I purchased a 1884 ebony Model A Steinway Grand piano in Oct 2022 for $13,500 from the owner, Dennis of DC Pianos in Berkely. My complaint is about the warranty and the lack of response and concern from the owner, Dennis to honor the terms of the warranty. This piano came with a 5yr warranty. I have in writing in a text by the owner that the warranty covers parts that are broken, need repair or replacement including parts and labor. The warranty does not include tuning or maintenance. Since I've had the piano I've put in 2 claims for reimbursement prepared by my previous piano tuner. One claim on 2/9/23 for $400 to lubricate whippens, and Jack repairs on C1 &C2. Second claim on 5/9/23 for $60 to lubercate Jack G6 and adjust C5. A total of $460 in the last 3 years. In December 2024 I finally had new hammers, hammerhanks, whippens, a complete action regulation, and a tone regulation of new hammers done to the piano. Why? Because those parts I mentioned were never replaced. They were the originals. It's a known fact that old worn parts as the ones I mentioned can be a significant loss of musical potential and the Pianos ability be a pleasure to play. My piano sounded in correct and the consequences were significant Here are examples: 1) Their was a loss of tone. The piano had a muffled and very harsh sound. The piano was not producing rich and clear tones. 2) The piano was very difficult to play. The worn actions made it difficult to control the Pianos touch response.The keys were constantly sticking, the notes were difficult to repeat, and piano sounded dead. 3) The last two years and 8 months I've had this piano I've noticed the pianos sound and structure deteriorating. An example : tinny, buzzing, and rattling sounds, keys do not return properly, and cracks in the sound board are most likely than not to be caused from worn parts. I complained in texts sent to the owner and his son the problems I was having with the piano. I was spending a significant amount of time, energy and money paying piano tuners including the owners son to tune my piano with no lasting effect. The old parts that I finally had replaced were the culprit bc now that I had this work done my piano sounds alive, beautiful, and the rich clear sound is magical. I had the work done by a professional piano specialist bc the owner of DC piano and son were unresponsive to my requests to have my piano fixed. I paid $7,800 to have new hammers, hammer shanks, and flanges, new whippens, complete action regulation, tone regulation of new hammers, fine tuning, and new key bushings. I spoke to the owner this afternoon to cover this under the warranty and he refused with a million excuses why not. I told both the son and father the issues I was experiencing with this piano and I was ignored. I believed from the first moment I played this piano at DC Pianos that it had potential and with a little TLC ithe piano would not be like new, but it would have a 2nd chance to shine and sound beautiful. My intention has always been to take care of this piano and with no help or support from DC Pianos I've achieved that. read more

One great reason to use DC Piano is their warranty. We bought a used Baldwin grand and had G2 string start to make noise after the first complimentary tuning. They came out a second time and retuned, validated the issue and ordered the strings ($180 or so). And a third visit to replace the strings. They will return to san mateo a fourth time to pull it up again and a fifth visit if required. i am amazed because the price of the instrument was in the same range as buying off of craig's list. It was really nice to buy my first piano (grand) at the D.C. Piano Company. I had shopped around for several months and went to several dealers, as well as Craiglist. DC is definitely one of the best. The store has a large inventory and wide range of pianos to satisfy different needs. DC let you try out the pianos on your own for as long as you like and never interrupts. No pushing sales at all. As it says on its website, "the piano speaks for itself", which is very true there. They also have craftsmen in store for piano repair and restore, so they managed to keep price very competitive, and keep the condition of the pianos in a very good shape. I was in the market for a digital piano and went to try the Kawai line at DC Piano. I appreciated that the people there were friendly and gave honest and objective answers to questions, but also leave you to try pianos in peace without breathing down your neck or pressuring you to buy. I checked out other options for buying the one I wanted (online, other stores, etc.) but DC actually had the best price, AND free local delivery + assembly. I went on a weekend and they sent people to deliver and assemble just a few days later. All-around recommended. For digital pianos and keyboards I mainly saw Kawai and Roland, from low to mid-higher end. There were also a lot of uprights and baby grands, both new and used. I was apprehensive about going to a piano store because the only one I had been to long ago was very upscale, and I was worried about all kinds of things like being judged about my playing or being sized up for whether I looked wealthy enough to be at a piano store (lol). Matt from DC Piano Company helped restring and restore my 1887 Mason & Hamlin grand piano. This was a monumental effort as it required custom-making several obsolete parts like the agraffes. The overall process took 1.5 years (they had several other projects queued before mine and it took a while to get the custom parts from manufacturers). I cannot emphasize how grateful I am for the time Matt invested in chasing down the custom parts and making sure they were of satisfactory quality. Shortly after delivery, Matt tuned the piano and also helped fix several minor issues on the spot (e.g. stuck key, shifted keyframe). 