The staff is completely unprofessional and absolutely do not care about your well being. One AA group was offered per day. Zero therapy. The rest of the day you are allowed only to walk around the perimeter of the building, watch DVD's and smoke cigarettes (a habit I had quit, but picked back up there since it's the only time outside, and sheer frustration). They mistook me for another patient with the same first name, gave me incorrect medication and I was scolded for not attending her group meetings before they realized I was not her. They drugged me up with sedatives to the point I could hardly walk straight. I finally refused the meds to get my mind clear and checked myself out of the program. I had to advocate for myself in a very vulnerable state. Frightening. I am still sober since leaving. Most of the other patients had been there several times, many only returning due to homelessness and needed food & shelter due to it being a hard winter. Used needles were found under mattresses. I was only given one thin blanket in the dead of winter. Strip searched and forced to shower in front of a staff member. You have no access to contact friends or family. If you do get to use a phone, hope you have a number memorized since they do not allow access to your cell phone or belongings. Your calls are monitored by a staff member, IF you get to make a call. Many of my belongings were stolen. Zero privacy. Horrible lack of communication and follow through between staff members. This is a dangerous and unprofessional facility. Avoid at all cost.

She initially ignored me (assumed the best and thought she hadn't heard me)- so I asked again. She said rudely and with attitude- I'm sure they'll print you more. I said I under that but these have all my in, may you please assist me. She huffed. And did nothing. So I was struggling to get them. So I stood up and inquired with another nurse, who said, "Just wait"- - then the doctor came in and the first gal got them and threw them on the chair as she looked me dead in the eye! I've never been in so much pain and treated so poorly! Then after seeing the doctor who ordered pain meds and X-rays. Sent me next door to await some pain meds. That nurse said don't sit there and pointed across the way. Once seated she said you can come back or just sit there that's fine as she rolled her eyes and made a sye- UGH!!!

It took me a month to actually get an appointment because these people never pick up the phone and never call you back. I repeatedly said in my voicemails to call back during the afternoon when I'm available to answer, and then they'd only call me back during the mornings. Finally, when I went in the other day, one person was especially rude and passive-aggressive. She makes you feel like a problem and a nuisance for having simple scheduling needs (afternoons vs mornings, and having a job where you sometimes have a whole day you can't leave.) What I find hilarious is she has flyers by the desk advertising her services as a realtor--as if anyone would willingly interact with her another moment after the way she treats you! The staff clearly doesn't want to be there, and they have quite a negative reputation, so I'm not sure why Dignity doesn't do something. The therapists are fantastic, and that's the only reason I'm willing to come back.

As soon as I do get to a live person they immediately interrupt to start asking questions I can't answer, such as "what kind of therapy?" Well all I've been told is physical therapy, that is what my doctor said and that is what the referral says. They do not understand that I have not been told a particular type of therapy because THEY DO NOT LISTEN, they just try to rush you through. They could look at the referral to see if there is an explanation of a type of therapy, but I have not seen that on the referral. I was actually told "you are not the only patient", and "do you want to leave a message for the scheduling coordinator." When I said yes, the woman hung up on me instead of putting me through to a voicemail. When I immediately called back I was told "You already have an appointment". How could that be when I never scheduled with them? The appointment they stated I already have is at the same time I'm schedule for an MRI. At this point I'm giving up on getting physical therapy and turning to friends and YouTube for answers and advice Never mind the pain I deal with and the difficulties walking. What a sad statement for a medical office!

The plan was for us to find a house sitter in CA, put my private practice on hold (for an indefinite number of months), and then become Henry's full time caregiver, protector, and lifeline while he was slowly recovering within a scrupulously sanitized, sterile environment after his immune system had been completely wiped out. I was terrified of watching him go through this process, and I was especially feeling ill-equipped to succeed in such a perilous "life and death" situation/assignment. I pictured that, under duress, in a medical crisis when we were living all alone, 8 miles away from the nearest hospital, my own "red alert" reactions would cause me to exponentially exacerbate the problem instead of being a calm, steady, effectively caring presence. Just thinking about this possibility triggered a flood of flight and freeze signals associated with severe anticipatory PTSD. So, I tried several of the biofeedback options offered by Santa Cruz Neurofeedback Center after an initial individualized brain mapping session. I discovered that a technique which involves working to subtly control the volume and clarity of a piece of music, while holding the corresponding intent to modify my paralyzing reactions in anticipation of specific situations, actually did allow me to gradually "reset and self-regulate" even when focusing upon the most dreadful possibilities. My biofeedback assignment was to experiment with feeling into "finding" a center point inside which was a combination of "calm", "intentional", "highly focused and aware", but "lacking any sense of effort". As I managed to stumble upon an internal approximation of that designated combination, this, then, naturally lit up certain parts of my brain which were correlated with those attributes. In turn, when the necessary parts of my brain lit up (painlessly connected to electrode sensors), this somehow caused the music I was hearing through headphones to become less discordant. Rather than stopping and starting, or becoming almost inaudible, the musical soundtrack played smoothly and optimally, subliminally training my brain to progressively "dial in" a desired set point - something which I don't think I would have ever fine-tuned this well, or this easily, in a simply rational or a more willful way. These results gave me a lot of comfort and encouragement, and also, as a bonus side effect, I was able to achieve much deeper, more visceral benefits from my lifelong meditation and mindfulness practices - even though I had been pretty successfully working with these methods for many decades - just with less dramatic progress. Throughout this biofeedback treatment process, I recurrently observed how reimagining and then experientially implementing some familiar, lifelong spiritual approaches and concepts assisted me very practically in achieving our targeted treatment goals while also opening new doors and windows into some other positive, but entirely unanticipated insights and breakthroughs. Henry had a brain tumor removed which neurologically impacted regions related to balance, impulse control, executive function, and judgment as well as something like the breakdown of his Wake/Dream barrier. However, he was still able to tap into an observer self - and sometimes capable of acknowledging these kinds of deficits, not just experiencing the consequences. One benefit he gained from regular Neurofeedback sessions included an empowering sense of exercising clear intent and agency during a time when he was terrified of losing these capacities. He set a goal of actively working toward "shifting his relationship with" increasingly intrusive altered states that caused him to see, hear, and sense non-consensual phenomena as if they were physically present. Henry described a reduction in his anxiety whenever the Neurofeedback process mirrored his capacity to identify this type of intention and then offered measurable evidence of progress (i.e. when what happened on the training screen during a session visibly responded to his intent). His mood responded positively to the musical component of his customized protocols as well which utilized a long list of his all time favorite songs. As an LMFT, I have also referred many clients to Santa Cruz Neurofeedback to facilitate everything from more effective management of chronic anxiety to better addressing ADHD symptoms or otherwise enhancing variants of intentional self-regulation which significantly benefit mood stabilization, better focus, or concentration. There are numerous other potential benefits - plus Langdon, Aimee, and their whole treatment team are highly skilled, delightful people with whom to collaborate.
