My father ate there 2 days ago. Been in the hospital the last 1.5 days due to salmonella poisoning after eating at Dai Tung in mission. Under cooked general chicken is the culprit. This place and its McAllen location are not good. Clearly unsanitary. Recommend no one take their over 70 family member there. It was a good deal. I took two stars off because of their dishonesty. First, the plate that they advertise as having almonds had peanuts. Then when we went to pay, they tacked on a $1 charge for using a credit card, but they didn't say that first. And the owner is so rude. I go there for one dish that they excel at Kung Pao shrimp. Love the food there and it is clean with good service.

I don't usually like giving bad reviews but the service was really bad and made me not want to go back. The server came up to us once we were seated and simply asked "do you know what you want?" and he then simply gave us the menu. I soon realized he was eating in the table behind us while we decided on our food selection. Food: We ordered the general chow chicken and broccoli beef which didn't disappoint. The general chow chicken was serve as large pieces of chicken which was a first for me. We had ordered the large portions which were sufficient to feed 4 people. Chinese takeout was decidedly the Saturday night dinner objective, which of course then piqued my curiosity. How does South Texas fare with regards to Americanized Chinese cuisine. Not that I love the heck out of Chinese food because, confession time, as a Chinese person, I actually prefer Thai and Vietnamese cuisine - FOR SHAME. We called in a pretty massive order, with the Szechuan bean curd for me (per the owner/phone answerer - it's vegetarian). "Ten minutes" seemed like an underestimation of time and indeed it was, as we had to wait a bit. But during that additional three or five minutes, I observed like 6 groups walk in or out. Sundays are reportedly even busier, so plan accordingly. Ultimately, the bean curd was palatable, although excessively oily - which is very typical of Chinese take out. I did like that it was not overly drowned in sodium (despite the tofu triangles being a deep brown), it actually had a bit of a sweetness. The portion was fairly generous, especially considering no one else would dare touch it - hey more for me. My tummy was angry with me afterwards, but it's always whining about something . . . I think it ended up being like $70 for 10 people (two of whom were tiny children capable of eating a few bites of sesame chicken), so pretty all right! read more

We're new to the valley and are slowly discovering places and figured Dai Tung would be our next great culinary adventure. This, however, was incorrect. We ordered at the restaurant and ended up deciding on the crab Rangoon, almond chicken dinner, and some wonton soup. The almond chicken was (to my surprise) very flavorless. I tried adding soy sauce to brighten up, but it didn't do much. The soup was alright. We both found it strange that the wontons didn't have any meat in them. This is the first time I've ever had wonton soup made this way. The only redeeming part of the meal were the crab rangoons, which were very tasty and prepared perfectly. Sadly, Dai Tung did not measure up to my standard of good Chinese food. We won't be back. read more

We went to Dai Tung on a Sunday night, the places we wanted to go to were closed. Neither Chris, my boyfriend, or my nephew and his girlfriend, had been there. The server seemed like he'd had a long day and was not happy to see us. Although we weren't the last table of the night. We were really low maintenance. My boyfriend and I got the Orange Chicken, which was dry and not very flavorful. The cup of Egg Drop Soup, was pretty yummy. A nice thick consistency, plenty of egg. I missed the peas and carrots, but otherwise good. I don't think I'll be back. The service was not up to what I expect and the food wasn't great. Just a day or so after Christmas I took my family to eat at DaiTung. The food is delicious BUT the restaurant is dirty as far as sticky door handles going in, sticky table tops, sticky Soy Sauce bottles & sticky Hot Sauce containers. So I go to the restroom to wash my hands and there is NO SOAP. At the time of payment I go up to the cashier which was not the usual tall skinny Asian man that normally is there, but it was a short Asian man instead. I told him that someone needed to go outside the restaurant doors (2) of them and scrub off the nasty sticky handles. I told him about the table & bottle & container being sticky & how NO SOAP in restroom. He ignored me and used my card to pay and told me "Goodbye". Wasn't my favorite place. My son-in-law was in town to see his hospitalized father and I was looking for a decent Chinese food place to take him. We didn't want a buffet. I searched Yelp for help and saw that Dai Tung had fairly high ratings, so we went there. We were seated immediately as there weren't many diners there for a Sunday night. Our drink orders were taken and served quickly...iced tea. We ordered a small bowl of won ton soup each. We are used to this soup being cooked in a clear or a chicken broth but their won ton soup was made wth a beef broth...strange. The soup contained two wan ton's. The wan ton's were huge and totally empty. Also strange. I ordered Sesame Chicken and D. ordered Triple Delight with Garlic sauce. Our orders came out fairly quickly and each plate was a HUGE serving. My sesame chicken was served with a small portion of nicely steamed broccoli. My son-in law seemed to enjoy his Triple Delight and fairly swiftly consumed half of the plate. My Sesame Chicken was nicely prepared but I do enjoy a bit of a crunch to this meal and there was none. The chicken was very tender and the sauce was tasty. I was only able to consume a third of it and it took me another two meals to finish this dish at home. Son-In-law ate the remaining half of his at lunch the following afternoon. All in all it was a pleasant experience but I had much rather have been served a chicken flavored wan ton soup and HALF of my chicken dish served with some crunchy won tons and a spring roll. I have been here several times and the food is always fresh and hot! Today was no exception. I ordered the pan fried noodles with shrimp. The veggies were cooked perfectly and had good flavor. The shrimp was a bit over cooked but not bad. We also had the general chows chicken which was excellent! He held my order from being made because he said the lady that took it did not tell me it was dai-tung mission. He stated he called me to confirm and since I didn't answer he did not make my order. I often pondered to myself what made this establishment so great for the majority of my time writing this review. Even though this restaurant may seem mediocre the memories you will make here are ones that last a life time. Not only is the food amazing the waiters are always friendly. I would describe the atmosphere to be like a nice but uncomfortable family dinner. The food here is delicious and the customer service is great. Although the order may take long the food is worth the wait. The amount of authentic Chinese food in the Valley is abysmal, but Dai Tung offers Chinese food like no other. We all know that food alone can not hold a business afloat so they rely heavily on their great service. This may account for why this place has stand the test of time even though the demand for Chinese food is low.I personally would recommend the Egg Drop Soup along with the Black noodles. Over all Dai Tung is not only a restaurant but an experience. 9.5/10 Would come again. read more
