"Wait, so what's the difference between lahmacun and gözleme?" my boyfriend asks me as we navigate…read morethe slushy sidewalks of Perleberger Straße. "Lahmacun is Turkish pizza, gözleme is like a Turkish quesadilla." "And we're going to a place called Güllü Lahmacun to eat...gözleme?" "Yes," I said, doubting whether this was indeed going to be the right restaurant. The first time I lived in Berlin, a friend of mine took me to this little restaurant tucked away on a random street corner whose name I could not for the life of me remember -- all I knew was that only women worked behind the counter, somewhat strange for this area. Thanks to some Internet sleuthing, I found out the name of the place and decided to go back for old times' sake. In the years since I was last there, not much has changed. We were warmly greeted by a woman tending to the large, decorative electric grill that sits in the front window and waited our turn to order. We ordered a cheese-and-spinach gözleme for €2.50 and took a stand in the corner to wait for her to prepare our food. The only one working, she ripped a chunk of dough from a pile sitting on a counter in a large plastic bag and put it through an automatic roller to get it to the perfect thinness. "Scharf?" she asked me, the only other woman in the restaurant, with a smile. Of course. Slowly but deliberately, she laid out the fillings, folded the dough over and set it on the grill, brushing it with some fat to give it that perfect gleam. After waiting 15 minutes -- nothing moves quickly here -- she sliced the gözleme up into squares and piled it on a to-go plate for us to take with us on our way to a beer festival a few U-Bahn stations away. The best gözleme I've ever had? Not really, and the price is a bit steep -- I've had better, bigger portions for less than €2. But for a relaxed atmosphere and kind service, it's a sure bet. And for that, we certainly plan on heading back next time we're in the neighborhood.

The much debated "best döner in berlin" google search gives multitude of answers. Tadim is one of the best places to try kebab in Berlin. We visited the joint for lunch and were not disappointed. The restaurant is pretty basic, nothing to write home about. But the ingredients they use are fresh and delicious. They even make their own bread and the meat they use, so that is a huge plus. The balance of spices and flavors is good to my taste. You do pay a bit of premium for the döner compared to other restaurants, but its still cheap. You can get also iskender and kebab plates if you are not into döner. They also have veggie options, but we did not taste these. While at the place, you can also visit other ethnic stores in the area.

Sitting outside would've been our preference except it started raining. The counter service is okay. Not unfriendly, but certainly not especially helpful. The prices seemed reasonable. Overall, worth a try if you are in the area, but maybe not worth going out of your way to visit if there are similar type places closer to where you are.

Clean kitchen…read more Con: I can't get this grade of home cooking in Southern California Went to this local gem after researching for the best doner in Berlin. The most common advice online was to look for a place that doesn't hide the flaw of the meat with sauce, keep the bread thin, and no salad... so just bread and meat. This place came highly recommended, even Uber drive was surprised that we selected Tekbir as the destination, as this is a local feeding spot and not the usual tourist beat. You know a place is a treasure when the locals are praising it for authenticity. We got to the place when it just opened, the chef took our order and have us sit outside. number 12 - chicken wrap - this chicken was just crazy, 20 more seconds it's raw, 20 more seconds and it's dry, I don't know how that genius know the temp control that well, but bravo. Seasoning was worth crying over. number 2 - traditional doner - glorious, no sauce to cheapen the perfectly created meat mix, the thin, yet almost crispy wrap was a majestic combo to the texture of protein and carb. number 29 - grilled cheese over salad - forget the usual cheese served in breakfast buffets, this lightly grilled cheese is like eating grilled tofu but with a semi- hard inside, this doesn't ooze out but not hard enough to have to bite down. Impressive. number 26 - beef stew - chopped beef and I think some chopped organ (heavy flavor) for this splendid starter. Skip the tourist joint, come to little Istanbul.