100% would recommend DC Piano Company. Never got around to reviewing the piano we got here two years ago, but two years later I am still so very in love with our vintage Yamaha piano. I used to stop in the shop to look around on my walks and as soon as we moved and was able to buy one I went straight back to this place. I had a hard time picking one out as there are so many beautiful old pianos. Our Yamaha is a very limited edition that was produced pre-WWII I think, but it is so beautifully restored, sounds great and looks amazing with a subtle matte black finish. Very happy with our visit to this store. They had a very large selection of pianos to try. The staff was helpful, but also let us wander and play whatever we wanted to play. This was super helpful as we came in with an idea of what we wanted, but then decided to explore and walked out with something completely different. My husband hasn't played professionally since his days at Cambridge, but since he has to play at my sister's wedding in a couple months, we decided to purchase a transportable, high-quality electric piano. I liked DC Pianos Co. because they didn't push us to purchase anything and did not make us feel uncomfortable for testing out each piano. They understand that buying a piano is a big decision and it's not cheap. Spring of 2018, I decided was a good time to have my Boardman-Gray (1878, documented) upright grand piano serviced, but I was unsure where and to what extent. After extensive research, I chose DC Piano and it was the very best decision for this deserving piano. Matt came to the condo, took pictures and gave an initial assessment. Over several visits, emails and phone calls, and with his input, we decided to give the piano the full spa treatment: rebuilt entirely on the inside, cabinet stripped down and refinished, including the stool, AND including delivery to home in the Delta. Since the condo would now be without a piano, I bought a fabulous Kawai digital at an even more fabulous price, including bench, etc. The operation took somewhat longer with the Boardman-Gray, but that is to be expected. I was trying to decide whether to buy a digital keyboard or a less expensive upright piano. I found this establishment and visited them several times to try their instruments, as my ear kept improving and I kept upping my budget on what I was willing to pay. A piano is not an impulse buy. Knowing I was in shopping mode, I made it clear to the younger salesperson there that I didn't want to take up his time while I was trying to decide, and just pay no attention to me while I tried different units. He seemed fine with this. One day I went in, and the older gentleman, whom I assumed was the owner (and had not seen before), pretty much glared at me when I walked in. I smiled and nodded, and went and tested some more pianos. Pretty soon he was sort of shadowing me, and scowling all the while. I'm pretty sure I would not be able to shoplift a piano, and I certainly was not being rough with their merchandise. I almost asked him if something was wrong. Wow! What can I say about DC Piano that describes how excellent a business this place is? I happened to stumble upon it and am so happy I did. I had been looking to purchase a piano for a very long time and had made the decision to make a purchase soon. After checking craigslist and a couple other piano stores, I decided to drive out to check DC Piano out after reading the reviews here. Let's just say I walked in thinking I was going to do some comparisons and checking but I walked out a piano owner! My first exposure to DC Piano was an e-mail inquiry about some pianos I had my eye on to see and hear. I received a prompt reply from Dennis. That was a good sign. As soon as I walked into the store, I was greeted by two young men. Erik and Matteo (I think). After assessing my needs, Erik took me around showing me various pianos and played each one for me so I could hear the subtle variations in sound. We talked about all the questions I had and I had him play several pianos again for me. His knowledge about each piano is excellent and he was able to help me focus on an instrument that would provide what I was looking for. I decided on a piano that had the sound I preferred only to find out it was above my budget. After a couple of minutes of talking, Erik told me he could sell me the piano I wanted and would bring the price down so it would be within my budget. Add to that the fact that he adjusted the price to include tax so it came within my budget too! Not only did I end up with a fantastic piano, I also received a new piano bench (my choice of two styles), delivery of the piano, and tuning before it left the shop as well as after it arrives at my house. Those three things right there saved me hundreds more. I also was given several sheets of music for free. Fast forward to delivery: amazing! I received a call from Erik letting me know the piano would be arriving around a certain time. Indeed it did! A few minutes after the time, I saw the truck outside my house. The driver (whose name I didn't get) came and looked at where the piano was to go and within fifteen minutes, he had the truck positioned, the piano out and up the stairs and in place. Both of the fellows were so professional. They got the job done flawlessly, polished any smudges off the piano, checked all the keys, made sure the bench was fine, removed all debris and didn't leave me one thing to vacuum up. I should add this happened on a rainy day. So, this review may be long but I wanted to let you readers know what a great business this is. It's a shame more businesses do not operate like DC Piano. What can I say that hasn't been said? I wanted a piano. They had a good one. They delivered it on time. The first thing Sam played when demo-ing the piano was "you've got a friend in me". Apparently, that is the store motto. So, it appears to be true: DC Piano is a pleasant, low-risk way to buy a piano. I bought a used YAMAHA in D C Piano Company. I could try every piano freely in their store and take as long as I want. They were friendly, helpful and offered me a good used YAMAHA in reasonable price. At last they even gave me several music sheets as present. For moving, they arrived on time and didn't complain at all even though my home has two narrow stairs to go up and also a sharp and narrow corner to turn. I think they have tried their best, but after moving, there is a small but obvious scratch on the piano. The tuner Brian came today(after two weeks when I bought the piano), it is such a pity that I haven't tried the piano before he left. After he finished tuning and left, I tried a piece of music but there is still noise in the bass. I think I need to find another tuner in the near future. read more

