Amazing food and service. Easily best Italian in Lausanne. Highly recommend. Be sure to ask your server for wine recommendations.

My girlfriend and I were recommended this spot by a friend who lives just nearby, as one of the best pizzas in town. Given that we both are extremely found of pizza and that at that point we were living pretty close to it too, we went ahead and stopped to check it out. Oh boy, we were not disappointed. To start off, you will basically hear Italian all the time there. While the staff speaks French and decent English, they communicate between themselves in Italian, with a lot of incoming customers being Italian as well. It's a great sign in general and here it was confirmed. They have a large selection of different pizzas, once again - all for a reasonable price, that are baked on a thin, chewy crust and with an abundance of toppings - basically the way pizza is supposed to be done. They also have an abundance of authentic appetizers while you are waiting for your pizza to arrive and serve you some bread. Overall a great experience! While this place isn't the best Italian or best Pizza of Lausanne in my opinion, it is nonetheless a great find and is definitely one of the best price/quality ratios around. I can but recommend it.

The pizza base is tasty, thin but soft, made with olive oil. The tomato sauce is homemade and the mozzarella is very good. It's an original recipe from Napoli. We tried the pizza margherita and one called BioFrat with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella buffalo, basil and oregano. Yum! They have delivery service too. Really a funny restaurant where Italian people sit, eat and chat at the only big table it has. The price is below average and the service is very friendly.

I arrived at the restaurant at 18.10hs not realizing that it only opened at 18.30hs. I met the hostess downstairs (who was very nice at this stage) and she confirmed that the place would open in 20 minutes. I came back at 18.30hs on the clock and found other patrons already inside?... I was greeted by the same hostess I met earlier and although there were several available tables I was shown a table right next to a couple... I'm not sure about personal space here but I certainly didn't feel comfortable sitting next to them on a near empty restaurant and asked to sit somewhere else. This is when the hostess attitude changed. She wasn't rude but it was clear that she disapproved of my request, shown by her body gesture. Anyway, I won't write much about their service because it's definitely lacking. Not courteous, not attentive and definitely not kind. Good thing the pizza was ready in a few minutes! The pizza itself was a disappointment this time around. I'm not sure if the oven has changed but the crust wasn't crunchy as you'd expect on pizza prepared on a wood fire oven. The calabrese was chewy and impossible to cut with the knife. On top of that, the pizza is small and not enough for those with big appetite! I asked for an espresso for dessert and to my surprise it was the one I liked the least so far here in Lausanne. Needless to say I was disappointed with this visit, a huge contrast to my previous a couple of years ago. Let's hope this was simply a one off and that the next try will bring things to the good side again.

One had spinach and an egg and the other had basil leaves and olive oil. 2 glasses of wine, 2 pizzas and 2 scoops gelato was about $80. That is a lot for an American tourist, but may not be surprising to a Swiss person.

Restaurant Chez Mario - The place looks dodgy from the outside and that doesn't really change inside... But it's all for show & tell.
