Small and busy airport, but overall I had a really pleasant experience here. As soon as we got off the plane, we were welcomed with complimentary rum shots . The airport is fairly small, so there's only one souvenir shop on the departure side, but there were still several food options available for a quick meal or snack. I tried the Johnny cake sandwich from Hibiscus Cafe it personally wasn't my favorite, but it wouldn't stop me from returning. Overall, the airport felt efficient, welcoming, and easy to navigate. Very old, very out dated, very small and very disappointing! Arriving- every thing is outside and uncovered, Boarding and Deplaning is done by STEPS! Someone may or may not help you down. More then likely a fellow passenger will help you before anyone from the airport/airline. Too many different airlines fly into STT and this just make it more congested and chaotic. The airport is too small to accommodate any airline or third party travel clubs, so everyone get the same crappy service! Very limited food choices and the Hibiscus Cafe stinks up the entire waiting area. During peek season it could take you two or three hours to get through security. Again very antiquated and triple redundancy. IF you have Global Entry you can jump the Customs line but that is it. They have TSA precheck but No Clear and now that more and more people are e getting TSA Precheck it not much faster "at this airport ". I've been flying for over 30years and TSA and Global Entry for 10 and this is the worst experience I've had so far. I get that the agents have a job to do and I very much appreciate them keeping American Safe, but being rude and disrespectful is completely unacceptable! To be honest this airport will keep me from returning to this island, was just not totally amazed with a lot of things. Is it a beautiful place, in spots yes, but to deal with this airport for me it is not worth returning and I myself don't recommend, we only came here because it have the cheapest airfare, so shame on me for not doing more research. If you do get a rental, get a Jeep! You will need it!!! Get all the insurance you can, you will need it!!!! Driving on the island is different then anything I've ever experienced and not just because the drive on the Left side, it's just a free for all nobody cares and our New Jeep looked like it was 5 years old and had damage on all four corners. Take Pictures and Videos of EVERYTHING before you start it up!!! I love Hilton and the Hampton Inn, but the only one on the island is at the harbor where all the Huge cruise ships dock, Daily! We were so happy to reach this little tiny airport on the western end of St Thomas! We experienced no problems with the airport, and they were very welcoming to passengers disembarking the air craft. STT airport Sat. 2/28/2026 was an absolute disaster; thousands of people standing in extremely long lines snaking from deep inside and outside the terminal; it took 3-hours to get checked-in with my airline, through customs/immigration and finally TSA. The temperature inside the terminal was warmer than it was outside, and severely overcrowded unsafe beyond its design and occupancy limits. By far one of the worst airports I have ever experienced -- and I've been to Cuba twice! Take the advice about arriving 3 hours early seriously, especially if you do not have Global Entry and a TSA Pre. Horrible security screen process with rude agents, crowded boarding area with poorly organized seating, and much need space taken over by ridiculously overpriced shops and cafes. It's a shame that any travelers last memory of USVI with be this crappie airport. read more

I'm sorry, but you can't "lock" people in a seemingly un-airconditioned waiting room, where they can't bring their own liquids in, and NOT provide a water fountain. Instead you have to spend $6 on a bottle of water or test your luck at the bathroom sink. This seems inhumane and I've never seen this before in my 32 years of flying all over the world. Never have I found an airport that doesn't have a water fountain. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for this place and the greed of making you buy overpriced water instead of filling up your own water bottle like you can everywhere else. Got through checking a bag and to a seated spot inside security in under 25 minutes on a Monday afternoon. read more

Super cute airport. You will be greated by the friendly staff and free samples of their legendary drinks upon walking into their airport from arrivals. Definitely been up and running for awhile, but it is efficient nonetheless. The staff was very friendly, and helpful. The airport could definitely use a revamp, and I hope it gets one in time because the employee definitely deserves better than the equipment they've been dealt with. I've had better experiences in 3rd world airports. By FAR the worst airport infrastructure of any US territory, or of any other 'major' Caribbean island. Arrival experience is OK. Long rental car booth line unless you picked the right company that day. Depature experience is horrendous. Way beyond capacity - no room to sit in the hot filthy terminal with minimal to no AC and nothing but a few busted fans. The stairs to the plane are expected and not an issue - its the Caribbean... but everything else is horrible in the terminal waiting area. read more

