This review is about my recent experience with attempting to see Sex, Lies and Harold Pinter. I…read morearrived to the theatre only to find out that the director had decided to cancel the show and turn it into a dress rehersel. This is information you need to let people know earlier in the day not wait until they waste their time and gas money and arrive at the box office. The girl running the box office was apoigetic and nice. Someone associated from the production was trying to have the people that did buy tickets be able to sit through the rehersal since it would be a full run-through. He later told me that he was overruled and it was a no go. I did receive a refund, but even the refund doesn't cover the price of gas that was spent and sitting in traffic driving there and driving back. Not to mention there are different things I could have done with my day if i wasn't going to attend this show. Astronomical unprofessionalism and zero regard for the audience's time and frankly money. If you have already purchased tickets to one of their performances I highly recommend that you confirm if the show is still going on so your time isn't wasted. I have to say out of all of the plays I have seen in LA this is one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I won't be going to any future plays put on by this production company. Do better. This is pretty disgusting.

The Iranian-American playwright Houshang Touzie and his production company, Work Shop 79, are presenting his latest play at Odyssey this weekend, and I attended their rehearsal last night to be part of it. What I love most about Odyssey is that every seat is a "good seat." The lighting director and the sound engineer were busy setting everything up, and I sat silently in the darkness, watching everything come together in preparation for what was to come this weekend. Thank you, Odyssey, for welcoming plays from other cultures and languages into your theater.

Now this is one review that's been sitting in my back burner for years, but since I'm still in…read morerecovery from their 10th birthday show, which was held last night, it's time I finally whip this out. Having spent some years in the Rocky Horror community, I've always found Hedwig refreshing. In the long run, it's a better movie -- great music, a deeper story, and more colorful characters -- and I've loved it for years. Yep, I'm a Hed Head. I first saw Rainbow Carnage nearly a decade ago, when Midnight Insanity, the Rocky Horror group I was associated with, still had their own Hedwig shadow cast, the Crypto Homo Rockers (and sadly CHR disbanded before I got the chance to see a show). They were doing a Kick Some Karaoke Ass theme night, with cast and audience members getting up to sing before the show. Even back then, I'd found Rainbow Carnage to be exciting, doing their film justice. Unlike Rocky, where call-outs are usually made putting down the characters, props, set pieces, and songs in the movie, Rainbow Carnage reiterates before their performances, "We love our movie, and please respect it." That's not to say that people still don't yell out their own jokes during the show and get a laugh from the crowd (I giggled like an idiot at the end when someone shouted, "Gentlemen, please, it's after Labor Day." Well, you had to be there). It's thoroughly encouraged that you sing along with the movie, as well. Also unlike the majority of Rocky shadow casts, due to the frequent costume changes in Hedwig, Rainbow Carnage uses multiple actors to play the roles. So you could see one person play Hedwig during "Tear Me Down," a different person as Hedwig for "Origin of Love," and then the first actor again for "Sugar Daddy." For the record, the girl whom I always considered a kick-ass Yitzhak some years back is now a bad-ass Hedwig. She's got the blocking down perfectly. As others have mentioned it is an interactive show. During the scene between Tommy Gnosis and Hedwig in her trailer, cast members drape a clothes line over the audience with slips, stockings, and shirts sliding across their faces like Hedwig and Tommy slipping through a labyrinth of laundry. During "Sugar Daddy," they toss out baggies of Gummi Bears, and YES, someone DOES get a "carwash, ladies and gentlemen!" Unlike Rocky they won't be squirting water at you during any scene (not that any scene really calls for it), so you can rest easy there. I just wish Rainbow Carnage held more shows throughout the year. I remember when they went down to performing quarterly and I was pretty bummed. Well, here's to another 10 years for the longest running Hedwig cast in the world!

Sigh. At least the pre-show entertainment was fairly good this time. The shadowcast this time seemed to feature more females and they actually got a black guy for the Sargent Luther Robinson role! They added a scene they never shadowcasted before which made me happy. Overall, I had another great time.

A hidden gem. Let's jump right into this review…read more The Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles is a renowned, non-profit theater known for intimate productions of classic and contemporary plays, new works, and educational programs. Two main spaces, the 500-seat Gil Cates Theater and the smaller Audrey Skirball-Kenis Theater. My son and I attended a play - Table 17 and sat in the balcony box of the Gil Cates Theater. Box seats $139pp Pros 1. Very nice venue. An intimate space with every seat being a good seat. Great acoustics also. 2. Bathrooms are clean and grounds are well-kept. 3. Small bar area that sells food items and drink, including alcohol. 4. Patio area and seating in the lobby if you arrive early. Doors usually open 1 hour before showtime. Theater doors open 30 minutes before curtain time. Cons 1. Parking can be a challenge but not impossible. Metered street parking. Use the text to pay function because you can add additional time from your phone and receive reminders via text when your time is about to expire. There are also paid parking lots within walking distance. Prices will vary. I was impressed with Geffen Playhouse and will definitely be back. BTW - Table 17 was an amazing play - funny, thought provoking, and an attention grabber.

Great refreshment choices. Parking can be tricky, you can park in the garage next door for pay, or street parking for pay (depending on the hours of the day & day of the week), or you can park in neighborhood street parking (free) couple blocks away. The venue is close by market with food vendors or nearby restaurants and museum. Really enjoy every time I'm here seeing a play.

I would recommend parking in lot number 3 which seems to be the closest. That's in the northeastern part of UCLA, where Sunset and Hilgard meet. Once parked, when you walk out to the street (Charles E Young, I think) just turn right and walk towards the garden of sculptures. Once you see the sculpture garden, make a quick right, McGowan is on the right side of you. Parking is $8 all day. You can park for a couple hours, if that's all you need. That will set you back about $4. The parking station we paid at wasn't working for credit cards, so make sure you have cash on you, just in case. The sound inside the theatre was great. The seating was good too, not too cramped where your legs are (like some theaters). I would go back for another play.

I average a few comments a week about how amazing my 15 year old daughter is and I attribute so much of that to the community, culture, and programming that is built within this theater space. Yes, she has leaned to sing, dance, and act- and well, I might add. For me, more importantly, she has learned grace, pride, to be supportive, understanding, how to work as a team, maturity, respect, acceptance, passion, drive, commitment, belonging, love, determination, grit, resourcefulness, disappointment, and countless skills that will see her through to adulthood. When you ask my daughter why she is willing to devote her Monday nights, after a long day at school and other commitments, to this place, she says, without reservation or hesitation, "Because there's nothing else like it. " My younger daughter, now 8, unlike my older daughter, is shy and reserved- but also loves to sing and dance. This is the only place that I would trust to handle her anxiety, social emotional development, and the delicate nature of doing hard things (facing fears). I've watched Cheryl and her team support so many kinds of needs, including working with a student who was visually impaired. Now there is also Mariana, who is extremely adept at hearing/ seeing students at their core and crafting something that meets them where they are at. When you go an see the shows, you can tell this is a great place. When you stay a bit longer, you see more, and know that what happens there is immeasurable.

Here we are 4 years later and she can't wait for her weekly class. Cheryl has even gone so far as to work with my daughter closely to bring out all sides of her personality and to challenge her to be uncomfortable with characters my daughter would not normally play. What a delight it has been to watch as my daughter grows and stretches her acting chops!
