We were in raincoats and Gortex shoes, but they could only do so much. We all broke down in tears when we made the turn from Arco de Palacio to Plaza del Obradoiro because there it was, the archcathedral, standing gallantly on our left. We hugged each other, said a prayer, took some photos, got our compostela (certificate), and then looked for a place to eat. From the plaza, we headed down Rúa do Franco and landed at A Taberna do Bispo. There was a long wait to seat our party of seven together, so we ended up on two tables. Champiñones A La Plancha - These griddled button mushrooms were the perfect way to get our veggies in. Boquerones En Vinagre - These were the herbiest anchovies we had during our camino. They were served with green and purple olives. Calamarcitos A La Plancha - Just like the mushrooms and anchovies, these grilled baby squids were served in olive oil with herbs. They were very tender and tasty. Mejillones - We finally got steamed mussels done properly. So much better than the ones we had at Sarria. Solomillo De Terneira Montaditos - These veal tenderloins were awesome. Perfectly seared medium-rare, each was served on bread and topped with shishito pepper. Vieira A La Plancha Con Langostinos - Lovely to look at, heaven to eat - that's how to best describe this dish! Each half-shell scallop had two plump prawns and they were grilled and drizzled with the same olive oil concoction they used in the other dishes. So delicious! The restaurant was elegant-looking and had the vibe of a tourist trap, but we did not regret going here. There were other items on the menu that we could have tried, but we simply would not have been able to finish if we did. Our server was very friendly and had plenty of recommendations, one of which was the scallop. We were so glad we ordered them!

If you are not there early you are waiting, and the line can be long. When you walk in you see a portion of the small bites as well as the steaks and such and they grill much of the food to order. I thoroughly enjoyed the sardines and red peppers with artichoke; the shrimp salmon and a guac spread; the Papatorio's mini burger was one of the best burgers I have ever tasted - deliciously medium; and the roasted potatoes with garlic aioli were abundant and perfectly crispy. The vibe was Spanish and the waiter patient with my limited language. Go there for sure!

However, we got in line like everyone else and waited our nearly an hour wait turn. Mind you, you wait near the bar, so it's not a problem to try a couple local beers... A las, we were seated and waited on promptly. The place was nonstop hustle in every direction. Usually a good sign, no? Steak it is... "was," along with grilled rabbit, and the winner of the evening (in my humble opinion), grilled octopus. Flavorful, tender, delicious! Was it worth the wait? Debatable, but we were generally pleased and would probably return again, and so should you. Prost!

There was still one table available in the very front of the place near the kitchen, a bit away from the packed tables in the main part. As part of our initiation into Galician cuisine we of course had the pulpo a feira (octopus and potatoes drizzled with olive oil and with a paprika spicing), the empanada gallega (a savory pie), our first of many servings of berberechos (cockles), mejillones (mussels), and tried for the first time the delicious navajas (razor clams). Needless to say after our first late lunch feast we had no room for dinner. During the next two weeks we usually came late for lunch after 3 to a room packed with pilgrims - evidently August crowds are the rule - but were also astonished by the efficiency and speed of the staff. We remember being amazed too as Tania, a petite and very friendly attendant, seemed to carry her weight in dishes and cups beautifully balanced into the kitchen. On one evening when we chose to eat dinner in Enxebre instead of in the more formal Dos Reis (we had room and one daily meal as part of our parador arrangement), we enjoyed romantic live Spanish guitar music as the perfect accompaniment to our late night dinner. In the course of our dozen meals (mostly lunch, a few dinners too) we got to know the very friendly and competent maître Mario, who found time to share his tips for the surrounding areas and some local gossip. Alberto and Tania were two of the wonderful attendants we were to see again and again - always friendly and always very efficient even on the busiest of afternoons or evenings. And we learned the meaning of Enxebre, a Galician word for "local, typical" - and if you add "delicious, friendly, cozy," then Enxebre is the perfect name for a place that we'll always remember - both for the delicious regional meals and especially for the wonderfully warm welcome we received upon each visit.

The meal ended with a delectable almond cake. Bottom line: I have no clue in pricing but the food was done well and served with grace.
