As I hunt for the ultimate Asian / Indian restaurant in Munich, I have learnt, be prepared to be disappointed, specially with a name like Mataji, as it means Mother in Hindi and, I am sorry, nothing comes close to my mums kitchen lol. This place did surprise me and, I really enjoyed my meal here and, will definitely come back. The owner is apparently Bengali and that would also mean a Bengali chef in the kitchen. Bengali chefs are renowned for great flavour in India and, this place had it in bucket fulls :-)) The food was mild and well suited for the local palette but, the flavour was great. I would give the food here 4.5 stars. I ordered the Klassik Thali from the menu (a variety of curries and condiments to try). It's always a good way to sample the cooking across a range of dishes, when in an Indian restaurant. It also gives you a good sense of the place. I asked for Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Korma. They included some Raita, Salad and a vegetable curry. The thali came with rice and naan bread. This is the first restaurant in Munich where I devoured the Naan bread, it was so good - 5 stars for the naan :-) The curries were really well flavoured and the meat was of good quality. I enjoyed every spoonful. There was nothing about the meal I did not like. They have an extensive menu with most classic North Indian dishes and some vegan & plenty of vegetarian dishes also. The rassogull for dessert was my first in Munich and, I had high expectations. Bengalis are the dessert kings of India and, whilst this one was ok, it could have been better and more squeaky, which makes it soft and chewy. The mango lassi here was to die for and, I absolutely loved it - 5 stars for the mango lassi. All in all a great experience. Service was friendly and, the lady who served me also spoke Hindi, which made selection slightly easier. Food is little more on the expensive side compared to many Indian restaurants but, if they serve quality like this, I would happily pay for it. I am glad I keep persisting and trying new places, once in a while you get lucky :-) a nice choice for Indian food in the neighbourhood.

As I have discovered in the last few months ordering things that are not popular or unusual from Indian restaurants is, a "hit and miss" and I have stopped trying to order things I ate in India. Maybe it is because of lack of demand and not enough practice making it. The dishes like Palak Paneer, Dal Makhani, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Roganjosh and others are always excellent and the naan and rotis are served nice and hot and taste fabulous. The service has improved significantly and it has made for a great experience in recent times. We go back here regularly and have enjoyed it each and every time. I also discovered they make a proper Indian Chai here that is, spicy, milky, sickly sweet and served super hot....wunderbar :-) took me back to the streets of Mumbai instantly :-))

It came oh-so-close to earning my first 5-star, but since their mixed grill plate didn't completely wow me last time (it was still really good), I am only dishing out 4.5-stars. Spiced just right, their currys (and other sauces) are definitely making me hungry in front of my laptop right about now.. Add some good dips and decent naan, non over-the-top decor and friendly servers and you've got the complete package my friend. Dangerous to come here without a reservation, so plan ahead and you'll thank me later.

I do think the dal makhani could have done with several more hours of simmering, but most restaurants do a quick cook on this favorite lentil dish of mine. The wife of the couple I met is from Delhi and she thinks this is the best Indian food in Munich. So does the husband who says he gets this chicken dish every time he comes in. I can see why. I am flying home tomorrow otherwise I would get this dish tomorrow. Don't let the restaurant's location next store to a Shell station dissuade you from trying it. It is a local gem.

And when I mean zero taste, it was so bland that I had to put a ton of salt on the food to make it taste palatable. I don't think that the crook ever tried the food that he was serving before he put it out. That being said, and unfortunately, I will no longer go there as a paying customer. As this place was not on Yelp, I have added it. The location is great and the place itself is nice and airy with, lots of windows and plenty of outdoor seating, something the other place was missing. The menu is the same as the other Dhaba. I call this place Dhaba2 although the name is the same on both places. The service is very friendly and welcoming, something I have always loved about Dhaba. The food is excellent and of the same high quality I have been used to, for the last two years. Our starter was good and my main of Lamb Boti Masala was excellent. The fresh roti out of the tandoor was also very good. For dessert we tried mung bean halava (a new addition to the menu) and it was nice too. All in all, for a place that has been open for two weeks, it was an excellent experience. They have a few more finishing touches to do at the restaurant but, a place I would happily come back to again. This is my favourite Indian restaurant in Munich and, the second place did not disappoint. In a way I prefer the layout of this place for the summer months. Well worth a try in my opinion.
