If you're even thinking about going to Scoops, stop thinking and just GO. This place is not your…read moreaverage ice cream shop -- it's the kind of place that makes you cancel your plans, forget your diet, and seriously consider ordering a second cone... before you even finish the first. Let's talk about the ice cream: I got a scoop of huckleberry and a scoop of rocky road, and I am not exaggerating when I say it was some of the best ice cream I've ever had in my life. The huckleberry was absolutely incredible -- super creamy, packed with real huckleberry flavor, and not overly sweet. It actually tasted like fruit, not fake syrup. If you've never had huckleberry ice cream before, Scoops is the place to try it. You'll be hooked. Then there's the rocky road -- rich, chocolatey, and loaded with gooey marshmallows and crunchy almonds. It's that perfect balance of soft and crunchy, sweet and deep. It's not just a classic flavor done well -- it's a full-on chocolate event in your mouth. The staff were super friendly and patient, even though I asked to sample like four flavors first. (Shoutout to the girl working behind the counter -- you're a real one!) The place was clean, colorful, and had that cozy, small-town charm that makes you feel right at home. Prices were totally reasonable for the quality, and the portion sizes were generous. You really get what you pay for -- and more.

The booking agent at Picabo insured me that my guide, Zack Mayhew, would pick me up in front of my hotel, Red River Inn, in Stanley, and that he would call me the day before my trip. Zack called me at 8:30 pm the night of the 15th, and basically told me that the river was "blown out", and not enough water to fish it from a drift boat. This was a complete fabrication, as driftboats on the 16th were going down the Salmon River from my vantage point. So, if I wanted to fish on that Monday, I could get in my truck and turn around and drive back down through the valley an hour-and-and-half to rendezvous with him. This is not what I signed up for. I never received any phone calls from the management at Picabo apologizing to me. I'm under the impression they don't even guide on the Salmon River. It is too far north for them. So I was left, after driving from Bend, Oregon, to Stanley, Idaho, with no guide. I called the fly shop myself the following day and got a young man on the phone who tried to make it sound like it was my fault and I misunderstood. Really? He told me he would tell his management staff about me being stranded in Stanley, but I never heard a word back. How sad they couldn't even take the time to reach out to me. I would never use them. -Mike M
