We have been taken advantage of many times in the past, so we were already tense about the entire thing. We found RJ Howard Electric and gave them a call. They open very early in the morning (7:30am) which is nice for stressed out folks like us! We spoke with Rick and explained the situation. He was able to schedule an appointment for 4:00pm later that day. Rick showed up right on time, 4 o'clock on the DOT, and called my hubby for more information on what what happening in mom's home. He went downstairs and checked her circuit breaker and after less than five minutes of investigating he already knew the issue. It was the line outside on the pole, which is an AEP problem. Not only did he call AEP for my mother and arrange for them to fix the outage, but he provided us with the ticket number so we could track the progress. On top of all the good news, he also only charged us a minimal fee for his services. We were so relieved and appreciative and cannot say enough good things about this company. We have some electrical issues at our house that we have been putting off over fear of getting taken advantage of, but it's comforting to know we have a reliable, honest electrician to call now! We are under a massive time constraint as we had to clean the house, fix any issues, and hand out keys to the new tenants in a very short period of time. I Yelped electrical companies and 3 companies responded. Two of the companies could not get a technician out in time and this company did not respond at all to their robot response on Yelp to schedule an appointment. After a day, I got their number off of the internet and physically called them asking if they were available. They said they were available, they asked my name and when I gave them my name, they said, " oh, you are from Yelp?" So, they got my inquiry and didn't call me back, 1st red flag. They sent out two technicians that seemed pretty young. I talked with one guy and he said he was 23 yrs. old. Not a big deal as you can learn a lot in those years, but Dean entrusted me with two young guys to solve my problem. The issue was if you wiggled the electrical panel in the basement, the lights would come on and off and mostly stay off. To me, that means something is loose and needs to be tightened or there is a short somewhere, etc. Well, these guys hung around, fiddled here and there, and stuff would go on, then go off, then on again. Stuff would work, then it seemed like they were done, then it wouldn't work, etc. Finally after about an hour, the lead guy comes to me and didn't give me any explanation as to what the issue was. He told me my main wire was old and cracked, said I had moisture in the box (No moisture was present in his pics), said my panel was a mess and recommended a $4000 panel redo or reorganization or whatever the heck he tried to sell me. I was not prepared to spend $4k and said to email me the quote and I would speak to my wife about the work and get back to them. They started putting together the bill for the call and I told them to bill me 2 hours. The bill came out to a little over $300. This was in the afternoon on Friday. Before leaving they kept saying this was challenging and it had them stumped, but they figured it out. I asked what the issue was and they told me it was a circuit breaker was bad and they changed it out. Okay, great issue solved. Well, I had to replace a broken lock on a door next to the panel and when I closed the door, all the lights went out again! This was only a couple of hours later. I texted the technician the lights were out again... no response. I texted the main number they were communicating with me... no response... I called the number of the tech... no response, left message. I called the main number... no response, left message. I'm starting to think these guys are a scam. The next day I called the technician because I am under extreme pressure and time constraints to get this fixed. I told the tech that if I did not get a call back within the next 30 minutes, I would be forced to dispute the charges and give a bad review. Well, the response I received was a text from a manager stating that because I threatened to give a bad review and dispute the charges, that they would not refund my money or come out at fix the issue! They called me a liar that they never quoted me $4k for the box redo, which i had to screen shot the quote and text the manager, they say said the tech said it was a dangerous box with moisture and needed to be changed, but that was not communicated with me at the first meeting. That was a lie. They said they changed a circuit breaker, that was a lie. I asked the manager to send me photos of the location of the new circuit breaker and the moisture in the panel... they never sent the photos. I have continued to ask for photos and they won't send them... pretty telling. All they are interested in is selling you an unnecessary panel box rewire job. Well, I called another company, they came out, couldn't identify any new circuit breakers, and determined the box had wiggled loose over the years and promptly fixed the issue. I would have respected this company more if they would have been straight forward and said they couldn't fix the issue, or if the only fix was to spend the money on the big fix, etc. but at no time did they tell me the box was loose... Again, they prey on you knowing you need the issue to be fixed and charge you exorbitant amounts of money when not needed. They are the same as air conditioning companies and it stinks. I reached out because our hot water heater was not working after the breaker tripped multiple…read moretimes. The technician arrived, and my husband showed him our laundry room with our water heater and electric panel and explained what was happening and concern about a sizzle sound after the breaker tripped most recently. The technician did not inspect the water heater, only glancing over and saying it "looks new." He went over to the electric panel and began confirming our fears that what my husband described was a safety concern. He went outside for approximately 5 minutes to look at our outside electric box. He suggested we get it fixed because it's not flush against the house but focused on claims that it would be best to replace our electric panel because it is worn out and a fire hazard. He claimed the reason it was a fire hazard was due to breakers that had been replaced. He repeatedly expressed concerns for our safety and continued to look over at the breakers and claimed he could tell they would fail soon. In under 30 minutes he gave my husband an estimate with options for replacing the main panel for approximately $5,000 or approximately $7,000 to replace the entire electrical panel. My husband and I talked and agreed since the technician was so adamant our existing panel was a fire hazard and claimed we are in danger, we agreed to the full panel replacement. I was handed a tablet to complete a financing application. Nothing about the financing was explained and I had no idea if it's a loan or line of credit. I do know I would be paying for 7 years at 13% interest. While I was completing the financing process, the technician was extremely talkative and joked with my husband about sports. He scheduled an appointment for the following week. He again claimed our existing panel was a fire hazard and that he was glad he was going to help keep us safe by replacing it. After he left, I had a bad feeling. He never said anything about the water heater, which was the whole reason for the visit. Combined with the short inspection, never explaining what made him decide the breaker box was dangerous, the high cost estimate, the invoice that doesn't include a breakdown of material vs labor, or any description of the work to be done, and the incessant overly friendly talking. It began to hit me how many hard sell tactics were used during the short visit. I decided to talk to a family member who said I should get a second opinion and that there's no way any of what the technician said was true. He suggested an electrician who came out the next morning. The electrician quickly found the real issue, which was a loose screw! He told us that nothing was wrong with our electrical panel and that he turned his screw driver 5 times before he could hear the hot water heater come back on. He did not charge us for the visit. He also informed us that Safe Electric and Plumbing has a reputation for unnecessary overly expensive work. I called to cancel with Safe and received unclear answers from their both their AI and weekend answering service about the status of the loan through their lender. I was eventually told to call the finance department next week. I also went back and looked more closely at their reviews and was horrified to see how many of both the positive and negative reviews described similar experiences. This includes many of the positive reviews reporting "electric panel replacement or upgrade" after hiring this company for unrelated work and the negative reviews who also experienced hard sell scare tactics. I'm feeling upset and manipulated. We came so close to paying over $7,000 plus 13% interest for 7 years for a loose screw. After several calls, I did at least get confirmation that the loan would not move forward without any work being done. I cannot adequately put into words how sickened I am by the realization that this business we trusted to come into our home engages in tactics to take advantage of unsuspecting customers. Please beware.