St Thomas Airport- Global entry is a MUST when you're going back to the states. Ideally don't check any bags because you'll be waiting forever. TSA staff are very friendly. Gated area is 1/5 for cleanliness, bathrooms missing TP, no active cleaning staff, not totally surprising... With our rental car drop off, with global entry, carry ons only, we made it through in 35 mins passing a ton of people. Bring your global entry ID!!!! They'll check it to put you in the short lines. I didn't have mine, but my husband did have the global ID and our passports- that was enough for them. Plenty of places to get food inside, just grab seats before the place gets packed. ((4 stars for the staff and the quick TSA)) They do say to arrive 3 hours early so do what you please with the above info. Oh, and if you're checking a bag, it might get totally soaked if it's raining while your luggage is being toted around. Everything at this airport is outside minus TSA and the gate area. We are departing on a Monday and the inside area is completely packed within an hour of us getting to the gate. Arriving to St. Thomas airport isn't too bad, you get off directly on the tarmac, stairs only, so be aware of that as well. Walk around the side of the building to the baggage claim before you leave, get your bags, a car, or a taxi. Plenty of taxis are waiting but the price for 1 way to your hotel is the same as a 3 day car rental. If you're cool with driving on the opposite side of the winding, unmarked roads- get a rental. Just be careful. Rental cars are always overbooked, we had to wait 45 mins for our car. Some people were waiting 1-2 hours or were told to come back the next day. read more

It seems that this airport has done some upgrades recently. It's a small airport, which makes sense because it's a small island. We had to wait a while for Delta staff to begin checking bags in. Once they give you a tag for your bag you have to walk it over to a different section for them to scan the bags. There are a few souvenir shops and places to eat. However I recommend brining your own food because the prices here are astronomical! $50+ for two burgers and fries. Total rip off. read more

Worst Airport. Arrived 4 1/2 hours before flight. Waited in line over 2 1/2 hours in HOT 84 degree temperature. Saw that a service call Red Shirts were able to take people to the front of the line and cut in front of everyone, which just kept adding and adding to our wait. Once inside the airport, more long lines for the bathroom (not clean) and food, no place to sit to eat. The airport was OVER CAPACITY, NO AC, sooo hot and uncomfortable , people sitting on the floor because not enough chairs. A totally miserable experience. Nice little airport! I loved the free shot of Cruzan rum as we entered the airport. The best part of the airport hehe It's a very small airport, but they have exactly what you need if you need it. The first thing I did was grab a local craft beer before we attempted to get a rental car which didn't happen because too many tourists on a small island. Supply and demand is high here. The rental car service here is a mess, but it was a lesson learned for our next trip here. Pro Tip: Book before you get here Also, the taxis here are very expensive and charge per person and per bag so be prepared to pay a lot for a short drive. Another lesson learned. For the amount of people that travels in and out of this airport, it is considerably tiny. At arrival, it's difficult to ascertain the size as you don't actually get to go in the airport aside from when you're getting your luggage where everything is chaotic with minimal space but it is open to the outside which makes it feel less crowded. No jet bridge so you do have to disembark via a set of stairs. It's a process especially for going into the plane but they do have 2 going at the same time for departing flights which makes it a little less time consuming. The airport itself is bustling with activities. Upon arrival, there are people playing live music and dancing to greet visitors and welcome them to the island. Great concept but with the confusion and size of the airport, it can add to the chaos as well. We waited for a bit to get our luggage. There was a flight that arrived slightly earlier than ours did which was using the same baggage carousel for our flight so we had to wait a bit until we saw our luggage come out. No clear signage for car rental companies that aren't on-site or where to wait for them but fortunately, people are holding signs out and direction visitors to the offsite car rental vans. On our return, we read and were told that you had to be 3 hours early due to the lines. Yes, can confirm this to be true. There are hundreds of people in line to first go through the luggage check in ordeal, then you go into the line to scan your bags for agriculture things, then you stand in yet another line for customs (yes, everyone has to go through this line), then another line to drop off your checked luggage and finally, another long line for the TSA and the line to the gates/xray scans. After you deal with the lines, you will be greeted with very little room to move in the gates area as streams of people slowly make their way to finding any available seats. We didn't find any so we went to a bar (figured no kids there because they didn't serve food), found a couple of seats to squeeze into (and I mean this in a very literal way), and ordered drinks to basically buy us a place to hang before our flight starts boarding. Of course, after a while, even people with children started bringing them into the place due to the lack of space. While the island was beautiful and our time spent there was fantastic in every possible way, the airport situation is only a hop and a skip away from being a scary nightmare. I hope someday they'll actually explore some options to better and expand the airport. read more

