The booking agent at Picabo insured me that my guide, Zack Mayhew, would pick me up in front of my hotel, Red River Inn, in Stanley, and that he would call me the day before my trip. Zack called me at 8:30 pm the night of the 15th, and basically told me that the river was "blown out", and not enough water to fish it from a drift boat. This was a complete fabrication, as driftboats on the 16th were going down the Salmon River from my vantage point. So, if I wanted to fish on that Monday, I could get in my truck and turn around and drive back down through the valley an hour-and-and-half to rendezvous with him. This is not what I signed up for. I never received any phone calls from the management at Picabo apologizing to me. I'm under the impression they don't even guide on the Salmon River. It is too far north for them. So I was left, after driving from Bend, Oregon, to Stanley, Idaho, with no guide. I called the fly shop myself the following day and got a young man on the phone who tried to make it sound like it was my fault and I misunderstood. Really? He told me he would tell his management staff about me being stranded in Stanley, but I never heard a word back. How sad they couldn't even take the time to reach out to me.
