Call me biased (because I rent office space from them) but I think that Nail's Convenience Store is…read morethe best in Lake Martin. The title of this business is Nail's Mini Storage, that's because they also rent out climate controlled and non-climate controlled storage at the same spot. They also rent commercial office space, where I have my office. The convenience store is one of the newest in the area, so it is clean, well lit, and bright. David does a great job of keeping the parking lot and surrounding area looking very nice. His gas prices are good, and the selection inside is very good for a C store. It's really like a mini grocery store. Plus (being near Lake Martin) it's nice that they have some boating and fishing supplies. He also has his own ice maker, so he never runs out, which is a feat on busy summer days like the 4th of July. Their coffee is consistently good, and service is always friendly. You won't regret visiting Nail's.

But it isn't...it is an oasis in the middle of nowhere, so it's an easy four. You'll probably find what you need here, if your needs aren't complicated or obscure. During our week at a cabin at Lake Martin, I made runs to D&S to get butter, eggs, milk, beer, salsa, aloe (for sunburned kids), and quite a few other items. Surprisingly good beer selection, with several local (Alabama) craft breweries represented. There's a hot deli that offers burgers, wings, and pizza. As I said, convenient options are non-existent, so it gets busy during lunch and dinner. Gas pump island is startlingly close to the front door, so have some situational awareness, lest you get run over or run over someone.

Right out of the gate let's make one thing very clear...you've heard of a dive when referencing a bar or restaurant, well this is the convenience store equivalent of that. More stuff than what you'll find at a normal convenience store, but nothing like what you'll find at like a Walmart or places like that. They do have some staples, I'm guessing because they are in the middle of nowhere and then a few miles beyond ... so they make it so the folks that are in the area don't have to drive forever (plus a little more) to get to a n actual grocery store. Now, where they excel is in oddities. The one that stood out to me - Peach Mango Angry Orchard .... until seeing it here, didn't even know it existed. Just one example of the different stuff you'll find here. Oh, did I say they also have a full service food area - kind of like a publix - fried chicken and all the fixin's. When compared to this one as well, they were much smaller. The only reason I came here with a friend was because there is really nothing else nearby our hotels that we could grab a few snacks/drinks. I will say it was quite the walk from the hotels, but well worth it. The lot as a whole was big and well lit. I liked the more modern design they had going and it was a welcoming establishment. We went inside and it was larger than I expected and I was able to go through the aisles with ease to find items that I not necessarily needed, but wanted in that moment. After making our selections we went towards the registers to check out. Yikes, this was the confusing part. They had a generalized line, but you had no idea who was in line because where the line began was where you could grab your a quick drink, add to your coffee, and an area where people just mingle. The line went slowly. Not because it was filled with people, but because they decided to go with new technology and I don't think people understood that just yet. Registers where you place all your items in and area and it does it's thing and calculates what you owe. Not everyone was getting it, and unfortunately I didn't get a chance to play with them. When I neared the register the employee behind the counter called me over to the register. She was a sweetheart and working her butt off. She was trying to get the line down so that she could use the restroom. I felt like I needed to get out of there faster. I hope that she was just getting a burst of customers so that she could use the facilities.

Stay far away! The dirtiest, most wretched bathrooms I've ever seen. I saw the "employees last…read morecleaned" chart, and it hasn't been cleaned for 3 days....and it showed. No toilet paper, no paper towels, and a disgusting mess everywhere. Plenty of employees were milling around in the store, not one could be bothered to address the bathroom situation.

So, today I came to the Stillwaters area from out of town to help my aged father through knee…read morereplacement surgery. At 8pm, I became hungry for supper. I didn't want to drive Hwy 49 ALL the way back to Hwy 280, and when I saw the neon OPEN sign in the window at Store 34. I pulled in - I knew they had pizza, and I was happy to support a local business. I parked, walked to the door, and tried to open it - but it was locked. "That sucks," I thought, "I guess she forgot to turn off the sign." I returned to my car. 2 doors down, I saw a woman exit the Lake Martin Pizza Co. holding a cardboard box. "Terrific! I can support another local business," I thought. I looked at the door and saw that on Wednesdays they're open until 9pm - great! Since it was only 8:22 pm, I wasn't coming in at the last minute! I walked in and was told by the smiling young lady at the counter "We closed at 8:00 - sorry!" On my way out, I looked at the hours on the door - yep - open till 9:00. So, I drove all the way out Hwy 49 to 280 and crossed it to the Subway at 17957 Highway 280 Ste C. I walked in, and I was greeted warmly by the person working the counter. He custom-made my sandwich, I paid a fair price, and I drove all the way back to Stillwaters. When I passed Store 34 and Lake Martin Pizza company, they both looked visibly closed from Hwy 49. It was 8:41 pm. So - among these three establishments, I recommend the Subway. They do what they promise. I like to support local businesses - but I also like a good meal after a long day.