We flew back to the States yesterday and while this airport has always been a disaster it was worse then usual. It took hours to get through customs and the gate area is insufficient for the thousands of people in there. There's nowhere to sit, no air conditioning, and you end up standing for hours waiting to board your flight. We love St. Thomas but .....never again. read more

Not the worst but not the best! Expect chaos upon arrival and they really aren't kidding when they say arrive three hours prior to departure on busy days. You do get a free shot of rum upon arrival (great) but you also get heat, confusion, crowds, and a confusing taxi system. They will throw you into a taxi with other folks headed to many different places and charges in the VI are always per person. I did not check a bag so we were able to move pretty seamlessly through the arrivals process, which was good since we had a ferry to catch an hour later. We had to circle around the airport for 40 minutes upon arriving near the airport because there was a pothole on the runway. This is VERY common I guess so do not plan for easy, delay-less travel when heading into or out of this part of the Caribbean. There is a few "okay" cafe options and sitting and waiting the two hours for our flight to depart was fine. Have a great trip to the Caribbean but don't expect lovely service and any glamour here at Cyril King. read more

Terrible airport. Besides the chaos and ridiculously over-priced and under-seasoned food - an awful overall experience. if you have to spend more than an hour at this airport, you're screwed. MINIMAL seating, and when you try to sit in the eating areas for more than 10 minutes without eating, this extremely rude woman will come and tell you to leave - even though there's nowhere to sit in the main area. She will also tell you it's not her problem when you try to say there's nowhere to sit. I had a better experience at the Roatan, Honduras airport....which is saying a lot. read more

Then you get stuck with a few hundred sweating tourists waiting to get out of the oven onto their Air Conditioned planes. I know they are building a possible new terminal. This is by far the worst airport experience I've ever had! All the airport staff was super unfriendly from the TSA agents to the gate staff and I don't blame them! On arrival we got off the plane outside and walked inside where we got greeted. There was bathrooms, baggage claim, bar and car rental places. On the way back we were told to arrive 3 hrs early and thought TSA would take forever but maybe because it was a Tuesday we went through TSA without major issues. 09/25/23: Landed at this St. Thomas airport as St. John doesn't have an airport. Exit was outside. Wow that heat and humidity was a lot. Couldn't wait to get indoors. Not the largest of airport but very efficient and got the job done. Few food courts and a duty free shop as you waited for luggage. The normal car rental, tours etc. As my group and I were staying at Westin St. John Villa they had their own desk for checking in and shuttle and ferry arrangements to the resort. I saw a lot of negative reviews for this airport, and I kind of liked it. But you have to know what to expect, or you could get easily frustrated. For starters, they are on "Island Time." Nothing is very urgent. If you understand this and can calm your OCD brain, you'll be much happier. I'll start with the arrival information. You will be deplaning down some steps and onto the tarmac. I'm not sure how you get off if you're WC bound or can't do stairs, so this is something you'd want to look into if you are. They deplane through both the front and the back of the aircraft so this process is pretty quick. You may want to consider getting a seat on the back of the aircraft on the way there. The other thing is...it's hot. I don't mean a little warm, it is hot. So if you are coming from somewhere cold, dress for the heat. Or plan to change on your lay over or in the tiny airplane bathroom. I suggest taking off any layers before you land. Oh, and the area where you go for your luggage is not air conditioned. It is open to the elements and even hotter than outside. When you deplane, its already gorgeous. Already, you have a beautiful view. You walk in and are greeted by Caribbean dancers and wonderful music. I did not take pics because the locals believe pictures can steal their soul. Then you get a complimentary shot! take it! It's time to relax! There are only 3 luggage claim areas. So be patient. There is a bar right there. Stop and enjoy a drink before getting worried about your luggage! Once your luggage is there, you're good to go! Departing is a bit tricky. Being there 3 hours early is not a suggestion. It is a necessity. Some of the airlines do not get started until 11 or so. And then it's island time. You are standing outside waiting. If you have an early flight you're going to get through all of this much faster! You check your luggage and then YOU take your luggage through customs. Even though it is the US VI, you still go through customs, even if you're American. This is a lengthy process. Then you get into another line and drop off your luggage. If you pack like me, then be prepared to lift that heavy thing onto the conveyer. They don't help you. Then you go through TSA line. I have been told that it's cold in there but the air was not working. That place is crazy busy, and you may not find a seat. Don't worry about sitting by your gate, it won't likely happen. Just pay attention. The line to the bathrooms is really long too. Pull up a chair at the bar and start sipping on your drinks. Just keep in mind the long line to the bathroom. read more

