visit their webpage they have many cuisines and options, offering packages or separate entrees. their food is really good - the presentation is neat, taste is above average, and it is consistently fresh. their target market seems to be on the higher-end side, good for fancy occasions. i especially enjoyed their canapes, as well as their mini dessert selections - their key lime tarts disappeared almost instantly. general census agree, creme brulee wins. read more

Their croissants are so-so, they don't have any traditional French pastry, it's way too north American for my taste and they are not even open on Sunday and God Forbid you want to get more than 10 croissants, well you can't buy them!! you need to order them in advance LOL. My boss loves this place and frequents it often and will always ask if we want a sandwich. I am a big fan of the turkey and the tuna which come on a bun or a croissant and are made daily to grab and go. Their quiches are also very good, especially the quiche lorraine.