We purchased a used grand piano from DC Piano. Long story short, I am very glad I made the 40 minute-drive and looked and tried the pianos in person. The store may feel very relaxing and the experience with the sales may be various depending on who you really talked with, but I have a feeling they all have more or less passionate about music, or music instruments. That motivation makes difference. Personally I enjoy reading the About Us section on their website about their history. Throughout the process to place order, I feel the price is fair and most importantly they are quite honest and straight-forward to communicate, besides, they have the complete shop so you can see what they are normally doing. I always saw their old pianos sitting outside and didn't think they would be a good place to buy a new piano, but I was completely wrong. Finally made it to DC Piano!!!! Ever been driving around and you see a storefront that catches your eye but because you were headed somewhere else you couldn't stop by? That's me when it comes to DC Piano. I always see it when I am driving by on my way somewhere in Berkeley and only now because I was walking around getting my car have an oil change that I actually made it to DC Piano. Anyhow, this is PIANO HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The customer service here is above par!!! No pushy sales ppl, no evil eye for tinkering on their pianos or that stare that you know follows your back as you look around the store....NONE of that! Exceptional don't you think?? So, there are 2 used on sale pianos on the sidewalk that I tinkered with. Then inside- lots and lots of brand spanking new pianos, grand pianos, upright pianos, a few keyboards...some of which I again tinkered with. Friendly staff who answered my quesions. He thought I was interested in a piano and I said NOOOOO not this time, but a fullsize keyboard definitely. They had two on board another one on it's way. Unfortunatley they don't sell used keyboards because I wanted to get rid of my not fullsized keyboard and get a 88 key one. However, the sales person recommended that I sell it on amazon, ebay, etc. How helpful is that? He also suggests since they didn't have many keyboards to check out Best Buy and Costco??? Perhaps,.... Addiitionallly- this place has also other instruments but not as many as the pianos, some guitars, a few brass instruments, bongo drums and a large selection of music books, and rare sheet music...wow! I could spend hours here! As I was leaving I also noticed in the back pianos that were being resotored, pianos that were being brought from movers- so this place is also a restoration site, I only which I can fly my parents piano over here and get the some of the keys unstuck. So 5+ star for quality and affordable pianos (mainly Yamaha and Steinbeck, bus others too), customer service, music books, and other instruments. D C Pianos sells new and used pianos. They fix pianos. They are family owned and operated. They have a range of pianos from free junkers through that grand piano you can't afford. Their selection tends toward slightly expensive, but I mean, these are pianos after all. They have cheap sheet music and are among the few bay area music establishments that seems in the business of providing actual (poor) musicians with actual instruments. We were looking for a family piano for a long while, both used and new. My wife and I play, but we have 2 young kids, so we wanted something nice but durable. After several months of looking about, I think we finally hit the saturation of analysis paralysis... we couldn't make up our minds on exactly what we wanted, and how much we were willing to pay by simply looking at Craig's listings online. A couple of weekends ago, we decided to check out DC Pianos in Berkeley, based on their very good Yelp reviews. I'm pleased to report we had a very similar (i.e. excellent) experience as everyone reports. We told the staff what we were looking for, how much we could approximately spend, and he proceeded to give us all the best options he had, including a great price on a new piano. Plus - they give 100% trade-in credit down the road, so we could get the piano best for us today, but as the kids grow up and our requirements change (I'm expecting at least one of them to be a concert-level pianist), we can always trade-up. Finally, as the parent of two young kids (1.5 and 4), they were extremely patient with the running / playing / singing while we were trying to hold down a real conversation. They even gave my 4yr old son a little toy ukulele that day, since he was so excited to be getting a piano, and kids aren't good with 3-day delivery, even though we thought it was excellent. The action was all new. Dennis came out personally and no damage was done to either the piano or my home during transport. Had a really great experience here buying my first piano! I got a great price on a new Kawai K3, and they have an upgrade program so when I can finally afford a house and grand, I know I'll be coming back and in good hands. I didn't know too much about pianos and went in there expecting to buy a used Yamaha U1. I wasn't rushed at all in and allowed to play on them as long as I wanted. He didn't mind that I play on pianos I clearly couldn't afford either which as a real treat. They have a good selection of Kawais, but I kind of wish they sold new Yamahas as well. Still, they have lots of pianos for you to choose from, especially used, and I would strongly recommend going there.