This airport has the absolute worst customer service and the absolute worst process of trying to get you on the plane that I have ever seen in 50 years of travel. There is zero accountability and they demand that you arrive three hours early so you can stand in a huge line with hundreds and hundreds of other people spreading Covid willy-nilly. Entire system is a disaster. The people that work here moving slow motion every last one of them it's like the island disease they just don't care because what are we gonna do about it? Nothing. They basically ruined our entire vacation because the end was so shitty three hours of absolute disaster and then getting bumped off our flight because they were too lazy to get our bags to the plane when we got here two hours before our flight. This is a small airport with just a handful of gates. There were not enough seats as apparently I flew out at a busy time. Note that you have to go through customs as well as the regular TSA security so give yourself plenty of time when leaving. There is a gorgeous view out the windows. There is literally no information about this airport online. Yelp to the rescue! Our flight was delayed 6 hours AFTER we got here for the "required" 3 hour window prior to departure. Not blaming the airport for that. But what would have been really nice is if the airline communicated this information to airport employees as it was happening, and then if the airport employees communicated this information to passengers that ALL restaurants and shops (limited as it was) close at 5 PM, 5 hours until our new departure time. We found out accidentally as we wandered around about an hour after we got here and discovered we had 20 minutes to grab all of the food we would need for the next 5 hours. Props to the Hibiscus Cafe for staying open to serve us past their quitting time, but even then they stopped cooking food and basically only offered chicken tenders and fries. The kitchen staff all walked out as we were still standing in line. The manager worked with the cashier to get all of our airline food vouchers processed but the line took forever and our food was cold before we got out of line. There are not even any gate agents for any airlines here. We would have left and come back, but we had already bought a big bottle from duty free that we couldn't take through security. Departures Info. What they have here--there is a coffee stand that serves coffee and snacks but it closes at 4:30 PM so we missed that window once we saw them pull down the shades covering the shopS There is a duty free shop with a bar--it only has alcohol, but it also closes at 5 PM. There is a small gift shop/sundries shop but it also closes at 5 PM. And there is the Hibiscus Cafe which closes at 5 PM. That's it, folks. The waiting area for all gates is about the size of the end of one of Dulles' terminals (read: not that big for 8 gates). UPDATE: The manager of Hibiscus opened up one of their small stands so all of us passengers would not be completely stranded for hours! As some others have suggested. Bring your own food to the airport if possible, and for sure for a late flight after everything closes. Arrivals info. You de-plane outside so be prepared to go down a flight of steps to get off your plane. The only shop in the tiny baggage claim is a duty free shop selling alcohol. No sundries shop that we saw. Ground transportation. You can't miss the rental car company desks at baggage claim. Taxis can be found at the taxi stand outside and be prepared to share a passenger van with strangers. Expect to spend about $25 per person cash (plus tip) from the airport to your destination. read more

This review is for arrivals to St. Thomas, disembarking the plane, and navigating the airport. Most of the reviews here describe the departure process (which is generally rated pretty low). Enjoy your travels to the U.S. Virgin Islands! I've been traveling to St. Thomas for quite sometime now and the arrival process overall has generally been very efficient. As of April 2022, please have your mask on when disembarking plane. Remember that the USVI is a territory and has implemented rules that may be different from the states. You will walk down the stairs and primarily be outside, dress appropriately as you'll be outside in 80-85 degree weather. Prior to travel (at least 5-days out), the USVI Department of Tourism requires all travelers to the Territory to use the "USVI Travel Screening Portal" to submit the required COVID-19 vaccine or test results prior to traveling to the Territory. When you are cleared to travel to the USVI, you will receive an email with a green QR Code. You will need to print the QR Code ahead of time and carry it on you, or you will need to have it accessible on your phone for scanning after disembarking the plane. The military reservists will need your photo ID and the QC Code to scan. Head past the nice dancers greeting you towards the baggage claim, this is a great opportunity for you to get a free shot of Cruzan Rum (produced in St. Croix, VI). Once in the baggage claim area, you will receive your luggage relatively quickly compared to the larger airports in the U.S. There's only 2 baggage claim conveyor belts, I generally just head to the area and eventually your luggage will be there. For transportation: If you need car rental the options, then are Avis, Budget, and Hertz, but I try to support local family businesses by scheduling a rental ahead of time. There is also a taxi stand with clear taxi rates posted on a blue and red. I would recommend taking a picture of it. read more
