Having said that, my work involves a lot of crafty projects and because I don't have time to source elsewhere I buy from here on a monthly basis. Unfortunately the staff are not interested in looking after their loyal clients and would not even consider a discount when I was buying hundreds of pounds worth of materials. I also had issues with dirty fabric I was told would be fine after a wash... Again, not a commercial effort in sight. I think the owners are actually Ghanaian but they stock a variety of fabrics from all over the continent and one thing we do all have in common is great taste in print. You can't beat the colours or designs of this fabric, which is probably why so much of African fashion involves simply swathing the body and head in yards and yards of beautifully rich material and wrapping it in place (possibly with a baby on the back for good measure). Colour is the key and at Afrique Fabriks they really do cater to this requirement. The staff are friendly and professional with a good knowledge of the techniques used to make the different materials they stock. I went the other day with my sister, we were slightly daunted having only bought African material in Nigeria with the strict supervision of market savvy relatives. She saw an incredibly vibrant turquoise cloth with a beautifully intricate terracotta coloured pattern and wanted to buy a small amount, however they only sell material in six or twelve yards, fine if you want to kit out the whole family in Sunday best but a bit much for one person. However it turned out that six yards was only £12, so she took the lot and I'll probably use up the left overs.

And this place is immense. They have such a big range of patterned wax prints - some BEAUTIFUL colours and themes going on. Of all the places I saw in Dalston selling these kinds of fabric, I think this place has the biggest and the best range. And whilst they're expensive (and I think they bring in all the latest designs), I don't think they're THAT expensive. They'll only sell you them in big sizes, but then you can do what you want with the cuttings and snippings. More about my designs later, it's ok, you'll see people walking the streets in them soon. This is a Toys R Us for adults! I went on the hunt today for mini cup cake liners and went in my…read morelocal bakery to ask where I should go. Head straight to the source was my thoughts. My baker lady said, "Party Party, just in Dalston market" so off I trotted. As I approached this vast store firstly I was shocked that I have lived here for 3 years and never actually seen this magical place. Down stairs as you walk in you are greeted by sales staff in themed waist coats, this time of year they have pumpkins all over them. The head fella wears a fez - that automatically gave these guys an extra star, it's not often I get sound advice from a fez but this guy knew his stuff. Downstairs there is this wonderful area filled with party accessories, from balloons to costumes (pretty basic but good value for money) and hats, masks, tinsel, tablecloths, candles the lot! But this wasn't the best of it... anyone who loves to bake needs to come here. Upstairs hidden away is a shop that sells cake accessories, from cutters, to edible glue, to silver balls, cake stands, plastic bride and grooms and more. I was in a rush and only meant to spend a few minutes picking up the liners but walked out with 2 silver cake trays, silver edible balls , cake liners, vanilla extra and icing caps. I want to go back and buy more right now. If you are making a cake, you must spot by here, it's everything you need all under one roof!

And so, through the rain, I ventured over to Stoke Newington to get my next fix: pure 100% cotton yarn! Knit With Attitude is a small and cute shop on Stoke Newington High Street (not far away from the lovely independent Stoke Newington Bookshop). What stands out right away is the counter that is covered with crocheted granny squares. (Reminds me of the guerilla knitting where people decorate lampposts or trees with a colourful skirt.) The front of the shop offers yarns and other knitting supplies, while in the back there seems to be a room where people can actually get together and do some work. (I had a quick glance at their website and it looks like they do offer workshops and courses of all sorts - mental bookmark!) In any case, I found my desperately-needed yarn and I'm now in the process of crocheting my very own beanie hat.

I would give the shop itself 5*'s as friendliness and London don't always go together. However, for people not from the area, be warned that the shop is in a not great section of town. I stepped out of the shop and walked to the street crossing to the left and was mugged. Two persons on a motorbike ran the bike onto the sidewalk nearly running me over and while I attempted to jump out of the way they snatched the phone out of my hands. Talking to the police after the incident and a couple who stopped to help, they informed me that I wasn't in the safest area. As a tourist I am vigilant but I was still accosted. If you go to Knit with Attitude just be aware of your surroundings. I hope my review will help someone else who isn't aware.
