That's is a designated smoking area and a shelter if its windy or raining. There is no disabled access and the platform is a lot lower than any train station that l have ever seen so caution when boarding or exiting the train. At the end of the road there is no taxi rank, l did observe a bus stop but the busses don't run that frequent.

It wasn't open mind you, but I appreciate the thought - especially at a place that is so bare to begin with. Gotta love a little surprise bookworm find! There are no snackables or coffee to be had, so if you've got an early morning train to catch, grab something in town before you head over.

There are two platforms, a ticket office and a waiting room. The platforms are partially covered and there are a few benches to sit at. It's a station that could really benefit from a cafe and it's a bit surprising to see an estate agent taking up the space I'd expect a cafe to be in. As small as the station is, I'm sure there are enough travellers for a small cafe to be profitable. Fortunately, there are a cafes and bars not too far away - about a five minute walk if you turn right when you leave the station. If you have a long wait I'd suggest stopping at one of those rather than in the waiting room; it's warm enough and much better than waiting on the platform, but it's not very big and the seats aren't especially comfortable. There is, however, free WiFi.

That's what happened to my family and me in Aviemore in June at the hands of the Strathspey Steam Railway. My brother and sister in law spend a bit of time in Aviemore, and had on several prior occasions brought their two dogs along on the Strathspey Steam Railway dining car lunch service. They had booked and paid our reservations in advance. The day of our experience we boarded the train and were seated in our compartment, dogs at our feet. We were settled in and perusing our menus when our adventure became a nightmare. One of the railway's employees (named Alan), wearing a safety vest, was walking by our compartment when he caught sight of the two dogs sleeping at our feet. He abruptly and rudely told us that the dogs weren't allowed. My brother in law told Alan that he had been in the dining car with the dogs on at least two prior occasions, one just a few weeks before and at least once in 2016. Alan essentially said he didn't care. He said that the dogs could be tied up in another compartment away from the dining car or we could move to a non-dining car (which meant no meal for us). Neither option was acceptable to us. We exited the train, went to the ticket office, and the staff processed a refund for my brother in law (who was treating us). If dogs aren't allowed in the dining car for health reasons, we understand that. Here are our issues: 1. Dogs not being allowed should be explicitly stated in promotional materials. 2. This rule should be consistently enforced. Obviously some employees don't care about enforcement about this rule because my brother and sister in law had at least two prior recent occasions where their dogs were allowed in the dining car. Railway employee Alan decided to be hard-nosed about it on our particular day. 3. Alan could have handled this situation a lot better. As said before, he was rude and harsh while communicating his enforcement of the rule with us. He wasn't even slightly apologetic or empathetic. It left us feeling mistreated. Alan should not be in a role interacting with customers if that is his usual temperament. 4. The office staff also were also not empathetic. They went about their business processing the refund and sent us on our way. Our disappointment would have been obvious to them but is didn't at all feel like they sensed it. We love the Aviemore area and plan to return to the are for many years in the future. But we will never patronize the Strathspey Steam Railway, whose treatment of us was a major fail.

The track route does not provide great views of the mountains . In fact one issue I had was how dirty the windows of the carriage we were travelling in spoilt looking through the window . We also spent a lot of time hanging around at the far terminus before the return journey . It's not a track of many miles . Having the Severn Valley Railway close by and able to make comparison I was underwhelmed .
